Yangyang café with rainy Namdaecheon views: Cafe Dunchi
In short
Cafe Dunchi is a floating café on the lower Namdaecheon River in Yangyang, Gangwon. My husband and I had a hot sweet potato latte and café latte while watching the rain through the large windows; the electric boat ride was unavailable because of rain and strong winds, but we rested comfortably in the café.

Where is Cafe Dunchi, and what views can you see?
During my trip to Yangyang, I visited Cafe Dunchi (카페 둔치), a floating café on the lower Namdaecheon River. I had wanted to visit before the trip because I wanted to see the natural scenery up close.

What I had looked forward to most was the boat ride. I became interested after seeing a notice before my visit saying that electric boat operations had resumed.

From the café, I could see the sea horizon and mountains in the distance at a glance. Looking around from the space floating on the river, I was struck by the open view and relaxed atmosphere.

Could I take the electric boat ride?
Before heading up to the café, there were boats lined up near the entrance. I was told that there were boats for smaller groups and boats for larger groups.

It was raining and very windy on the day I visited, so I could not take a boat. I was disappointed because I had been looking forward to it, and I would like to return on a day with better weather.

The boats are operated by the Namdaecheon Water Leisure Experience Center on the first floor. There was information on fees and safety rules, and I was told that drinks could be brought onboard. I was also told that the boats use electric motors and can be used with children, but I was unable to try one this time.

What is the walk up to the café and the restroom like?
On the way up to the café entrance, there was also Seomdeul Naru (섬들 나루).

There is no restroom inside the café, so I had to use the outdoor restroom.

What can you do indoors and on the terrace?
The interior was decorated to feel like being in a garden. Although I could not take the boat ride, I was able to look around the café and rest.

There was also a terrace. If the weather is good, it seemed like a nice place to drink coffee while watching boats floating on the river.

Namdaecheon Salmon Ecology Park was visible right beside the café through the large windows. The park appeared to be good for a slow walk and photos, with a deck path and an observatory among reeds and Miscanthus grass. The café is spacious enough that it seemed suitable for group gatherings as well.

What did we drink, and how did the prices feel?
Looking at the menu, I felt that the drink prices were not expensive for a café in a tourist area.

I ordered a hot sweet potato latte, and my husband ordered a café latte. They said they use coffee beans supplied by a roastery in Gangneung and make the cheong (fruit preserve syrup) used in the drinks themselves.
Watching the rainy scenery while drinking warm beverages had a lovely atmosphere. I was disappointed not to take the boat ride, but I was able to spend a comfortable time at this café on the river.
