Dalseo Korean restaurant steamed seafood: Sin Yeongung

In short

Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch is a Korean restaurant opposite Moda Outlet in Dalseo, Daegu. I tried the medium, regular-spicy steamed seafood and cheonggukjang seafood ttukbaegi; the octopus was tender, the portions were generous, and the broth was clean and refreshing.

At Sin Yeongung Cheonggukjang Haemulttukbaegi Seongseo Moda Outlet branch (신영웅청국장해물뚝배기 성서모다아울렛점), right opposite Daegu Moda Outlet, I had steamed seafood and cheonggukjang seafood ttukbaegi. The generous portion and tender octopus in the steamed seafood stood out, while I remembered the ttukbaegi for its clean broth.

Is there space for a group meal?

The interior was spacious and tidy. There were many diners by the windows during my visit, so I could not photograph those seats.

There were also two private rooms. Since they were separated from the other seating, I thought they would work well for a group dinner or gathering.

What did I order, and what were the side dishes like?

I ordered the signature cheonggukjang seafood ttukbaegi (fermented soybean stew in an earthenware pot) and a medium steamed seafood dish. I chose the steamed seafood after reading other reviews that praised its seasoning. The menu also had pork cutlet, which I thought could be an option for companions who do not like seafood. I was curious about haemul hanpan boiling, an American-style seafood boil that other diners were having, but did not order it this time.

The banchan (side dishes) arrived first. The salad dressing was tangy and made for a nice palate cleanser.

Side dishes and self-service bar

I could get more of any side dishes I wanted from the self-service bar. It was kept tidy as well.

What does the cheonggukjang seafood ttukbaegi taste like?

The cheonggukjang seafood ttukbaegi arrived first. It was bubbling in the earthenware pot and gave off the rich aroma of cheonggukjang. It was my first time having seafood in cheonggukjang, but it reminded me of doenjang-jjigae, so it suited my taste better than I expected.

It included several kinds of seafood, including scallops, fish, blue crab, abalone, and mussels. The seafood looked substantial and fresh.

Rather than thick, the broth was clean and tasted refreshing, perhaps because of the seafood. I kept spooning up the broth along with its savory aroma.

How much food is in the medium steamed seafood, and how spicy is regular?

The steamed seafood arrived while I was eating the cheonggukjang. I was surprised by how much there was despite it being a medium. To me, it looked like a generous amount for three women, and I wondered whether we would have room for fried rice afterward.

The octopus and squid were cut into easy-to-eat pieces, which was convenient. There was a wide variety: scallops, mussels, blue crab, shrimp, octopus, squid, goni (fish milt), and roe.

The octopus legs in particular were plump yet tender. My grandmother, who does not like chewy food, also said they were tender and ate them well.

There were plenty of scallops, mussels, fish milt, and roe too, which made it enjoyable to pick through. I ordered regular spice, and it felt about as spicy as Shin Ramyun to me. Even though I do not handle spicy food particularly well, I found it manageable, and I especially liked the seasoning.
