Gangneung sundubu restaurant with skate sikhae wraps: Jeong Eunsuk
In short
Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is a Chodang sundubu (soft tofu) restaurant at 200 Nanseolheon-ro in Gangneung, run by an owner who grew up beside the birthplace of the poet Heo Nanseolheon. A couple visiting with a baby under one ordered the Chodang Myeongpum table and added grilled kodari (half-dried pollock) in chili sauce and bossam (boiled pork), and the sundubu hot pot broth with blue crab plus bossam wrapped with gajami sikhae (fermented flatfish) were the highlights. Baby chairs are available, so Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu works well as one meal on a Gangneung trip with an infant.

On this trip to Gangneung, we went to try chodang sundubu (soft tofu) — something you really have to eat once you're in Gangneung!
Where is Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu, and when is it open?
Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu is at 200 Nanseolheon-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do. It's open Mondays 8:00–16:00 and Wednesday–Sunday 8:00–18:30, with last order at 15:00 on Mondays and 17:30 Wednesday–Sunday. Closed every Tuesday, parking is available, there are baby chairs, and restrooms are accessible. The signature dish is the Chodang Tofu Rice Table, and there's also the Chodang Myeongpum Table, Chodang Sundubu Jeongol, Tofu Jeongol, and more.
This trip was the three of us again — my husband, our baby under a year old, and me!! Traveling with a baby, when picking a place to eat we always end up checking first whether it'll be comfortable for the baby too,,,,
Tofu carried on from the Heo Nanseolheon birthplace: the exterior

Gangneung has so many great sundubu spots that I researched ahead of the trip! What stood out about Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu was the story that the owner was born and raised at the birthplace of poet Heo Nanseolheon in Chodang, and has carried on the tofu they ate and made growing up there!!!

In the photo you can see the phrase written up: "Tofu eaten and made since childhood, born and raised at the Chodang Heo Nanseolheon birthplace"~~

Rather than just eating sundubu, knowing the food story of the Chodang area made it feel a bit more special 👍🏻
Inside Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu and its baby chairs

Inside, the atmosphere was clean and tidy, and we saw other families dining there too, just like us!

Especially since we came with our baby, it was great that baby chairs were already set up! 🫶🏻
Chodang Myeongpum table plus grilled kodari and bossam
We ordered the Chodang Myeongpum Table, plus grilled kodari (dried pollock), plus bossam (boiled pork)!!

When traveling, you end up eating all sorts of things here and there, so for one meal I really craved something plain and not too heavy.

Sharing the soft sundubu and the side dishes with my husband made for a filling, satisfying meal ✌🏻

The sundubu was soft and mild, easy to eat without any heaviness, and you could really taste the tofu's own nutty flavor!

Can a baby under one eat the tofu here?
And do you know the name of this shrimp..? Maybe that's why the broth was so refreshing!! Since our baby is still under a year old, instead of feeding straight adult food we mostly gave small bits of the mildly seasoned tofu — it was great having a menu like this to share with the baby while traveling~~

The sundubu jeongol (hot pot) we ordered also had crab in it! Maybe because of the crab, the broth had that distinct refreshing seafood flavor! Eating the broth together with the tofu, it was mild yet savory, and went really well with rice!

Bossam wrapped with gajami sikhae: the standout combination
And personally, what I really loved was the bossam. The meat was tender, clean of any gamey smell, and delicious even on its own — but the skate sikhae (fermented flatfish) served alongside was seriously the highlight!! haha

I was curious what skate sikhae would taste like at first, but wrapped up in a lettuce leaf together with the bossam, it worked perfectly! Its savory depth added flavor to the bossam, which could otherwise be a bit plain. Honestly, this combination is what stuck with me the most~~!
The sundubu was delicious, but the combination of tofu, bossam, and skate sikhae is a must-try! I went in only thinking about the common Gangneung sundubu, and came out having also enjoyed the skate sikhae hahaha

The grilled kodari with seasoning was seriously delicious too!! An absolute rice thief~~!!
