September night terrace jokbal in Gangdong, Seoul: Iseon Hwaduk

In short

Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam Myeongil Branch is a wood-fired jokbal (braised pig's trotter) restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 2 of Myeongil Station in Gangdong, Seoul. On a cool September evening, a married couple sat on the outdoor terrace and shared the whole-leg jokbal platter (large, front leg) at 55,000 won, steamed egg at 5,000 won, and a complimentary soft tofu stew. The wood-fired smokiness tasted even better outdoors, and Iseon Hwaduk was still worth the return visit.

Wood-fired jokbal (pig's trotter) full of smoky flavor near Myeongil Station

The weather has gotten so nice since September started. With cool breezes morning and evening, I keep wanting to eat outside these days. This time I came back again to eat wood-fired, smoky jokbal on the outdoor terrace haha

Of course we headed straight for the terrace seats again this time. The inside hall is clean too, but in September weather outside is really the answer. The wind blows softly, and as the sun sets the air cools down—that's the time for weather perfect for tearing into jokbal haha

What is the 55,000-won whole-leg jokbal platter like?

| Iseon Hwaduk menu: whole-leg jokbal platter (large/front leg) - 55,000 won

Whole-leg jokbal platter, large front leg, 55,000 won spread

The moment the plate arrived, it was glistening. Get close and the wood-fired smoky scent rises first. It wasn't the usual strong jokbal smell but a savory, charred aroma, which made me even more excited.

Whole-leg jokbal platter with a lit candle underneath

There's a candle kept lit under the plate, so you can eat it warm all the way through. And the subtle smoky scent is nice too!

Cross-section of glistening wood-fired jokbal

One bite and the smoky flavor bursts on the outside while the inside melts tenderly. Chewy on the outside, soft on the inside—jokbal that's fun to chew.

A piece of wood-fired jokbal placed on a lettuce leaf

Wrapped it up neatly in lettuce wraps too, and there's a vegetable side dish refill zone.

Jokbal spread served with vegetable side dishes

Since it's wood-fired jokbal, eating it outdoors made the smoky flavor feel even more alive. Being the front leg cut, the meat near the bone was chewy with a real collagen texture. Good wrapped in a lettuce leaf or just eaten plain—kept reaching for more.

Close-up of front leg jokbal meat

My husband really dug in again this time. He picked the bones completely clean, not leaving a single bit of meat, until the plate was totally empty haha *The wood-fired oven space that makes the jokbal even better!

The wood-fired oven is the best!! Jokbal grilled so well over the fire! Smoky jokbal really is delicious!

Steamed egg for 5,000 won alongside the jokbal

Golden-brown puffed-up steamed egg

It looked fluffy and light with a golden-brown top. Scoop it with a spoon and steam rises, releasing a savory egg aroma.

A spoonful of fluffy steamed egg

Soft and fluffy from the very first bite. Seasoned nicely with salt, so it went really well with the jokbal.

When my mouth felt a bit heavy from the jokbal, a spoonful of steamed egg made it gentle again. The portion was generous too, just right for two people.

If you're wondering what side to pair with jokbal, I'd definitely recommend the steamed egg.

Why Iseon Hwaduk is worth a return visit

| Iseon Hwaduk Jokbal Bossam, known for its impressive wood-fired smoky flavor

It was good the first time, and it was still just as good coming back again. Wood-fired jokbal eaten outdoors on a beautiful day—that combination alone is already enough, but adding the fluffy steamed egg made the whole spread completely satisfying. It was an evening thoroughly filled with collagen and protein. Chatting quietly with my husband while eating in the breeze was really lovely ♥︎ When the weather's nice, it seems worth enjoying the outdoor terrace seating.
