Hanwoo restaurant near Olympic Park with beef tartare: Sutbul Seonghwa

In short

Sutbul Seonghwa is an aged hanwoo (Korean beef) grill restaurant at the entrance of Songnidan-gil in Songpa, Seoul, right in front of the east side of Seokchon Lake. After an Olympic Park concert, the writer came with his girlfriend for the Seonghwa platter (1% snowflake beef and wine-marinated rib finger), beef tartare and hanwoo doenjang stew, finishing with an Excellent ice cream bar. Saved after seeing White House chef Andre Rush eat here, Sutbul Seonghwa turned out to be a memorable hanwoo splurge for a special day.

Why we booked a hanwoo restaurant on Songnidan-gil after an Olympic Park concert

This weekend I went to Olympic Park for a concert, and to make the day perfect with my girlfriend, I splurged a little and booked a hanwoo place. There was one restaurant in Jamsil I'd always told myself I had to try.

It's the spot I saved straight to my Naver Keep list after watching White House chef Andrew Rush enjoy it on YouTube! Every time I rewatched the video, the visuals of the beef grilling were so striking I always wanted to try it myself — and with an "if not today, when?" attitude, I finally made the trip. Today I'm introducing that place: Sutbul Seonghwa, on Songnidan-gil.

Sutbul Seonghwa location and parking: 100 m from Seokchon Lake, valet 3,000 won

Sutbul Seonghwa sits near Seokchon Lake in Jamsil, one of Seoul's most popular date spots, right in the middle of Songnidan-gil, the hotspot lined with restaurants and cafés.

The restaurant is at the very entrance of Songnidan-gil, right in front of Seokchon Lake. It's within 100m of the east lake — about a 1–2 minute walk — and about 500m from Seokchon Station, so it's not bad by public transit either.

It's even better if you drive — there's a valet-only parking area right next to the restaurant, plus a paid parking lot nearby. (Evenings 17:00–22:00: valet operates, ₩3,000)

Upscale, distinctive exterior of Sutbul Seonghwa

The exterior is upscale and distinctive enough to spot from a distance — a clearly different vibe from a typical BBQ joint, so it's easy to find even on your first visit.

CatchTable and Naver Reservations both work here, so if you're planning to visit on a weekend or in the evening, I'd recommend booking ahead.

"Is this really a barbecue place?" Inside Sutbul Seonghwa: aging showcase and private rooms

The interior made me think, "is this really a BBQ restaurant?" — it felt polished and well put together. The tables were spaced generously, giving the whole meal a relaxed, calm feel.

A showcase of beautifully aging hanwoo sits right in the center of the restaurant where guests can see it clearly, and being able to check the beef's condition with my own eyes naturally built trust in the quality.

The private room space also caught my eye — spacious inside with proper ventilation, it looked like a comfortable place to eat.

On Yam Korea, a channel I watch a lot, White House chef Andrew Rush visited this restaurant and enjoyed the hanwoo — he ate in this very private room space. If you're curious, it's worth a watch for reference.

Ordering, side-dish refills, and calling staff are all done through the kiosk at each table.

The menu offers a wide variety of hanwoo cuts, plus set menus that let you try several signature cuts at once, so it was great for sampling a range of parts. There's also a full lineup of whiskey, champagne, red wine, and liqueurs, available by the glass, so pairing drinks with each cut felt like fun without much pressure.

What side dishes and sauces come with the beef?

The quality showed even in the side dishes at Sutbul Seonghwa. There was a nice range of vegetables to pair with the beef — pickled onion, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), minari (water dropwort), sliced green onion, and mountain garlic leaves — plus a variety of sauces like shiitake wasabi, wasabi sauce, wholegrain mustard, Maldon salt, and plain salt, enough to suit different tastes and try out several combinations.

The Seonghwa platter: 1% snowflake beef and wine-marinated rib finger

This was the seonghwa platter we ordered — the restaurant's signature menu featuring the 1% snowflake beef and wine-marinated short rib.

The first thing we tried was the signature 1% snowflake beef! The name alone sounds special, and the taste lived up to it. The moment I bit in, savory juices spread through my mouth, followed naturally by a tender texture and rich flavor — it instantly made sense why this was the signature cut.

The variety of sauces made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Trying each one with the excellent meat felt like eating a new dish each time — even the same cut of beef took on a different character with each sauce.

The butter melted inside a large mushroom was a great side to eat alongside the meat. As it sizzled, the mushroom juice mixed with the butter for a savory, almost wholesome flavor.

Beef tartare, hanwoo doenjang stew, and an Excellent ice cream finish

We liked the meat quality so much we also ordered beef tartare (yukhoe) — it was fresh and clean with no gamey smell, letting the tender texture and hanwoo's signature savory flavor really come through.

We also ordered the stew you feel you shouldn't skip when eating BBQ — hanwoo doenjang (soybean paste) stew. With generous ingredients and a deeply steeped doenjang broth, it paired well with the meat.

For dessert, we had the familiar but always welcome Excellent ice cream! It cleanly wrapped up the lingering richness of the hanwoo while ending the meal on a light, pleasant note.

Who should eat at Sutbul Seonghwa?

  • Anyone who prefers sampling several cuts of hanwoo at once
  • Anyone wanting to properly flex on hanwoo for a special occasion
  • Meat lovers who love the distinct flavor of charcoal-grilled hanwoo
