Cheongju BBQ with soy sauce pork belly: Baeksan Hwarro Songjeol

Today I finally visited a fantastic BBQ place I'd been eyeing while shuttling back and forth to a baby clinic near home. It's 'Baeksan Hwarro Techno Polis Songjeol Branch,' which has been getting a lot of word-of-mouth buzz as a Songjeong-dong go-to spot in Cheongju!

"Every neighborhood needs at least one solid BBQ place!" I thought, and on a day my husband got off work early, we grabbed the baby's hand and headed over excitedly.

Where is Baeksan Hwarro Techno Polis Songjeol Branch, and when is it open?

The address is 829 Songjeol-dong, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. Hours are Friday through Wednesday 11:30–01:00 (last order 00:30), and Thursday 14:30–23:00 (last order 22:30).

Amenities include parking, baby chairs & baby dishes, and Naver reservations are available. There were various coupon events running right now if you book through Naver — especially a nice perk like an egg custard coupon for visits with a baby, so I'd recommend booking through Naver before the event ends!

We arrived a bit after 5:30pm, and the place was already fairly full, from big family dinners to cozy couple dates. We got seated and looked at the grill — not an ordinary grill plate but a thick square charcoal grill plate, so it grabbed attention visually right away.

We picked the signature aged pork belly and pork neck, plus a Cheongju-style soy sauce pork belly I'd never seen before. On top of that, we boldly ordered egg custard and kimchi cheonggukjang for the baby... and that's when an unexpected event (?) happened.

The moment we hit the order button, the owner rushed over and said, "Excuse me... the egg custard and kimchi cheonggukjang actually come as free service..." For a second I thought, "Did we do something wrong?" and then a wave of being touched hit me...

On top of that, thanks to a Naver review event, they even gave us a drink and an extra serving of soy sauce pork belly, so I genuinely worried whether the owner was making any profit at all!

The basic side dishes came out, and even the macaroni pieces were unusually big, so I thought "this place is amazing" — and the taste was incredibly savory and perfect too.

When we ordered a rice bowl, out came a nutty barley rice, piled up like a farmhand's serving, rarely seen these days. I could really feel the owner's generous spirit of "eat until you're stuffed!"

And the complimentary egg custard had none of that typical restaurant saltiness, so it was perfect for feeding the baby! I mixed it into rice for her, and she gobbled it up with sparkling eyes. (Mom pride moment... anyone watching would think I made it myself...)

How good are the aged pork belly and pork neck?

Finally, the gorgeous pork belly and pork neck arrived! Along with mushrooms and shishito peppers, they came with a sticker showing the weight and price just like at a butcher shop, which boosted my trust by 200%!

It sizzled on the charcoal grill plate, and waiting for it felt like forever. The moment I popped a well-cooked piece into the baby's mouth, she went "Mmm~!!" and kept demanding more, and things got a little wild.

Kids' taste buds really don't lie. If my husband hadn't been taking care of the baby next to me, I might not have gotten to see the meat at all until she was full.

After filling the baby's tummy enough, it was finally my turn! I put a bit of pungent wasabi on the meat, and inside I just went "this is it, this is exactly it..." The sauces that came alongside paired so well with the meat too — I could tell the owner was truly serious about their meat.

This isn't just a good BBQ spot in Songjeong-dong — it's a top BBQ restaurant in all of Cheongju. The aged meat is insanely good.

My beloved shredded green onions were also fully stocked at the self-serve bar, and I honestly lost count of how many times I piled some on.

Cheongju-style soy sauce pork belly: sweet, salty and worth ordering

Right around when we'd comfortably finished the pork belly and pork neck, the owner brought out the soy sauce pork belly with impeccable timing — I was blown away by the sense of it. This soy sauce pork belly, my first time trying it, had a savory sauce soaked right into the meat, tasting almost like galbi (short rib), sweet and salty in perfect balance!

Grilling the chives and peppers that came in a jar right alongside the meat and eating them together was truly an eye-opening flavor!

As it turns out, Baeksan Hwarro's meat is aged in-house, and the soy sauce and kimchi cheonggukjang are also fermented carefully in-house.

No wonder the flavor had such unusual depth. Next time I'm planning to come at lunch to try the pot rice and naengmyeon (cold noodles) combo too.

Can you bring a baby to Baeksan Hwarro? Service and facilities

Parents will get this — no matter how good a restaurant is, if the baby fusses and it gets chaotic, you often just shove food in and leave. But here, the meat was so delicious that my husband and I took turns holding her every five minutes and still scraped up the very last spoonful. It's been a long time since I saw my husband finish his rice bowl to the last grain!

The owner and staff's thoughtfulness was amazing too — neatly folded bibs as a matter of course, and when the baby dropped her spoon, they somehow spotted it despite being busy and brought a fresh set right away. Truly touching...

Having a restroom inside the restaurant was so convenient too. The interior was clean, and the mirror in front of the restroom was big enough for a post-meal check. (It's unisex, so lock the main door — good sense!)

On the way out, there's a full lineup — air freshener, the well-branded My Sense, floss, candy, even coffee. That kind of thoughtfulness is exactly why a place like this can't help but do well.

A Cheongju BBQ restaurant I can confidently recommend to friends — Baeksan Hwarro Techno Polis Songjeol Branch! We had a great, delicious meal with our baby. We're definitely going back!
