Pyongyang naengmyeon lunch before a musical in Hongdae, Seoul: Anok

In short

Anok is a Pyongyang naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) and clear pork gomtang (broth soup) restaurant in Hongdae, Seoul, 365 meters from Exit 9 of Hongik University Station. Over lunch before a musical, a window seat at Anok looking out on a hanok came with Pyongyang naengmyeon (water-based) at 14,000 won, clear pork gomtang at 13,000 won and pork tail jjim (braised pork tail) at 29,000 won, the tail jjim about as spicy as Shin Ramyun. The interior is upscale and distinctly Korean, drawing plenty of foreign diners, and the naengmyeon was good enough to crave again.

Anok's hanok exterior and entrance

Came here for lunch before heading to a musical :) The interior is so pretty I found it right away haha

Entrance passageway into Anok

Even the entrance is gorgeous and the staff were so kind it put me in a good mood haha. The food was amazing too, but I think sitting with the hanok (traditional Korean house) view made the naengmyeon taste even better haha

Anok's Korean-style interior atmosphere

What is the atmosphere like at Anok?

Anok hasn't been open long, and overall the interior is upscale and distinctly Korean. There were a lot of foreign guests around, so it seems to be popular with them too.

What we ordered at Anok and what it cost

At Anok we ordered clear pork gomtang at ₩13,000 (large ₩17,000), Pyongyang naengmyeon (water) at ₩14,000, and pork tail jjim at ₩29,000. The clear pork gomtang is Anok's signature bowl, made with a clear, deep broth simmered in-house; the water naengmyeon is their own broth chilled down for a clean, light cold noodle dish; and the pork tail jjim is pork tail braised until tender with a chewy bite, or so they say.

With the hanok view in front of me, my eyes felt cleansed haha

A plate of spicy pork tail jjim at Anok

How spicy is Anok's pork tail jjim?

Anok's pork tail jjim (₩29,000) is about as spicy as Shin Ramyun. It was spicy but so delicious. I can't handle much spice, but I could eat this haha. It felt like it was packed with collagen too, which made it even better haha

Close-up of chewy pork tail jjim

The pork tail jjim was spicy and so tasty, and the chewy texture made it even better haha. I even took a video of it.

A bowl of Anok's clear pork gomtang

How were the clear pork gomtang and Pyongyang naengmyeon?

Anok's clear pork gomtang is ₩13,000, or ₩17,000 for the large. The broth was clear and clean, and it made for a satisfying meal on its own haha.

The Pyongyang naengmyeon (water) is ₩14,000. I love naengmyeon and eat it often, and this one was really good. I think I'll be craving it again. Recommended — if you're in the area, give it a try :)
