Weekend family lunch with kids at a Seongsu army stew spot: Songtan

My husband had a haircut appointment today, so we all headed out to Seongsu together as a family.

By the time the haircut was done, it was already lunchtime! We debated what to eat, but the kids love budae jjigae (army stew) so much that we decided right away haha.

Here's my honest review of Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae Seongsu Branch, a Seongsu army stew spot we visited~*

Where is Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae Seongsu Branch, and what are its hours?

Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae Seongsu Branch is 31 meters from Seongsu Station Exit 1. Come out the exit and walk along the building's parking lot, and you'll reach the side door of the building.

Go in through that door and head up to the 2nd floor :)

If you're looking for army stew near Seongsu Station, this route gets you there quickly!

Hours are weekdays 11:00–21:30, weekends 11:30–21:00. Last order is 20:30 on weekdays and 20:00 on weekends, and there's no break time.

Retro dining room and the unlimited self-serve bar

There was a sign on the stairwell poster saying they'd never skimp on sausages, which got me excited haha.

Even on a weekend there were only a few other guests, so I wasn't able to take detailed shots of the interior ㅠㅠ

Still, old-school touches like a mother-of-pearl vanity and a Taegukgi (Korean national flag) were scattered around, giving it a strong retro feel. The place is big with plenty of space, so it looked comfortable for sitting with kids.

At one side, there's a self-serve bar where you can help yourself to unlimited rice and side dishes. The basic sides are stir-fried fish cake, green onion kimchi, and pickled onion ~*

After the meal, there's also a dessert corner where you can enjoy free coffee, slushies, and yogurt.

Four of us, but only 3 servings? What the staff advised

Ordering is done via table order, prepaid based on the number of people. The Seongsu army stew menu is priced by serving count — ₩13,000 for 1, ₩26,000 for 2, ₩39,000 for 3.

Our family of four was thinking of ordering 4 servings, but when we asked the staff, they said 4 servings would likely be too much, so we ordered 3 instead.

The ramen noodle add-on (sarì) is ₩2,000, and you can add it as an option when you first order. We also ordered zero-sugar cola and zero-sugar cider.

A stew packed with ham and sausage: how the kids liked it

Once the stew arrived, we set a timer for 5 minutes and waited until it was fully cooked before eating. The pot was piled high with round sausages, long sausages, and ham.

The broth is on the spicy side, but even our elementary-age kids, who can handle some spice, ate it happily while laughing haha.

We scooped rice from the self-serve bar into the stew and topped it with a piece of sausage. As the broth reduced, we poured in more stock from the kettle. And we cooked the ramen noodle add-on using Jin Ramen noodles!!

Budae jjigae is spicy enough that it doubles as a great snack to go with soju or beer haha.

The restaurant is spacious with plenty of tables, so it seems like a great fit for those looking for a Seongsu army stew spot for a work dinner too. We came for a family lunch, but it looked equally suited to after-work gatherings or group meals!

At Songtan Jindaegwang Budae Jjigae Seongsu Branch, a Seongsu army stew spot, we ate plenty with the kids — 3 servings plus the ramen noodle add-on. Rice and side dishes were freely available at the self-serve bar :)
