Yangju restaurant for warm charcoal dakgalbi: Seorak Makguksu
In short
Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi Yangju Branch is a Korean restaurant in Yangju, Gyeonggi, serving charcoal-grilled dakgalbi and makguksu. I tried two portions of dakgalbi, water makguksu, and spicy mixed makguksu, with staff grilling the meat and a clever grill setup keeping it warm. Yangju charcoal dakgalbi that overturns the dry-meat stereotype
I usually had the preconception that charcoal dakgalbi came in smaller portions than the griddle version and was a little dry. But at Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi Yangju Branch, I got to experience truly juicy, tender dakgalbi from a real Yangju favorite.

A large parking lot and a pleasant dining room
As soon as I arrived, the neat, generously sized exterior caught my eye. There was a very large parking lot in front of the restaurant, so it was incredibly easy to visit by car. No parking stress was such a plus!

Inside, the dining room was really spacious and pleasant. The tables were well spaced and there were plenty of seats, so it looked perfectly suited to group get-togethers or family meals. The whole place was also wonderfully clean and comfortable!

Ordering charcoal dakgalbi and using the self-service bar
After settling in and looking over the menu, we first ordered two portions of the signature charcoal dakgalbi. A self-service bar at one side of the restaurant let us help ourselves to small plates, fresh wrap vegetables, cabbage salad, and more without feeling self-conscious. I especially loved that the wrap vegetables included perilla leaves.

Once we had ordered, a simple table setting arrived along with hot charcoal.

Buckwheat pancake as an appetizer
Before the meat arrived, I tried a buckwheat pancake as a little appetizer. It was the textbook crisp-outside, moist-inside bite: crunchy on the outside and spicy and juicy within. It was great for waking up the appetite before the dakgalbi.

Charcoal dakgalbi grilled by the staff
Finally, the charcoal dakgalbi appeared! Plump pieces of chicken and rice cakes went straight onto the grill. Marinated meat can be tricky to cook, but the staff grilled it directly from start to finish so it would not burn and would taste delicious. It was so convenient!

They gathered the meat neatly to one side, and this is where the restaurant's amazing thoughtfulness came in!

A double grill that keeps the meat warm
They placed another grill underneath, then slightly tilted and overlapped the original dakgalbi grill. Thanks to this, the meat did not burn but retained its warmth, staying hot until the very last bite. What an ingenious and fascinating method. 👍

Smoky and juicy dakgalbi
I picked up a perfectly cooked piece of dakgalbi from this Yangju favorite and tasted it. I could not help but marvel at how smoky, juicy, and tender the lean meat was. Even though we ordered two portions, the serving was more generous than expected. Wrapping a piece of meat with fresh greens and garlic for one big bite was truly delicious even without a separate dipping sauce.

The grilled rice cakes were also a special treat, crisp outside and soft and chewy within.

Water makguksu and spicy mixed makguksu together
As we ate the dakgalbi, we started craving cool noodles, so we ordered water makguksu and spicy mixed makguksu for dessert.

The water makguksu, buckwheat noodles in chilled broth, had a pine-nut broth base, making the soup incredibly nutty and clean-tasting. The sweet-tangy seasoning on the spicy mixed makguksu paired wonderfully with the dakgalbi!

Lifting up a generous bundle of chewy buckwheat noodles with chopsticks and eating them with the meat, I thought that being able to enjoy delicious dakgalbi alongside cool makguksu was this restaurant's real strength. Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi Yangju Branch completely overturned my preconception that charcoal dakgalbi would be skimpy and dry! From the tender meat and ingenious grill setup to the nutty pine-nut broth makguksu, it was a perfect meal.
