Extra-spicy baby octopus pub in Sangbong, capsaicin and soju: Joajukne

Joajukne Jjukkumi (조아죽네쭈꾸미) is a baby octopus (jjukkumi) restaurant near Exit 3 of Sangbong Station on Line 7 in Jungnang, Seoul. Two spice-loving friends ordered 2 portions of Nunchi Jjukkumi at 17,900 won each, cranked up the heat with the restaurant's hot chili powder and capsaicin they brought along, and drank 3 bottles of soju with it. With plump baby octopus, plenty of cheese, adjustable spice, outdoor-style seating and a free dessert, Joajukne Jjukkumi is a solid pick for anyone after a fiery drinking snack in Sangbong.

Sindang Station Korean BBQ: ₩39,000 pork belly and skin set at Beolpan

Gogijip Beolpan Sindang branch is a pork belly and pork neck restaurant in Jung-gu, Seoul, between Sindang Station and Cheonggu Station, where the kitchen grills the meat for you. Three friends shared the ₩39,000 Beolpan set (pork belly for 2, pork neck for 2 and pork skin) with cheese egg custard and acorn kimchi noodles, and the thick pork skin, well-grilled pork belly and grilled kimchi stood out. Gogijip Beolpan Sindang branch is recommended for relaxed Korean BBQ over conversation with friends and for family dinners with kids.

Pizza shop near Uijeongbu Station: corn shrimp Pi-Chi Set, Mom's Touch

Mom's Touch Uijeongbu Haengbok-ro branch is a burger, chicken and pizza restaurant on the 2nd floor of the Olive Young building on Haengbok-ro in Uijeongbu. The writer took out a Pi-Chi Set (boneless) M with the Crispy Corn Whole Shrimp Pizza and Big Thigh boneless fried chicken. The reliable chicken was good, but the pizza, loaded with corn, shrimp and crunchy snack topping, turned out to be the unexpected star. For pizza at the price of one chicken, the Pi-Chi Set at Mom's Touch Uijeongbu Haengbok-ro branch is the answer.

Uijeongbu bakery: Dubai chocolate salt bread at a bus stop, Byway

Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch is a salt bread and dessert bakery on Cheongsa-ro 5beon-gil in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi. Craving Dubai chocolate salt bread, the writer stopped by around 5 pm for a Dubai chocolate salt bread (₩6,500), a fresh peach Wakppu salt bread (₩7,500) and a fig pistachio tart (₩5,800), and liked the Dubai chocolate salt bread so much it was eaten on the spot while waiting for the bus home after drinks. Byway Bakers handles pistachio well, but popular items sell out by afternoon, so go early or check stock on a delivery app.

Gamjatang date at Jeongwang Station with DIY fried rice: Cheongchun

Cheongchun Bulbbyeojjim & Gamjatang Jeongwang Station branch is a gamjatang (pork bone stew) and braised pork bone restaurant in front of Jeongwang Station exit 1 in Siheung, Gyeonggi, and it also serves braised pork bones and bone hangover soup as single-person menus. On a weekday the writer and her boyfriend had the full course at Cheongchun: a small gamjatang (29,000 won), steamed egg and self-serve fried rice, and loved the big meaty bones, the rich broth and the refillable chive side dish. For a hearty gamjatang or a hangover meal near Jeongwang Station, Cheongchun is well worth a visit.

Katsu restaurant in Yangju Okjeong: loin that isn't dry, Himawari

Himawari Yangju Okjeong Main Branch is a Japanese katsu restaurant in Okjeong-dong, Yangju, Gyeonggi, near the Okjeong central shopping district. On a weekday lunch date, recommended by a boyfriend who has lived in Okjeong for over 10 years, the writer ordered the sweet potato cheese katsu set and Himawari Assorted A with the crab croquette swapped for ebi katsu (fried shrimp), and fell for the freshly fried, crispy batter and tender loin katsu. Himawari broke the writer's belief that loin katsu is always dry, making it a strongly recommended katsu spot in Okjeong.

