Gangneung Korean BBQ near St. John's Hotel: pork galbi at Chodang Uga

On this trip through Sokcho and Gangneung in Gangwon-do, I got to visit a great dog-friendly BBQ restaurant 🐶 I'd been searching hard for a good spot to bring my dog, and I finally made it here. Right in front of St. John's Hotel, so the location was seriously perfect 👍

Where is Chodang Uga? Parking and opening hours

Chodang Uga is a hanwoo and pork galbi restaurant on Haean-ro, right in front of St. John's Hotel in Gangmun-dong, Gangneung. It's an easy walk from many accommodations while traveling in Gangneung. It's also close to the beach, so it was perfect for stopping by after a walk 🌊

The exterior alone was so clean and grand that I stepped in feeling good haha 🩷

Inside Chodang Uga and the self-serve bar

Walking inside, a gorgeous panoramic mountain scene spread across the wall, and the high ceiling meant there was no cramped feeling at all ✨ The place was spacious!

The tables were spaced out generously too, which made conversation really comfortable.

I'm always looking for dog-friendly restaurants in Gangneung with well-separated spaces ㅠㅠ since it can be uncomfortable for other diners otherwise. 🥹 But here there's a separate section for pets, so I could eat without worrying about it!

The self-serve bar corner was neatly stocked too, so you can help yourself to plenty of wrap veggies or extra side dishes.

As soon as we sat down, I ordered easily via the tablet. The staff were super cheerful too!

There was a dedicated stroller for pets set up in the restaurant, so my dog Ppupu sat comfortably in it.

This kind of thoughtful touch made it instantly clear why this is such a well-known dog-friendly restaurant in Gangneung haha

Glancing over the Chodang Uga menu, there's a wide range from hanwoo (Korean beef) to pork galbi.

The prices were reasonable for what you get, so I could order without much worry 🥩

How the fruit-marinated pork galbi tastes (2 servings)

The main dish we ordered this time was the fruit-marinated pork galbi, two servings!

As soon as the meat hit the grill, a sweet and delicious aroma spread everywhere and made my mouth water 🤤

They use domestic Dodram pork, so the quality of the meat itself was totally on another level. 🥹

Marinated in fruit seasoning like Imgye apples, it melted in my mouth the moment I took a bite — amazing 👏

The balance of sweet and salty was so perfect that I kept reaching for more.

Hanwoo brisket doenjang stew served after the grill

To go with the meat, we added a doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) and steamed rice.

With hanwoo brisket inside, the broth had a deep, savory richness that paired perfectly with the sweet galbi 🥣

A bowl of rice disappears in no time with this magical combo — highly recommend!

Who should eat at Chodang Uga in Gangneung?

Overall, the meal was fully satisfying in both taste and portion 💯

The atmosphere was really pleasant too, and the quality relative to the price felt like great value 👍
