Jinju restaurant for boneless agujjim (spicy angler fish): Jjimgoeul
In short
Jjimgoeul Main Branch is a 30-year-old agujjim (spicy braised angler fish) restaurant in an alley in downtown Jinju, across from the Jinju Youth Training Center. A regular since 2015 ordered the boneless agujjim at spice level 1 and liked the plump fish that needs no bone-picking and the crunchy bean sprouts. Jjimgoeul is worth remembering for a spicy Korean meal near Jinjuseong Fortress and the car-free street.

What I'm sharing today isn't some place I just discovered. I've actually been coming here since 2015. Wait, hold on... that means it's been over 10 years already?? There's no way I'm that old ^^ hahahaha
Anyway!! I went back to Jjimgoeul Main Branch, the place I visit whenever I'm craving agujjim (spicy braised angler fish) in downtown Jinju. While browsing Superchart I spotted Jjimgoeul on the list — wait, this place does Superchart too?! I was already a regular, and now I get perks on top of that ♥ This visit was sponsored through Superchart benefits (honestly my first time doing this ^^;;;), but I want to be upfront that I've been visiting on my own for a long time before this!!

Where is Jjimgoeul in downtown Jinju?

Jjimgoeul Main Branch has held its spot in downtown Jinju for a long time
The location is one of the reasons I keep coming back — it's right across from Jinju Youth Training Center, close to Jinjuseong Fortress, and just one block from Jinju's car-free street, so it's convenient to stop by for a meal after running errands downtown. The car-free street tends to bring pizza and burgers to mind! But when I want Korean food or something spicy in downtown Jinju, this is the place that naturally comes to mind.

Even this stone-walled alley already gives off old-school good-restaurant energy haha
Every time I come here I notice this isn't some big, flashy restaurant. But as soon as you turn into the alley, this small place has this strange aura of being a real find. How do I put it... it's totally different from the clean, sparkly vibe of newer restaurants — more like "I've been doing business here forever" energy haha. It really is a 30-year-old agujjim specialty restaurant, so I guess that feeling isn't unfounded.
A first visit to Jjimgoeul in 2015, brought along by my boss
I've been coming here since I was practically a young lady... Writing this post made me realize my first visit to Jjimgoeul was around 2015. Back then I was 4-5 years into my job, and my boss brought me along saying "the agujjim here is good," and that's how I tried it for the first time.
Who would've known back then that 10 years later I'd be taking photos of this place for a blog post haha. Come to think of it, Jjimgoeul actually holds some memories for me. I kept coming back whenever I craved agujjim downtown, so while this particular post is a Superchart visit, in my own book this place has already passed a 10-plus-year test ^^
Small but always full: why locals fill Jjimgoeul

Not a big place, but the tables keep filling up during meal times
Inside, it's not a huge, spacious restaurant. But every time I come, there are a lot of people. Dine-in customers keep coming in, and delivery orders keep coming in too. What's interesting is that despite all the customers, it doesn't feel chaotic — everything just moves incredibly fast haha.
Jjimgoeul's menu and spice levels 1 to 5

From boneless agujjim to agujjim to seafood jjim, pick whatever suits your taste
Check the photo for the menu :) We ordered the boneless agujjim that day, spice level 1! You can pick your spice level, so it works whether you can't handle spicy food or you love it. Even at level 1 I barely felt any heat — honestly milder than Shin Ramyun for me ^^
The staff at Jjimgoeul know exactly what they're doing
Watching the kitchen and floor staff move, you realize this isn't an old place for no reason
Eating that day, I noticed again — the chef, the ajumma staff, everyone had that expert aura haha. Side dishes go down — snap! Table setting — snap! Customer leaves — clear it, snap! New customer comes in — set it up, snap! Delivery orders coming in, dine-in customers coming in, food going out... they really move like machines haha.

