Pork belly BBQ after leg day in Beomeo-dong, Daegu: Matdongsam

In short

Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch (맛동삼 범어본점) is a newly opened pork belly BBQ restaurant in a converted house in Beomeo-dong, Suseong, Daegu. After a leg workout, two of us ate 3 servings of premium skin-on pork belly (₩11,000 per 120g) and 1 serving of gabrisal (pork jowl-cut, ₩11,500 per 120g), and the best part was grilling the stir-fried kimchi we had seen on Instagram Reels together with the meat. With plenty of sauces, free stir-fried kimchi and an annex room, Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch is a Beomeo-dong BBQ spot worth recommending for group dinners.

Why I went to Matdongsam Beomeo, a new BBQ place in Beomeo-dong

Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch (맛동삼 범어본점) is a new pork belly BBQ restaurant in Beomeo-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu. I heard a new BBQ place had opened in Suseong, so right after a brutal leg workout I went to refuel on protein 🤎

Where do you park at Matdongsam Beomeo?

There's room for about 2 cars in front of the restaurant. When I got there it was already taken, so I went to the parking lot listed on Naver (34 Dongdaegu-ro 80-gil, Suseong-gu, down a narrow lane next to the Girl Scouts Federation). The way in is narrow and the lot itself is kind of tricky to park in, so please drive carefully . . 🚕

A BBQ restaurant in a converted house: exterior and interior

Matdongsam Beomeo is a converted house, so it has a different vibe from a typical BBQ restaurant.

The exterior is so house-like that even the entrance felt like someone's home rather than a BBQ place 🖤

Annex space at Matdongsam Beomeo, good for gatherings

Probably because it's a converted house, the inside is split into several spaces. There are several 4-person tables, and a separate annex room too, so it looks good for family gatherings or group get-togethers (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)♥

  • The restroom is outside the restaurant (separate for men and women)

Matdongsam Beomeo menu and prices

You can check the menu comfortably from your seat on the kiosk on the table. Besides meats like pork belly, gabrisal (pork collar) and jjondeuksal (chewy pork cut), there's a good range of meal dishes too, such as doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles) and gyeran-jjim (steamed egg).

The kiosk also has detailed instructions on how to grill and eat the meat well, so even first-timers should be able to follow along easily. There's a receipt review event going on too, so definitely join in if you visit 🤍

Table setting: the sauces and stir-fried kimchi

Beyond the basic ssamjang (seasoned dipping paste), Matdongsam Beomeo serves a variety of sauces: roasted salt, barley ssamjang, herring roe, wasabi and more. I really love BBQ places that give you lots of sauces... so that's a pass from me right away ★

And one of the reasons I came here . . the stir-fried kimchi. I saw a Reel of people grilling it with the meat and it looked SO good 😭 so I came to try that combo ^____^

How did we grill the premium pork belly?

Just look at the color on these 3 servings of pork belly . . . !! The quality looks really good, doesn't it ♥ I snapped my photo in a hurry and put it straight on the grill.

3 servings of premium pork belly on the grill

At first I grilled only the pork belly, and once some fat rendered out I put mushrooms, potatoes and kimchi underneath the meat.

Juicy pork belly 😭😭😭😭

Roasted salt and garlic sauce: how did they taste?

For my first bite I dipped it in the roasted salt as the restaurant recommends, and wow, unlike regular coarse salt it's nuttier and brings out more of the meat's flavor ლ(╹◡╹ლ) Then I tried the garlic sauce, Matdongsam's signature, and wow wow, the garlic hits you, with a slightly spicy-sweet taste that any Korean would love 😭

I'm normally a ssamjang person, but at Matdongsam Beomeo I mostly dipped in the salt and the garlic sauce ...♥

Stir-fried kimchi grilled with the pork belly is the kicker

I wrapped up some ssam (lettuce wraps) too, and the stir-fried kimchi grilled together with the pork belly is seriously the kicker...! Please, please.... try the meat and kimchi together.... You can also order the stir-fried kimchi on the kiosk with no extra charge, which made it even better (╹ڡ╹ ) Beomeo-dong, Suseong-gu BBQ spot: approved . .

Extra orders for two: gabrisal and Grandma's Doenjang Stew

My boyfriend and I came as a pair, and there's no way we'd stop at just 3 servings, so we added 1 serving of gabrisal (120g, ₩11,500), Grandma's Doenjang Stew (halmae doenjang jjigae, from the review event ♥) and black rice (₩1,000)~~~~

1 extra serving of gabrisal

Gabrisal, ta-da-

Gabrisal grilled on the grill

Before grilling -> after grilling ,,ԾㅂԾ,, Gabrisal is leaner and milder than pork belly, and I loved how chewy it gets the more you bite 🤎

Grandma's Doenjang Stew with rustic tofu and black rice

The Grandma's Doenjang Stew from the review event was packed with big chunks of rustic tofu, so it was totally generous. The broth wasn't harsh either, just clean, savory and comforting, which went well with the meat haha. Maybe because it came with black rice instead of white rice, it felt like having a warm meal at grandma's house ♥

Finishing the meal at Matdongsam Beomeo

Before leaving I stopped by the restroom, and they even have mouthwash, so I could finish the meal feeling fresh 😀

Verdict: is Matdongsam Beomeo worth recommending?

I visited because I heard a new BBQ place had opened in Beomeo-dong, and the meat was delicious, and the grilled stir-fried kimchi combo too,,b The converted-house setting gives it a different atmosphere, and with the annex it seems great for gatherings! If you're looking for BBQ in Beomeo-dong, I highly recommend Matdongsam Beomeo Main Branch 🤍
