Today I visited Haenyeo Sotbap Suseong Direct Store, which is having a moment right now! From ttukbaegi (hot pot) loaded with abalone and seafood to bulgogi sotbap with that smoky charred flavor — the menu is so varied that I thought it'd be a great spot for a family meal too. :)

The 13-side-dish table setting and butter-grilled abalone

Seasonal healthy 13-side-dish table setting. The basic table setting was so satisfying, and every single side dish was delicious! Except for the shiitake tangsuyuk and grilled Spanish mackerel, everything can be refilled continuously! The butter-grilled abalone was ordered separately! :)

Even the stir-fried anchovies seemed lightly fried, tasting like a snack, so my hand kept reaching for more. The butter-grilled abalone (2 pieces) came with a butter roe sauce for dipping! Abalone can get tough if it's cooked wrong, but this was so tender that even my kid ate it well. The sauce was so savory that we dipped the abalone in it and licked the plate clean!

Abalone seafood ttukbaegi: enough for two to share

One of the dishes we ordered was the abalone seafood ttukbaegi. Inside a big earthenware pot, seafood is piled generously, plus abalone on top! It looked hearty just to see. It seemed like plenty of food even for two people to share!

With minari (water dropwort) aroma added, the warm and spicy broth blended with the seafood, and the rice just went down naturally! The seafood was fresh and generous in amount, so we ate very satisfyingly!! Highly recommend!!

Unyang-style bulgogi sotbap, an easy dish to share with kids

And the other dish we ordered was the Unyang-style bulgogi sotbap. I ordered it to eat with my kid, and since it's a bulgogi and sotbap combo with a gentle smoky flavor to the bulgogi paired with the warm sotbap (hot pot rice), my kid ate it so well!! (Even though she'd already filled up on the shiitake tangsuyuk, she still ate the sotbap well!)

My kid said, 'I've never been to such a delicious restaurant before?'...

(I've fed her bulgogi so much it's basically her soul food, so hearing her say this for the first time was something haha) A whole bowl of rice disappeared in no time, haha.

And usually bulgogi is quite sweet, but this one wasn't too heavily seasoned, so wrapping it in seaweed with the sauce on top made the flavor combination amazing! And it comes with seaweed soup too, one with an abalone aroma, which paired well with the sotbap. If you're going with kids, I highly, highly recommend it!!

Finishing the sotbap with nurungji (scorched rice)

What I like when eating sotbap is the nurungji (scorched rice) at the end. After scooping out most of the rice, you pour in hot water and it finishes the meal off cleanly. Being able to eat warm from start to finish — I think that's really the charm of sotbap.

Right next to the register there's coffee and slushies ready, so we could wrap up dessert cleanly too.