The side dishes get set up in a flash too! It's that veteran teamwork thing, I guess? Nobody has to say much, and everyone's hands just move on their own. That's how table turnover stays fast even with a steady stream of customers. I think that's another kind of skill you only find at an old, established restaurant.
Why I now order only the boneless agujjim

Red sauce, piled high with bean sprouts — a look that makes you reach for rice on sight ♥
Here comes the boneless agujjim! Agujjim really needs to arrive on a big, heaping plate like this to feel satisfying just from the look of it ♥ The crunchy bean sprouts are evenly coated in spicy sauce, with plump chunks of angler fish tucked throughout. The biggest reason I love boneless agujjim: it's just easy.

Hahaha, agujjim is delicious, but picking meat off the bones can get a little tedious partway through, right? With boneless, there's none of that — just pick it up and eat, pick it up and eat. Ridiculously easy ♥

No bones to pick, just plump angler fish meat you can eat elegantly and neatly ^^
Take a bite of the tender fish meat together with the crunchy bean sprouts and — yeah, this is exactly why I keep coming back. The sauce is moderately spicy with good savory depth, the kind that keeps making you reach for more rice.

"I'll just eat a little rice with this," I told myself while eating agujjim... that's a plan you can attempt, at least. Spicy agujjim plus refreshing bean sprout soup is way too good ㅠㅠ There's no way that little-rice plan was going to hold. ^^

A piece of angler fish, a heap of bean sprouts, a spoonful of rice... impossible to resist
With agujjim, the sauce matters, but for me it's a letdown if the bean sprouts go mushy. Here, the bean sprouts kept their crunch, and eating them with the fish meat gave a nice crisp texture. Since it's boneless, it's easy to eat too — we'd be chatting away and then suddenly go quiet, chopsticks moving nonstop haha.
There's a reason Jjimgoeul has lasted 30 years

Not flashy, but the kind of place you keep coming back to for years — isn't that what a real neighborhood favorite is?
So many new restaurants keep popping up in Jinju these days. Plenty of them have sleek interiors and photogenic food. But personally, I have a real soft spot for places that have run in the same spot for years, the kind locals keep going back to. Jjimgoeul is exactly that kind of place.
I've personally confirmed at least 10 years of my own memory here, since I've been visiting since 2015 haha. Not counting this visit, I've already paid out of pocket to come here more than three times in 2026 alone!! I first came here as a rookie employee following my boss, and years later I find myself stopping by after my kids' academy classes nearby, and now I'm back again after spotting it on Superchart... Thinking about it, so much of my own timeline has quietly built up around this one restaurant. I almost got a little sentimental about the passing years while eating agujjim, but... as long as it's delicious, that's all that matters ^^ haha
Looking for agujjim near Jinjuseong Fortress in downtown Jinju
If you're craving agujjim or seafood jjim in downtown Jinju — especially if you're looking for restaurants near Jinjuseong Fortress, the car-free street, or the youth training center — Jjimgoeul Main Branch is worth remembering. Most of all, I'm not recommending this after one first visit; I've dropped by on and off for over 10 years, so I can vouch for the taste with confidence :)
Boneless agujjim is easy to eat and the spice level is adjustable to your taste, so it's great for family meals and for a hearty meal in downtown Jinju. And once you watch the staff move like clockwork, you'll think, "wow, this place has serious skill." There's always a reason a place lasts this long! I might just naturally end up here again next time I'm having lunch with the moms in downtown Jinju haha ^^
Parking for Jjimgoeul: Jinju Daecheop History Park underground lot
Not sure where to park?!

These days when I'm downtown in Jinju, I park at the Jinju Daecheop History Park parking lot. It offers a multi-child discount, and being underground makes it easy in both summer and winter. There's even a restroom in the parking lot for emergencies ^^ Highly recommend!!! Just cross the crosswalk in the photo and walk a little way down the alley to reach Jjimgoeul! If alley parking gives you trouble, I recommend the Jinju Daecheop History Park lot!
