Pizzeria in Jeonpo, Busan: spicy yogurt cabbage salad, Freewill Pizza

Freewill Pizza is an American-style pizzeria on Jeonpo-daero 224beon-gil in Busanjin, Busan, near Jeonpo Café Street. Remembering the taste from an earlier visit with Mom, the writer came back and ordered the ₩37,000 Soda Set R: an egg potato and hot chicken shrimp half-and-half pizza with the cabbage salad, plus the tip of dipping the crust in white ranch sauce. Freewill Pizza's spicy, yogurt-flavored cabbage salad is a must-order, good enough to come back for on its own.

Brisket pho Dad drained after Traders in Myeongji, Busan: Mibundang

Mibundang Myeongji Branch (미분당 명지점) is a pho restaurant in Myeongji International New Town, Gangseo-gu, Busan. After grocery shopping at Starfield Traders, the writer's family had one thinly sliced brisket pho (chadolbagi, 10,000 won) and two beef brisket pho (yangji, 11,500 won); the meat toppings were generous and the broth was so rich that Dad finished every last drop. Mibundang Myeongji Branch is a good place for a quiet lunch with parents after a Traders shopping trip.

Jangnim, Busan samgyetang restaurant for lunch with Dad: Kim Jeong-ok

Kim Jeong-ok Eomnamu Samgyetang Jangnim Branch is a samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) and dakgomtang (chicken soup) restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Lotte Cinema building in Jangnim-dong, Saha-gu, Busan. After an upper endoscopy on an empty stomach, the writer and their dad ordered the Eomnamu Samgyetang (17,000 won) and the Dakhanmari Gomtang whole-chicken soup (10,000 won). They were happy with the rich broth, the sticky rice porridge and the complimentary grilled gizzards and fried chicken wings. Kim Jeong-ok Eomnamu Samgyetang is a gentle, filling restorative meal to share with parents in Saha-gu.

Hadan, Busan rice cake shop: 7 small pumpkin injeolmi for Mom, Hohobak

Hohobak (호호박) is a dessert rice cake shop near Exit 1 of Hadan Station in Saha-gu, Busan, known for gift rice cakes and its rice castella pumpkin injeolmi (soft, chewy rice cake). After falling for Hohobak's rice cakes as a thank-you gift and returning several times, the writer bought 7 small rice castella pumpkin injeolmi (₩3,500 each) to share with Mom and kept reaching for more thanks to the soft, chewy texture and gentle sweetness. Hohobak is a Busan gift rice cake shop that even people who don't usually love rice cakes return to.

Daytime sea-view beef BBQ with parents in Dadaepo, Busan: Hwarou

Hwarou Dadaepo is an ocean-view beef BBQ restaurant on the 7th floor of a building near Natgae Station in Saha, Busan. On a daytime visit with her parents, the blogger ate Hwarou Set A (500g of galbi-sal, toshi-sal and salchi-sal, ₩44,500) and mul naengmyeon (cold noodles) while looking out at the sea, for ₩62,000 in total. Her parents were pleased by the thick cuts, the spacious, comfortable dining room and staff who changed the grill without being asked. If you want a beef BBQ spot for a family meal by the sea, Hwarou Dadaepo is a good choice.

Noodle shop near Starfield Myeongji, Busan: mazesoba lunch at Menmen

Menmen Main Branch (멘멘 본점) is a new Japanese noodle restaurant near Neoul Park in Myeongji, Gangseo, Busan, close to Starfield Myeongji. Over lunch with her dad, the writer had mazesoba (10,000 won) and spicy tonkotsu ramen (11,000 won), and mixing free rice from the Menmen self-serve bar into the leftover mazesoba sauce was the most satisfying part. For a Myeongji Japanese noodle shop that does mazesoba properly and suits solo dining, Menmen is a good choice.

New noodle house in Sinpyeong, Busan: water vs spicy milmyeon, parking

Sinpyeong Busan Milmyeon is a new milmyeon (Busan-style chilled wheat noodle) restaurant with housemade noodles in Sinpyeong, Saha, Busan, across from the main gate of Hanam Elementary School. The writer compared water milmyeon (₩8,500) with a double-portion water bibim milmyeon (₩10,500), added fried king mandu (dumplings), and parked at the public lot in front of Sinpyeong Station, a 5-minute walk away (₩1,200 for 1 hour). Fans of a clean, mild broth should order the water milmyeon, spice lovers the water bibim milmyeon, and the fried king mandu were the best dish of the day.

Nampo, Busan Japanese course with cup sake: Ppong Sashimi

Ppong Sashimi is a Japanese-style sashimi course restaurant in Jung-gu, Busan, between Jungangdong Station and Busan Station. Two friends booked the 60,000-won-per-person assorted sashimi course at Ppong Sashimi, working through tuna tartare, assorted sashimi, seasoned grilled flounder, clear fish soup and kimchi fish roe rice, with an 8,000-won The Cup sake on the side. The Ppong Sashimi course near Nampo is generous enough to fill up two big eaters.

Taiwanese teppanyaki in Seomyeon: top blade wasabi rice bowl at Karen

Karen Lotte Department Store Busan Main Branch is a Taiwanese-style teppanyaki restaurant in the B1 food court of Lotte Department Store Busan Main Branch in Seomyeon, Busan. Remembering the Karen teppanyaki from a trip to Taiwan 7 years ago, the writer ordered the premium set for two; the emperor short rib was sold out and swapped for top blade steak, but the top blade rice bowl topped with wasabi and sautéed onions and the stir-fried bean sprouts were especially satisfying. For a lunch while shopping, a solo meal or a date that tastes like teppanyaki in Taiwan, Karen in Seomyeon is a solid pick.

Millak-dong brunch café: Turkish egg & acai bowl, Famous Benny

Famous Benny Gwangalli Branch is an Australian-style brunch café in Millak-dong, Suyeong, Busan, open from 8am and dog-friendly. Over brunch with a friend, the writer ordered an acai bowl, a garlic butter egg (Turkish egg), bacon scramble toast and an iced Americano; the acai bowl loaded with peanut butter and the big slices of sourdough stood out. Famous Benny is the first place that comes to mind for brunch in Gwangalli, and a definite return visit.

Busan izakaya in Seomyeon: squid-free okonomiyaki set at Teppan King

Teppan King is a Japanese teppanyaki izakaya (Japanese-style pub) near Seomyeon Station in Busan. The writer and a friend ordered Set A at Teppan King, a special okonomiyaki plus special yakisoba for ₩28,000, with only the squid left out. They sat at the counter watching the owner cook on the griddle while drinking draft beer and a Suntory highball. Teppan King's okonomiyaki and yakisoba were both satisfying enough to bring back the taste of eating them in Japan.
