Yongsan instant tteokbokki, 20-minute wait, fried rice: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is an instant tteokbokki (rice cake stir-fry) restaurant on Hangang-daero 39-gil near Sinyongsan Station in Yongsan, Seoul. After only ever ordering the Hyeonseonine set for delivery from other branches, the writer visited the shop for the first time, waited about 20 minutes past lunch hour, and cooked the tteokbokki right at the table. Finishing the leftover sauce with fried rice turned it into a filling full meal.

I was craving tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes) in Yongsan and looked around, which led me to Hyeonseonine! I'd only ever had the Hyeonseon Set delivered from various branches, but since this place is famous for its instant tteokbokki, I finally visited in person and had a proper go at it — tteokbokki through to fried rice :)
Where is Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, and what are its hours?

Hyeonseonine sits in a red building with a distinctive sign mixing yellow and red, so it stood out even from a distance. There was a waiting area set up in front of the building, and when I visited there were quite a few people waiting. Definitely looked like a well-known Yongsan restaurant with plenty of visitors.

Catch Table waiting: a 20-minute queue past lunch hour
You can wait for a table at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch through Catch Table! It seems like a lot of international visitors come here too, so it's handy that multiple languages are supported! As for the menu — I usually order the Hyeonseon Set, but today I specifically ordered the instant tteokbokki!

Honestly I visited thinking it'd be less crowded since it was past lunchtime, but wow... true to its reputation, the place was packed! Turnover wasn't slow, though, so I got in after about a 20-minute wait! The restaurant seemed larger than other branches too!

How to cook Hyeonseonine's instant tteokbokki at your table
There were instructions for cooking the instant tteokbokki right on the table at Hyeonseonine. It kindly explained heat control and even how to make the fried rice afterward, so even first-timers could cook it without trouble. The key point: when boiling the tteokbokki, stir well so the noodle sari (add-in noodles) or egg don't stick to the bottom of the pot!

The self-serve fried batter flakes are the best part
Such a clean self-serve bar!! And that fried batter powder?? I think that's a total kicker!! Add it to the fish cake broth they give you by default and it's genuinely delicious!!

How the tteokbokki tastes: rice cakes, fish cake, egg and glass noodles
My instant tteokbokki arrived! The pot was generously packed with rice cake, fish cake, egg, glass noodles and more, and the red sauce broth looked appetizing just to see. Since you cook it yourself right at the table, once it starts bubbling and that spicy tteokbokki smell rises up, your appetite really kicks in. The glass noodles soaking up the broth and turning chewy was especially good, and eating the fish cake and egg together made for a nice combination of ingredients.

Finishing with fried rice in the leftover sauce
Once you've eaten your fill of the tteokbokki, fried rice is unmissable! Adding rice, gim (dried seaweed) flakes, and kimchi to the leftover tteokbokki sauce and frying it up looked mouthwatering just from the visuals. The tteokbokki sauce soaked into the rice, keeping that spicy-sweet flavor intact, plus the nutty aroma of the gim flakes on top — perfect as a finishing dish. It was so good that the leftover sauce would've been a shame to waste, so I really recommend getting the fried rice too. The spicy sauce plus nutty gim flakes let me finish the meal deliciously right to the end. Instant tteokbokki really does feel complete only after the fried rice finale 😋
Is Hyeonseonine worth it for tteokbokki in Yongsan?

You can add various sari (add-in ingredients) to the tteokbokki to suit your taste, and finishing with fried rice makes for a hearty, satisfying meal. Best of all, there's the fun of cooking it yourself at the table, which makes it a great spot to visit with friends or a partner while chatting over the pot.
