In short

Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum is a monkfish and seafood braise restaurant on the corner of the Jaundae intersection in Yuseong, Daejeon. At Seommaeul the agujjim (braised monkfish) was ordered at the spicy level and eaten with a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot) steamed egg, then finished with fried rice made without gim flakes and topped with the gimjaban (seasoned seaweed) served as a side dish. Seommaeul suits anyone who likes a braise sauce that is sharp and clean rather than thick and starchy.

A visit report on Seommaeul Agujjim in Jaun-dong, Yuseong, Daejeon — Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum. You'll need to take your shoes off before entering!

Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum sits right at the entrance near Jaunndae in Yuseong, on the corner where Sinseong-dong and Jaun-dong split off at the Jaunndae intersection. If you often pass through here — between Sinseong-dong and Gung-dong, near Aekyung Research Institute and Jaunndae — you've probably seen it right at the intersection light.

Facing the restaurant, there's parking in front, and there's also a dedicated lot if you go into the alley behind and follow the signs up. Seommaeul is a well-known agujjim spot, so seats fill up completely during lunch. Naver reservations are available, and rooms can be booked for groups of 5 or more.

The agujjim came out faster than I expected, which was nice. Meanwhile the tables on the other side of the room were already fully booked — bustling with people.

What does Seommaeul's spicy agujjim taste like? Sharp, clean sauce

Seommaeul's agujjim sauce isn't heavy with starch or overly thick — it leans sharp and clean. My friend Chacha, who came with me, gave it high praise as the number one agujjim in Daejeon.

If you don't like a starchy, heavy, or overly thick sauce on your agujjim or seafood braise and prefer something sharp and clean, this Jaun-dong spot, Seommaeul Agujjim & Nakjibokkeum, will definitely suit your taste.

Agujjim topped with bean sprouts and minari

Besides agujjim, plenty of people come in during lunch for nakjibokkeum (stir-fried octopus) and galbitang too. After tasting the sauce on the agujjim, I got really curious about the nakjibokkeum!!!

Picking up a piece of monkfish meat

Normally with agujjim I only really eat the meaty parts, but Seommaeul's monkfish had plump, tender flesh, and it was great eating it crunchy with the sauce, bean sprouts, and minari (water dropwort).

The whole time we ate, we kept saying how delicious the sauce was, getting more and more excited for the fried rice.

Fried rice being made after the agujjim was scooped out

Finishing with fried rice: no gim flakes, gimjaban on top instead

Seommaeul's fried rice is stir-fried separately and brought to the table — they scoop the leftover agujjim into another bowl and make the fried rice right in the bowl the agujjim was served in. They warned us it was very hot to be careful. Sizzling, the smell of savory fried rice filled the air along with the fragrant scent of minari.

Sizzling fried rice with added chives

They added extra chives to the fried rice, giving it an even better texture :-) Since the agujjim sauce was already so good, the fried rice was obviously delicious too.

A spoonful of the fried rice
Fried rice topped with gimjaban

When I ordered the fried rice I asked in advance — if the fried rice normally comes with gim (dried seaweed flakes), please leave it out!! Why? Because there was gimjaban (seasoned seaweed side dish) among the side dishes, and I wanted to top the fried rice with that instead haha. Even nuttier and sweet-salty, so good. I ended up scraping the bowl completely clean.

Worth a return trip for agujjim near Jaundae and Sinseong-dong?

Seommaeul's agujjim was more delicious than I expected — definitely a place I'd want to bring my parents back to. If you're looking for a good agujjim or seafood braise restaurant around Yuseong, Jaunndae, or Sinseong-dong, I'd recommend it!
