Once again stuck on what to eat for lunch, I searched near the office and ended up at Gyuen Dang Seongsu Main Branch, a beef katsu spot in Seongsu. It's close to Seongsu Station, and you grill the katsu yourself on a personal tabletop grill, so it felt way more special than your average weekday lunch!

I had the striploin beef katsu at this Seongsu beef katsu spot, and it was so tender with real, savory meaty flavor — even on a short lunch break, I felt properly healed by a good meal, hehe. If you're looking for a good lunch spot in Seongsu or a Japanese restaurant for a Seongsu date, I'd recommend this place.

Is there a wait during lunch?

Gyuen Dang is a well-known beef katsu spot in Seongsu, so there's apparently often a wait during lunch or dinner peak hours — but we lucked out. Especially around noon on weekdays when Seongsu office workers flock in, so if you're visiting for lunch, be prepared for a possible wait.
A cozy Japanese-style space on the 2nd floor

Head up to the 2nd floor of the building and you'll find a cozy space with a distinct Japanese vibe. Wood materials and warm lighting are used throughout, and the walls feature calligraphy and grill-themed decor that make it feel like a local restaurant in Japan.

Since the katsu itself is grilled piece by piece right at the table, it's great for facing each other and chatting while you cook — makes it a good pick for a Seongsu date too. With 2-tops, 4-tops, and counter-style tables, it also felt like a comfortable spot to eat solo!

Even though it's a beef katsu specialty restaurant, the menu is surprisingly varied — omelet rice, rice bowls, curry, udon — so it's a good place to visit with a group where everyone can order to their taste. After going back and forth, we went with the striploin beef katsu!
A tip on how to eat beef katsu

There's also a guide on the table for how to enjoy the katsu best, so I read it thoroughly while waiting for the food. First, try the original flavor... then try melting it with Isigny butter and grilling it that way... 👀
The full striploin beef katsu spread

After a short wait, the striploin beef katsu finally arrived. Unlike the crispy fried exterior, the inside of the meat still had a red tinge, which looked incredibly appetizing at first sight. It doesn't come as just the katsu alone — it's served with rice, miso soup, cabbage salad, pickled radish, Isigny butter, fresh wasabi, salt, and a special sauce.
With the whole spread laid out, it felt more filling than expected — a great, proper meal at a Seongsu lunch spot. It doesn't come fully cooked from the start; the inside is close to rare, so you grill it piece by piece on the small tabletop grill to your liking. I found it tastiest to just lightly sear it on both sides rather than cooking it all the way through.

Grilling it in Isigny butter
One thing you have to try here is grilling the katsu in Isigny butter! First I just grilled it plain on the grill, then melted a bit of butter and laid the katsu on top — as the butter sizzled and melted, coating the meat in a savory aroma, the flavor completely transformed.

Listening to it sizzle as you grill each piece right before eating made it more fun than just having a finished dish handed to you. It'd be great to visit on a date and enjoy grilling it together.

Butter + striploin beef katsu + fresh wasabi combo
The savory flavor comes through especially strong when it's grilled in butter. Personally, I recommend this combo: butter + striploin beef katsu + fresh wasabi! The wasabi's sharp kick cuts through what could otherwise get a bit greasy from the butter, so you end up popping the next piece on right away, lol.

Striploin, but surprisingly tender
When you hear striploin, you usually think of a cut with a bit more chew than tenderloin, but here it was really soft. Lightly grilled on the tabletop grill and eaten hot right away, the outside was crispy while the inside stayed juicy and tender — 'melts in your mouth' is really the right way to describe it.

You'd think eating beef katsu the whole time might get repetitive, but with so many different pairings, I enjoyed it right down to the last piece. First piece plain, to taste the meat itself, then salt, then fresh wasabi, and finally the special sauce!
The special sauce had a real umami punch and went great with rice. Being able to keep switching up how you eat a single striploin beef katsu made it surprisingly fun.

After eating my way through it, I realized beef katsu can be enjoyed in so many ways — plain, grilled in Isigny butter, with salt, wasabi, and the special sauce — so ordering just one striploin beef katsu turned out to be more varied and fun than expected.
