Kkankkanhan Jokbal Main Branch in Wolgye-dong, Cheomdan, Gwangju is a place I go back to whenever I'm craving jokbal (Korean braised pig's trotter).
Not long ago I came here with my son and had the charcoal-grilled jokbal, but this time I ended up having dinner with just my daughter. She got off work and I said "jokbal?!" and she said "deal!" and we headed straight out haha.

Charcoal-grilled jokbal or old-style king jokbal: which to order at Kkankkanhan?
When I come here I usually go for the charcoal-grilled jokbal. That subtle charcoal aroma and the extra grilling it gets are exactly my thing.
But when I asked my daughter, she said she actually prefers the plain boiled jokbal over the charcoal-grilled one. Same jokbal, totally different tastes, haha.

So this time we ordered to match her taste — the old-style king jokbal for 41,000 won. It's actually 1,000 won cheaper than the charcoal-grilled version, which is 42,000 won.
The king jokbal had no gamey smell at all, clean and tender. If the charcoal-grilled one's charm is its smoky flavor, the king jokbal lets you enjoy the pure taste of jokbal in a more relaxed way — a different kind of appeal.
Flying fish roe rice balls for 4,000 won, my daughter's favorite dish
And the dish my daughter said was the best this time was the flying fish roe rice balls, 4,000 won! You're supposed to shape them into little round balls, but we couldn't be bothered, so we just mixed everything together and scooped it up with spoons haha.
The popping texture of the flying fish roe combined with the seaweed flakes went really well with the jokbal, and my daughter dug right in. She even declared it the number one rice ball in Gwangju. The complimentary side dishes were generous too.

The steamed egg came out moist and soft, not overdone, and the doenjang (soybean paste) stew was especially good that day.
The salad was served generously too, and the cold bean sprout soup was refreshing with a slight kick — perfect to sip between bites of jokbal.

Watching the kitchen flames on a weekday evening in Wolgye-dong
One thing that's oddly fun about coming to Kkankkanhan Jokbal Main Branch is watching the kitchen. Every time a charcoal-grilled jokbal order comes in, flames shoot up in the kitchen — it's cool, almost like watching a fire show.

Even while we were eating in, takeout and delivery orders kept going out nonstop. There are quite a lot of staff, and even while busy juggling orders and packing, they stayed friendly — it's a place that always leaves me in a good mood.
Is it normal for a weekday evening to be this crowded, haha?

There's a restroom inside the store, which is convenient when visiting with kids, and that day there was baseball playing on the big screen, so we got to enjoy dinner while watching the game. There are also 3 private rooms, which makes it a good option for family meals or gatherings.

Free ice cream at the dessert corner
Once the meal's done, you can't skip the dessert zone. Of course my daughter went straight for the ice cream!
Looking at the ice cream, she suddenly asked if there were CCTV cameras here.
"Mom, what if someone just takes all of it at once?"
She said, worrying about other people's ice cream, hahaha.

Eating jokbal until we were full and then finishing off with a cool ice cream made for a proper end to dinner.

When tastes split, order the half-and-half jokbal
Last time it was charcoal-grilled jokbal with my son, this time old-style king jokbal with my daughter. Both have their own charm.
- If you like the subtle charcoal aroma and grilled flavor, go for the charcoal-grilled jokbal
- If you prefer softly boiled classic jokbal, go for the old-style king jokbal

Kids' tastes vary too, so if your family's preferences are split, ordering the half-and-half jokbal is a good option.

They're running a receipt review event where you get a mini spicy bossam (boiled pork wraps) or flying fish roe rice balls, so make sure to leave a review and grab that!