Grilled clam restaurant in Geobukseom after a hotel swim: Bada Super

Bada Super Haemul Cheonha Jogaegui, Geobukseom Oido Branch is a third-floor ocean-view grilled clam and seafood restaurant on Geobukseom in Siheung, Gyeonggi. On a Friday, the writer and her boyfriend swam at the nearby Le Collective hotel, walked over and ordered the small grilled clam set: a 3-tier tray of red scallops, pen shell, live abalone and nakji horyeongi (grilled octopus on a stick), with scallops topped with cheese and cheongyang chili by the owner himself. Bada Super Haemul Cheonha Jogaegui is a strong pick for Geobukseom and Oido visitors who want properly fresh clams instead of all-you-can-eat.

Indian restaurant in Ansan: creamy chicken masala Set B, Meno Ka Mena

Meno Ka Mena Ansan is an Indian restaurant on the 2nd floor of Dongseo Core, in front of Jungang Station (Line 4) in Ansan, Gyeonggi. The Meno Ka Mena Set B for two (₩34,000) came with salad, chicken tikka, chicken masala, garlic naan, rice and lassi. The chicken masala was marked with 3 chilies but was barely spicy, with a rich tomato and cream flavor. The writer, a curry lover, was so satisfied with Meno Ka Mena Ansan that they called the chicken masala their "life curry."

Gyeongju Western restaurant: bacon cream pasta & kkanpung cutlet

Midam Kitchen (미담키친) is a Western restaurant on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, serving salads, pasta, risotto, pizza and pork cutlet. On a 2-night, 3-day Gyeongju trip, two sisters ordered arugula tomato pizza (21,900 won), bacon cream pasta (15,900 won) and kkanpung pork cutlet (15,900 won, in a sweet-spicy garlic sauce). The portions were big but tasty enough to finish. With its thick, creamy bacon cream pasta and chewy-crust arugula pizza, Midam Kitchen was the most memorable Western meal of the trip.

Beef BBQ date in Ansan: galbisal, hanger steak, watermelon, Yangsimso

Yangsimso Ansan Gojan Branch is a Korean beef BBQ restaurant on Danggok-ro in Gojan-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan. On a food date with her boyfriend, the writer ordered two 150g servings of galbisal (beef rib finger meat), one 150g serving of tosisal (hanger steak) and mul naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles in broth), then received review-event sausages plus free chadolbagi (beef brisket) doenjang stew and watermelon. With good meat, side dishes, service and private rooms, Yangsimso Ansan Gojan Branch is recommended for both couple dates and group gatherings such as 70th birthday parties.

Garak Market fish shop, sashimi for 4 at Lone Tree: Yeongjae Susan

Yeongjae Susan (영재수산) is a fixed-price raw fish shop on the 1st floor of the Garak Mall Panmae-dong building in Songpa, Seoul. The writer and four friends took away the Jeon-Gwang-Cham medium set (shad, large flounder and large sea bream, ₩100,000) for a sashimi picnic at the Lone Tree (나홀로나무) in Olympic Park and loved the thick slices, generous flounder fins and shad with no fishy smell. Yeongjae Susan's Jeon-Gwang-Cham medium set was plenty for four people to share on a sashimi picnic.

Gyeongju restaurant, pub-style floor seats with my sister: Hwangnam

Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant Hwangnam Main Branch is a Korean restaurant on Hwangnidan-gil (Poseok-ro 1050beon-gil) in Gyeongju, known for its Cheomseongdae 7-dish set, stacked like the Cheomseongdae observatory, and its braised pork back ribs. The writer and her younger sister arrived at 6:30 pm on a weekday, waited about 20 minutes and ate the Cheomseongdae 7-dish set (43,000 won) and golden corn jeon (corn pancake, 9,900 won) at the outdoor-pub-style floor seats. To try yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), crab fried rice and flying fish roe perilla wraps in one go, the Cheomseongdae 7-dish set at Hwangnam Dukkebi Restaurant is the order to get.
