Daemyeong-dong chicken BBQ with rice paper wraps: Hyeongnim Dakgui
In short
Hyeongnim Dakgui Daemyeong-dong Gyeongdae branch is a charcoal-grilled chicken BBQ restaurant in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu. Craving the taste from a summer visit, the writer returned in autumn for a three-flavor platter of salt-grilled, marinated and soy sauce chicken. The writer wrapped the chicken in rice paper from the self-bar, which launched that very day, and ended up ordering more meat. With a kids' playroom, private rooms, group seating and an easy parking tip, Hyeongnim Dakgui is a good pick for a Daemyeong-dong work dinner or family meal.

I couldn't forget the taste of the chicken BBQ I first tried at Hyeongnim Dakgui (형님닭구이) last summer, so I went back in autumn! The moment I smelled that savory aroma of chicken sizzling over charcoal again, I thought, yep, glad I came.

Hyeongnim Dakgui Daemyeong-dong Gyeongdae branch already has a great reputation among people in Daemyeong-dong looking for a group dinner spot where you can comfortably have a drink late into the night. I'll tell you all about my visit, including the owner's generosity and the amazing match with the newly introduced rice paper wraps!
Where to park at Hyeongnim Dakgui Daemyeong-dong Gyeongdae branch

If you're driving, the most accurate way is to search 'Daemyeong Campus Parking Lot 5' in KakaoNavi! First-timers might get a little lost. I circled around looking for the parking lot entrance a few times myself, haha.
Even after parking, the Hyeongnim Dakgui sign doesn't jump out at you. If you look carefully left and right, you'll spot a big vertical sign and an entrance with the restaurant's name. Go down the stairs there and a spacious, comfortable restaurant appears!
Is Hyeongnim Dakgui big enough for a group dinner in Daemyeong-dong?
Once you step inside, you'll be surprised at how big Hyeongnim Dakgui is. There's also a well-equipped playroom where kids can run around freely, so it's perfect for a family meal too!

With private rooms and two large group seating areas, I think Hyeongnim Dakgui is truly the answer for anyone looking for a group dinner spot near Keimyung University, haha.

If there were a place like this near my office, I'd be begging for a team dinner every week, T_T
Hyeongnim Dakgui menu and daily events

For the chicken BBQ, you can choose to taste from the basic salt-grilled to spicy marinated and soy sauce, and you can order by the half platter too! The menu is so well put together that picking is genuinely hard.

I thought the daily events were especially awesome! The free item changes each day, like yukhoe mulhoe (raw beef cold soup) on Monday and beer on Tuesday, so it's worth checking before you visit, right? haha

Hyeongnim Dakgui is a chicken BBQ specialist, but they also have pork ribs, frozen pork belly and grilled makchang (beef intestines). It's a great place for a group dinner when it's hard to please everyone's tastes!
How does the three-flavor chicken BBQ platter taste?

This time I first ordered one platter mixing all three flavors. The kitchen partly cooks it beforehand, so you just add a touch of charcoal aroma, and the short wait was great! The rice cakes and onions that come with it are a treat too when grilled together on the grill, haha.

When you pick up a well-cooked piece and dip it deep into the special spicy sauce, the juices burst in your mouth! The meat itself is so fresh and tender that the savory flavor builds as you chew. It really made the autumn return after a summer visit feel worth it.

Even wrapped in lettuce or perilla leaf with a bit of garlic and pickles, it never got old and kept going down! The mild flavor of chicken and the charcoal aroma blend together, and I couldn't put my chopsticks down.
Does chicken BBQ go well in rice paper wraps?

On one side of Hyeongnim Dakgui is a self-bar called 'Mom's Cooking Zone' (엄마손맛 존). You can help yourself to all kinds of side dishes like at a buffet, and the variety is really huge!

The owner recommended the rice paper wraps, saying they were opening them for the first time that day. At first I wondered, "Will chicken BBQ really go well in rice paper wraps?" so I was half doubtful and only took a few ingredients. There was no peanut butter sauce either, so I worried it'd taste bland.

But the moment I took a bite, I nearly flipped, it was so good! haha The tangy sauce cut right through the chicken's richness and combined with the crunch of the vegetables, a whole new world. In the end I even ordered more meat just to make more wraps!
The dessert corner and the owner's volunteer work

After a hearty meal at Hyeongnim Dakgui, a dessert corner awaits. Cool, smooth soft-serve ice cream plus a cup of coffee felt like finishing a perfect course meal!
The owner was so kind throughout the meal that I felt great, and it turns out they also invite elderly people who live alone for free meals as volunteer work. Let's go give them our business, everyone~!! hehe I really hope a kind-hearted place like this gets lots of customers and does great!
I hope you enjoy a good meal too at Hyeongnim Dakgui, where you can feel the owner's good influence as well as the great food!
