Seonghwa Platter at Sutbul Seonghwa near Seokchon Station

What kind of place is Sutbul Seonghwa?

Sutbul Seonghwa (숯불성화) is a upscale beef grill right next to Seokchon Lake, in Jamsil's Songnidan-gil area. With private rooms and a spacious hall, it's a Korean BBQ spot near Seokchon Station and Seokchonhosu Station that suits group meals and dates.

Stone exterior and sign of Sutbul Seonghwa

One look at the dark stone exterior and the clean typographic sign tells you this is more than an ordinary BBQ joint. It's a premium dining space.

Inside, a calm, refined black-toned interior mixes with warm wood textures and pin lighting, so it feels like walking into a classy lounge.

Besides the spacious hall, there are private rooms where you can eat in peace, so you can pick the space that fits your gathering.

What's in the Seonghwa Platter 400g, and how much is it?

On the Sutbul Seonghwa menu, beef rib cuts run around ₩30,000. This day I ordered the Seonghwa Platter (성화모둠) at 400g, made up of 1% snowflake beef, cubed flower rib and wine-marinated rib fingers.

The Seonghwa Platter, the restaurant's signature set, combines 1% snowflake beef, cubed flower rib and wine-marinated rib fingers. At 400g, it's a good amount for 2–3 people once you add rice and dessert.

Banchan (side dishes)

Once you sit down, a neat spread is set on the table: myeongi namul (pickled wild greens), white kimchi, fresh minari (water dropwort) salad and other sides that bring out the flavor of the beef.

Among the white kimchi, minari salad, mu saengchae (seasoned shredded radish) and pa jeori (scallion salad) that lift the beef, the one that caught my eye was the radish. Shredded radish tossed in a sweet-spicy seasoning, it looked a vivid red on the black plate and really got my appetite going.

What does the cubed flower rib taste like?

Once the oak charcoal comes in, the staff grill the meat for you. The first cut I tried was the thick, cube-shaped cubed flower rib (깍뚝꽃갈비살).

Cubed flower rib cut into cubes

This is flower rib, regarded as the best part of the beef rib, aged and then cut into cubes. It's juicy and rich. Ordered on its own, it's ₩30,900 for 130g.

Grilled meat goes onto a palette-shaped individual plate, one per person, set neatly with salt, fresh wasabi, whole-grain mustard and more.

Rolled around over strong charcoal heat, it comes out crisp outside with the juices locked in. I loved the burst of juice with every bite and that chewy-yet-crunchy texture.

Sutbul Seonghwa's signature 1% snowflake beef

Next up was the 1% snowflake beef (1% 눈꽃살). I was told it's made only from the very best raw meat selected from prime-grade true rib.

The 1% snowflake beef is Sutbul Seonghwa's signature at ₩31,900 for 130g. Lightly cooked on the grill, it melts like snow the moment it hits your mouth, filling it with rich nuttiness.

Wine-marinated rib fingers and whole king oyster mushroom

Next came the wine-marinated rib fingers (와인양念늑간살), chewy rib-finger meat tossed on the spot in a special wine marinade. You can also order it on its own for ₩28,900 per 130g.

The marinade's savory sweetness is layered over the deep flavor of aged meat. I ate the rib fingers with rice, and it made the end of the meal feel properly satisfying.

The whole king oyster mushroom grilled over charcoal is another treat here. Bite in and you get charcoal aroma along with hot, rich juices bursting out. The texture is chewy, like good scallop.

Vacuum-packed and aged in the best condition

While looking around, what caught my eye was the dry-aging fridge glowing red at one side of the restaurant. You can see the hefty cuts of beef, vacuum-packed and aging in top condition, with your own eyes.

Finishing lunch: doenjang stew and sides

What neatly wrapped up all that hearty meat was the doenjang stew (된장찌개, ₩8,000), made with a broth blended from four kinds of fermented paste and loaded with hanwoo (Korean beef). Big chunks of tofu, assorted vegetables and plenty of meat make the broth deep and savory.

I came for lunch, and well-cooked white rice with that rich stew broth felt like the perfect full stop. For sides, you can also order things like snowflake beef spicy jjapaguri (noodles in black bean sauce) and spicy hanwoo hangover ramyeon.

Free ice cream for dessert

Sutbul Seonghwa serves ice cream as a free dessert. Order by headcount on the kiosk and staff bring it right over on a chilled plate.

Who is Sutbul Seonghwa good for?

A Seokchon Station BBQ spot where you can focus on atmosphere and the essence of the ingredients

"Quality meat becomes perfect when it meets refined fire, and charcoal-scented meat creates something special when paired with the right drink." That's the restaurant's own slogan. Since it's also a whisky specialist, you can enjoy well-marbled beef ribs with a wide range of drinks.

The name Seonghwa means "a sacred fire that burns without end," and you can reserve through Naver Map. With private rooms available, it's a Seokchon Lake BBQ spot I'd recommend for team dinners, blind dates and couples.
