Why I ended up at Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch after claw machines in Hongdae
I'd stopped by an arcade in Hongdae to play some claw machines, and when I got hungry looking for a nearby place to eat, I ended up at Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch, which is hugely popular in Yeonnam-dong.
Tucked into one of Yeonnam-dong's charming, atmospheric alleys, Katsu Monster had a clear identity from the entrance. What caught my eye most of all was the outdoor seating out front.

What is the outdoor terrace at Katsu Monster like?
The outdoor terrace at Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch was really appealing — you get to escape the stuffy indoors and eat delicious food while a breeze drifts by. I felt my mood lift the moment I stepped in, soaking up Yeonnam-dong's free and relaxed atmosphere while eating. Tonkatsu eaten on the terrace on a nice day just feels special.
There were a lot of solo diners too.

What comes in the triple katsu set at Katsu Monster
The biggest advantage of Katsu Monster Yeonnam Main Branch is that you can try a variety of katsu all at once. No need to agonize over what to order — I went with the well-rounded set menu. This time I chose fillet katsu, loin katsu, cheese katsu, and cold soba.

Went with the triple katsu!

Plenty of table space
A hair tie, mouthwash, and even candy — pretty thoughtful touches, right?

Loin katsu vs fillet katsu vs cheese katsu: how they differ
Loin katsu
Let me introduce the loin katsu! Inside the crisply fried coating was a thick, savory cut of meat packed in tight. The more I chewed, the more the clean, nutty flavor of the loin itself spread through my mouth. Even though this cut can easily turn dry, it held just the right amount of juiciness — a textbook crispy-outside, tender-inside bite.

That flavor is perfect with a bit of wasabi on top

Fillet katsu
The fillet katsu was personally the cut that surprised me most. The moment I bit into it, the soft texture was outstanding. The juices burst out, and it felt like it just melted away in my mouth.
Cold soba
Sipping the cool, clean soba broth between bites of katsu kept my palate refreshed and clear. The noodles were nice and springy, and the broth's seasoning was just right — it paired fantastically with the tonkatsu.

The broth was so refreshing too

Cheese katsu
The cheese katsu was visually overwhelming, packed generously with savory cheese. When you lift a piece with your chopsticks, the cheese stretches out and its flavor pairs perfectly with the pork. It wasn't greasy at all — the savory richness was maximized, and I enjoyed it to the very last bite.

You can see the quality of the meat in each piece, right?

The meat was really packed with juice

The soba was really delicious too, and it's included in the set menu!
