Coworker team lunch at a Sangam noodle restaurant: Sangam Hoegwan

In short

Sangam Hoegwan is a kongguksu (cold soy milk noodle soup) restaurant in the basement food court of Sangam IT Tower in Mapo, Seoul. Over a weekday team lunch, coworkers shared every item on the menu — signature kongguksu, pumpkin kongguksu, perilla oil mil-myeon (chewy wheat noodles), kimchi pancake and king dumplings — and the soy milk broth was as thick as cream soup with no beany or fishy smell at all. With 2 hours of free parking and roomy tables, Sangam Hoegwan is an easy Sangam lunch spot for a group that likes to share.

Tucked among the office towers of Sangam-dong, I finally visited Sangam Hoegwan, a proper local favorite that's won over the lunch crowds. It started as a small restaurant known for a single bowl of kongguksu (cold soy milk noodle soup), but it's now firmly established as a lunch destination in Sangam. Recently, it quietly moved from its old spot in Savoy City DMC to the basement 1F food court of Sangam IT Tower, just a 4-minute walk away. The move was meant to solve the long waits that used to happen in the old, cozier space — now you can eat comfortably in a roomier, more relaxed spot without the wait.

I happened to visit during lunch with several coworkers, so we went all in — signature kongguksu, pumpkin kongguksu, perilla oil mil-myeon, and of course kimchi pancake and king dumplings, tasting our way through the entire menu. Here's my honest, my-own-money review of a meal that had my mouth exploding with nuttiness — let's get into it!

What makes the broth: Gangwon-do contract-farmed soybeans 🌿

Sangam Hoegwan sticks firmly to a philosophy of making even a single menu item with depth and care. Instead of cheap store-bought soy powder, they carefully select fresh soybeans every morning, brew the broth with depth, and take great care through every step of boiling the noodles. The tidy atmosphere the moment you walk in, along with the pride in their Gangwon-do contract-farmed soybeans, gave me a strange sense of trust even before the food arrived.

Soy milk or cream? Signature kongguksu vs pumpkin kongguksu 🥣

Sangam Hoegwan doesn't treat kongguksu as just a seasonal item — they want it to deliver deep satisfaction as a clean, well-composed bowl of noodles. There's real care behind their hope that this becomes many people's precious memory of "the first time I truly enjoyed kongguksu."

  • Signature kongguksu: Living up to the title of Sangam's best kongguksu spot, when you scoop the broth with a spoon it falls thick and heavy, like cream soup. The moment you taste it, there's zero trace of the fishy smell soybeans can have — just deep, rich nuttiness filling your mouth. The chewy noodles cling perfectly to the dense soy milk, keeping the flavor perfect down to the very last strand.
  • A standout among standouts, the pumpkin kongguksu: The yellow-tinged pumpkin kongguksu is visually striking from the start. The mild, luxurious sweetness of pumpkin layered over the nutty soy milk base creates excellent balance without needing extra salt or sugar. Sweet and smooth, it's an irresistibly charming flavor.

How good is the perilla oil mil-myeon at Sangam Hoegwan? 🥢

A dish that got just as much praise from my coworkers as the kongguksu — the perilla oil mil-myeon. The moment it hits the table, a rich, fragrant perilla oil smell fills the air. On top of the springy, chewy wheat noodles sits a generous helping of nutty sesame, dried seaweed flakes, a special soy sauce, and plenty of quality perilla oil. Mix it up with your chopsticks and take a big slurp — the pleasant coating of nutty oil and savory saltiness is incredible.

Best sides to share: kimchi pancake and king dumplings 🥟🥞

Noodles alone felt like something was missing, so we ordered side dishes that made the table so much more abundant.

  • The ultimate in crispiness, kimchi pancake: You can feel the crispiness the moment you tear into it with chopsticks. It's loaded with well-fermented, tangy kimchi, and pairing it with the heavier kongguksu or mil-myeon completely refreshes your palate.

  • Packed-full king dumplings: These fist-sized dumplings have thin, chewy skins stuffed edge-to-edge with meat and vegetables. Bite in and warm juices flow out — alternating bites with cold kongguksu is a fantastic pairing.
