Gangdong grilled eel with bokbunja salt: Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel
In short

For me while I was recovering from surgery, Otter Husband took me to Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel (장수촌풍천장어), a great eel spot in Amsa! They grill high-quality eel with a special purple salt made with Gochang bokbunja (Korean black raspberry), and there was complimentary eel extract, eel loach soup, and even garaetteok (cylindrical rice cake) for dessert. It was such a satisfying Gangdong eel restaurant that I want to revisit anytime 🐾
Getting to Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel from Amsa Station

It is right on the right after a two-minute walk from Exit 1 of Amsa Station, so the location was excellent. There is also free parking for around eight cars directly in front of the restaurant, so parking was stress-free.
A spacious eel restaurant for family gatherings

I was surprised by how enormous it was the moment I walked in! We arrived right at the 11 a.m. opening, and they said it gets busier at dinner than at lunch.

There are no private rooms, but the restaurant is so roomy and the tables are generously spaced, making for a comfortable meal. I wanted to bring my parents back. Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel is one of the Amsa restaurants I would wholeheartedly recommend for a family gathering 👍

This otter couple ate while looking out at the view, and the natural light was lovely too.

They say they prepare and serve domestic Grade 1 live eel on the same day. Maybe that is why it felt exceptionally fresh. At the self-serve bar, you can refill the side dishes and ssam vegetables (wrap greens) without limit, and the side dishes were practically at the level of an upscale Korean set meal—I was really pleased.
Eel and grilled-menu prices

The main dish is salt-grilled eel. There is also beef short rib meat for anyone who cannot eat eel, plus grilled abalone and grilled king prawns; in winter, they also offer grilled scallops and steamed oysters. It seemed like everyone could find something to enjoy at a family gathering or group meal.
Receipt-review grilled king prawn event

Leave a Naver receipt review and you receive grilled king prawns free of charge. Since it is autumn king-prawn season, I think it would be great value to enjoy them alongside the eel.

From eel extract and side dishes to eel loach soup

One kilogram of eel is just right for two people! Well, actually, we were stuffed haha. As soon as we ordered, they first brought out eel extract that they said they had simmered themselves. It was wonderfully rich, pleasantly fragrant rather than smelly, and lightly sweet, so I downed it in one go 👍

The basic spread was packed with shredded ginger, salad, dressed lotus root, seasoned chives, green-onion kimchi, pickled perilla leaves, white kimchi, garlic, and wrap greens. The dressed lotus root was the best! Nothing was overly seasoned or tasted heavily of additives; it had that lovely homemade touch and was delicious without being as intense as an upscale Korean set meal. My parents would really love these flavors ❤️ The four wrap greens—young napa cabbage, danggui (Korean angelica), lettuce, and perilla leaves—were all fresh too. I had never tried eel with danggui elsewhere, but it was truly a genius pairing ❤️ Even my husband, who usually dislikes its aroma, said it went perfectly with the eel and ate it happily.

Another touching point! The eel loach soup arrived bubbling in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot), and this was complimentary too. They said it is made by simmering eel bones and heads thoroughly, with plump cleaned loaches added whole. It tasted natural and not heavily seasoned with additives, yet had such depth that even I, someone who usually does not like loach soup, could not put my spoon down 👍 They also sell it as an à la carte meal for ₩11,000, and apparently many people come specifically for it.
Eel grilled for you from start to finish
The grill was sparkling clean, without a trace of old grease. I think even people particular about hygiene would be happy 👍 Eel really does taste best over charcoal. A veteran staff member grilled it deliciously from beginning to end, so we only had to sit back and enjoy it. Not having one person work away at the grill during a family gathering is a huge advantage!

The 1 kg of salt-grilled eel we ordered was truly plentiful for two. Grilled with their special purple salt made from Gochang bokbunja, it had even deeper flavor 👍 Precious bokbunja salt—it was fascinating, like a specialty you can taste only here!

Eel turning beautifully golden! The owner moved from table to table, grilling it with care, and even cleaned it meticulously before cutting it into easy-to-eat pieces. It was perfect, with nothing getting in the way 👍 Just look at those thick pieces of eel!

For sauces, there was a basic teriyaki-style sauce and a tangy red sauce they brought separately. Both were nice, but I preferred the red sauce. It felt like a secret sauce they serve when you ask for it separately, haha.
Complimentary grilled king prawns for a receipt review

These are the six king prawns we received after writing a Naver receipt review. Grilled king prawns normally cost ₩15,000 for seven, but just by leaving a review, you get such premium service.

The grilled king prawns we tried during autumn prawn season were fresh and large, with a real burst of prawn flavor. It felt like we had gone to the West Sea to enjoy grilled king prawns 👍 They also gave us plastic gloves, so peeling the shells did not leave any smell on our hands.

They kindly removed the legs attached to the prawn bodies and prepared them so they were easy to eat, saying that eating the heads is good for you too. I crunched right through them, shell and all 👍
Finishing with king oyster mushrooms and grilled rice-cake skewers

They also grilled king oyster mushrooms and two rice-cake skewers, and they said children really love the skewers. But they were chewy, crisp outside and soft inside—something adults and kids alike would love! I dipped the king oyster mushrooms, full of mushroom juices, into the Gochang bokbunja salt.
ASMR of eel sizzling as it turns golden ❤️

The happy fullness was the best! I properly nourished my body while recovering from surgery ❤️ When you are this full, a walk is essential! It is close to Amsa Ecological Park, Gwangnaru Hangang Park, Amsa General Market, and the Amsa-dong Prehistoric Settlement Site, so it is perfect for a walk after a hearty meal.
