While looking for somewhere to eat in Gwacheon, I went to Bibisam Gwacheon Main Branch, which specializes in torim bibimbap, for dinner. I was curious about applying the torim method I associated with gukbap to bibimbap, and it also had yukhoe bibimbap, which I like, so I ordered it.

Where is Bibisam Gwacheon Main Branch, and is there parking?

The restaurant is at 101, 1st floor, 10-13 Saesulmak-gil, Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It is also within walking distance of Government Complex Gwacheon Station. We drove, but the restaurant does not provide parking support, so we used a nearby paid public parking lot. Since parking costs extra, it would be wise to check the locations of nearby public parking lots before driving there.

Is the atmosphere comfortable for dining alone?

Inside, there were wood-toned tables and warm-colored chairs. Information about brassware and torim throughout the space made it feel like traditional Korean food had been presented with a contemporary touch.

The tables were spaced far enough apart that it was comfortable for two people to eat together. It also felt like an atmosphere where eating alone would not feel too awkward.

There was a waiting list at the entrance when I visited. I thought it might get busy at lunchtime, but I did not confirm what the actual lunch wait was like.

How do ordering and food pickup work?

Because the restaurant operates with a small staff, food pickup and dish return were self-service. I looked through the menu and ordered on the tablet at the table, then picked up my food myself from the pickup counter once it was ready. Finished dishes are returned at the return counter.

It may feel unfamiliar at first, but instructions were posted throughout the restaurant, so it was not difficult. I served myself as much soup and as many side dishes as I wanted from the self-service bar, and could go back for more if needed.

How much are the yukhoe bibimbap and extra Korean beef yukhoe?

The yukhoe bibimbap I ordered that day was ₩11,000, and the side order of Korean beef yukhoe was an additional ₩7,000. I wanted plenty of yukhoe, so I ordered the side as well.

When the food arrived, the meal was more generous than I expected. A large bowl held rice, bean sprouts, various namul (seasoned vegetable side dishes), mushrooms, egg, and vegetables arranged neatly.

How was torim bibimbap different from regular bibimbap?

Bibisam says it serves rice that has been torim, then seasoned, so plain white rice is not prepared separately. The rice was already stained with seasoning from the moment it arrived.

After mixing everything evenly, the seasoned rice and ingredients came together well. The crisp bean sprouts mixed with tender namul and egg, so each bite had several textures.

Was the extra Korean beef yukhoe worth adding?

As someone who likes yukhoe, I was glad I added it. The restaurant had a notice saying it does not use meat tenderizer in its yukhoe. Even when mixed with the other ingredients, the long-cut yukhoe still had a distinct texture.

With the extra yukhoe added, chewy yukhoe, crisp bean sprouts, tender egg, and namul all came together in each bite. I liked being able to eat yukhoe with the rice until the end, without feeling as though only rice was left.

The baek-kimchi (mild white kimchi) was crisp and good to pick at between bites of the seasoned bibimbap. Having warm soup alongside it also made the meal feel more substantial.

With the various namul and extra yukhoe, the meal was more filling than I expected, and I finished the bowl cleanly. At ₩11,000 for the main dish, it did not feel like a burdensome price for a meal in Gwacheon. I think I would remember it on a day when I wanted seasoned torim rice with yukhoe. However, it is worth keeping in mind that food pickup and dish return are self-service, and parking costs extra.
