Daejeon agujjim restaurant with a noodle and fried rice finish

In short

Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum is a monkfish braise, stir-fried octopus and seafood braise restaurant on Yuseong-daero in Yuseong, Daejeon, near Jaundae. On a weekday visit at 1pm, the order was the small monkfish and octopus braise with added somyeon (thin wheat noodles) and fried rice, and the whole octopus laid over the top plus the medium spice level, about as hot as Shin Ramyun, stood out most. Mixing the somyeon into the sauce like bibim guksu and finishing with fried rice is the heart of the meal at Seommaeul.

Where is Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum in Daejeon?

Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum is a monkfish, octopus and seafood braise specialist on the 1st floor at 1163 Yuseong-daero, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. I went looking it up under Daejeon agujjim restaurant, Yuseong-gu seafood braise restaurant, and Jaundae agujjim restaurant 🏃‍♂️

Parking and seating at Seommaeul: good for family meals and group dinners?

Seommaeul's private parking lot is split to the left and right of the building! The lot was spacious, so it was easy to visit by car too!

I visited around 1pm, and about 5 tables were already eating~ The big room and wide table spacing made Seommaeul a great pick for family meals or group dinners~

Seommaeul's spice levels are split into four: mild 🌶 / medium (Shin Ramyun) 🌶🌶 / spicy (Buldak) 🌶🌶🌶 / extra spicy 🌶🌶🌶🌶. Beyond that there are specialty dishes, optional add-ons like noodle sides, and a drinks menu.

Ordering the small monkfish and octopus braise with somyeon and fried rice

I ordered the monkfish and octopus braise with a side of thin wheat noodles and fried rice added on. While waiting for the food, the basic side dishes served were also neat and clean.

What the whole octopus on Seommaeul's agujjim looks like

And finally the 'monkfish and octopus braise' arrived. The small size comes out on a huge plate piled high with monkfish braise, and I couldn't stop admiring how an entire, beautifully cooked octopus was laid whole on top^^

While cutting the octopus into bite-sized pieces, the springy octopus and the spicy, savory aroma of the monkfish braise hit my nose. I tried the springy octopus first, and it was cooked soft and tender — genuinely delicious!!

Living up to its reputation as a Daejeon agujjim restaurant (a Jaundae agujjim restaurant, no less), the monkfish meat was really plump and substantial. One bite and the soft yet chewy texture was outstanding.

How spicy is Seommaeul's medium spice level?

The 'medium' level in particular was exactly about as spicy as Shin Ramyun, so even people who can't handle spicy food much could enjoy it comfortably. Among Yuseong-gu seafood braise restaurants, this was an addictive sauce flavor — not overly harsh, yet you keep reaching for more. Eaten with the octopus and monkfish meat, it was a fantastic pairing 👍

Don't skip the finish: somyeon bibim guksu and fried rice

Once you've fished out most of the monkfish and octopus, it's time to mix the leftover sauce with the thin wheat noodles. Mixing noodles into the agujjim sauce felt just like eating a spicy bibim guksu (cold mixed noodles). The soft noodles soaked up plenty of the spicy sauce — definitely try this extra treat!

And fried rice is a must too!

I left a little sauce and asked the owner to make fried rice with it, and it came back out delicious, mixed with roasted seaweed flakes. The fried rice was so good that I let out a little sigh of admiration with every spoonful. I scraped the plate clean and left really full and satisfied.

Three things that make Seommaeul's agujjim special

  • Overwhelming visual of the monkfish & octopus braise: a whole plump octopus piled on top of the braise makes for excellent value.
  • A 'medium' spice level (Shin Ramyun-level) that suits everyone: a pleasant kick of heat that anyone can enjoy, with spice levels adjustable.
  • A perfect finish with noodles and fried rice: mixing noodles into the leftover sauce, then finishing with fried rice, completes the meal.

Final verdict on Seommaeul Agujjim in Yuseong, Daejeon

For anyone looking for a Jaundae agujjim restaurant, I strongly recommend Seommaeul's monkfish and octopus braise. The overwhelming visual, universally likable flavor, and a perfectly rounded-off finish made for a meal anyone would enjoy. In particular, the pleasant spiciness paired with chewy octopus and plump monkfish meat was an unforgettable combination.
