Cheomdan Chinese restaurant, solo set meal and self-serve bar: Mayway

In short

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant in Cheomdan, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, near Lotte Mart Cheomdan and Gyeojassi Church, and it is the long-loved Daeheung Banjeom reborn with upgraded cooking. The writer ordered brisket jjamppong (spicy noodle soup) for 13,900 won and the solo set meal of jjajang, jjamppong and tangsuyuk for 12,900 won, added unlimited rice and scallion kimchi from the self-serve bar, and finished with cherry ice cream. Both the smoky, brisket-loaded jjamppong and the thick jjajang are generous with ingredients, so Mayway is worth a return trip for Chinese food in Cheomdan.

Where is Mayway in Cheomdan, Gwangju, and what are its hours?

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant at 6 Cheomdangangbyeon-ro 87beon-gil, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. It's open daily 11:00–22:00 (break time 15:00–17:00) — check the store for contact info — and parking is on nearby streets. They offer all-you-can-eat rice, group seating, reservations, separate men's/women's restrooms, delivery, a high chair, and takeout.

Today I visited Mayway, a well-known Chinese spot in Cheomdan. I'd heard it was famous for stone-griddle jjajang and always wanted to try it, and it turns out it's right near the place I'm about to move to?! Already planning to become a regular 〰️〰️ here's my review :)

What Mayway looks like from the street

Mayway, a popular Cheomdan spot, sits near Lotte Mart Cheomdan and Gyeojassi Church. There's no dedicated parking lot, so park on a nearby street or use Lotte Mart! This place used to operate for years as the beloved Daeheung Jeomjeom, and has now been reopened as Mayway with upgraded flavors and dishes.

Inside Mayway: the self-serve bar and its standout scallion kimchi

The inside of Mayway was really clean and pleasant. And the moment you walk in, you're greeted with such a hearty, friendly welcome that it sticks with you. There's even a big screen inside!

Side dishes are self-serve, and rice is unlimited too! The scallion kimchi (pajeon-kimchi) here is genuinely insane -‼️‼️‼️

I'd already ordered before I saw this scallion kimchi ㅠㅠ so I went with jjamppong, but next time I'm definitely getting the stone-griddle jjajang! With visuals like this, it has to be jjajang...

Mayway serves a solo set meal — jjajang (black bean noodles) + jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) + either tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) or tricolor dumplings. Getting three flavors in one meal is great! From jjajang and jjamppong to fried rice, seafood scorched rice soup, and various cooked dishes, there's a lot to enjoy!

We got sweet potato fritters as a basic side dish! Thin and crispy — good to eat before the main meal haha

Brisket jjamppong, 13,900 won: really packed with brisket

Mayway's brisket jjamppong is genuinely loaded with brisket, and it has a strong smoky wok-hei flavor too, which added a lot of depth. There's plenty of brisket, mushrooms, onion, and bell pepper too, so the texture was great haha

Seriously, highly highly highly recommend the brisket jjamppong‼️‼️ This place is a jjamppong spot for sure~~~

Solo set meal, 12,900 won: jjajang, jjamppong and tangsuyuk on one tray

Next, the solo set meal came out quickly too. Getting to enjoy jjamppong and jjajang and tangsuyuk together!! The food came out clean and neatly plated, which was very satisfying.

After trying the jjajang here, ah,,,, I knew I'd have to come back for the stone-griddle jjajang. There was plenty of meat in the jjajang, so it was really delicious, and the sauce was thick and rich. They gave plenty of jjajang sauce too, so I mixed it into my rice!

Thick jjajang loaded with meat

The jjamppong broth was deep and rich, and the seasoning was just right. Overall what I liked about Mayway is that they don't skimp on ingredients — everything came generously portioned.

A bowl of rich jjamppong broth

The tangsuyuk uses fresh pork, so the meat was incredibly tender. The batter wasn't too thick either, and it was fried just right! Each bite was so soft and delicious it left an impression!

Once the meal was mostly done, they brought out dessert haha — cherry ice cream, perfect for cleansing the palate haha Ended things on a good note 👍👍👍

Is Mayway worth a visit? Final verdict

Final spread of the meal at Mayway

Mayway, a popular Cheomdan spot, was so delicious I really want to go back again. The brisket jjamppong was genuinely rich and packed with meat, so I highly recommend it. And the solo set meal is great since you get to enjoy three flavors haha. The staff were all so friendly too, so I left feeling great about the meal. If you're looking for Chinese food in Cheomdan, give Mayway a visit!
