Heard there was a place doing mala kaoyu in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon, so I went to check it out!
Bantiannyao Kaoyu is the only hotpot restaurant in Daejeon combining fish dishes with hotpot!

Where is Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon, and is there parking?
The entrance to Bantiannyao Kaoyu! It's located right behind Daejeon Gallery. Just head into the Gong Cha building! There's a dedicated parking lot behind the store.

Once you're in the building, take the elevator or stairs up to the 2nd floor.

Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon opening hours
Head up to the 2nd floor and the entrance to Bantiannyao Kaoyu is right there. It opens at 11 AM and closes at 10:30 PM daily. No break time and no regular closed days, so it was nice being able to drop in whenever within operating hours.

Inside Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon: interior and seating
Inside Bantiannyao Kaoyu! The interior was way bigger than expected. Since it's fairly new, the space felt clean and fresh.

There were group seats for larger parties as well as tables for two. Good for both a couple's visit and a bigger gathering!

The self-bar costs 2,000 won per person
The self-bar at Bantiannyao Kaoyu. Paying ₩2,000 per person gets you unlimited access. First up, the spot where you can get rice.

To the side there were various sauces. There was even soda and ice cream freely available!

What we ordered at Bantiannyao Kaoyu Daejeon
The Bantiannyao Kaoyu menu! We went with the signature mala kaoyu, plus fresh shrimp shahua and egg fried rice as add-ons.

Mala kaoyu with ningbo fish, ordered less spicy
When the whole fish arrived in a big square hotpot with a shallow, red mala broth, the visual was insane. Once it started simmering, the tingly, numbing mala aroma smelled like it was going to be amazing. I went with less spicy, ningbo fish!

Picking apart the big, broth-soaked fish flesh, it was way more tender than I expected. The numbing mala seasoning had soaked deep between the flakes, and the combo with the savory fish oil on every bite was so good. The bones came off easier than expected too, and it was the softest steamed fish I've had, with just the right seasoning — I kept shouting 'this is so good!' while eating.

Fresh shrimp shahua (shrimp paste balls)
Fresh shrimp shahua, springy minced shrimp paste served with fried tofu skin!

With the disposable gloves provided, we opened up the tofu skin and neatly stuffed in the shrimp paste.

We dropped them into the mala kaoyu and cooked them through before eating. The firm yet springy shrimp texture went so well with the mala!! Everyone should definitely add this one. The more you chew, the more that sweet, savory shrimp juice comes out and naturally tones down the mala's spiciness. Thanks to a springiness on a whole different level from regular fish balls, it paired perfectly with the kaoyu broth.

Egg fried rice with the mala kaoyu broth
We ordered egg fried rice alongside to tame the mala heat, and it came out light and neatly fried.

The rice grains stayed fluffy and separate! Not overly seasoned, just clean and light, making it the perfect base for piling on the tingly kaoyu fish. It was also great with a few spoonfuls of the shallow mala broth mixed in! An essential dish for wrapping up the meal cleanly.

Is one kaoyu enough for two, and how the revisit coupon works?
Finished it all! I was worried it might be too much for two, but it was so delicious we managed to eat until we were completely full. Adding a vegetable side would probably be plenty for three people too!

The Bantiannyao Kaoyu coupon we got on our way out after paying! Even as first-time visitors, they give a 5% discount for the next visit. And 30% on the third visit!! Such a great deal. I definitely want to come back to Bantiannyao Kaoyu! A great spot for anyone who loves mala and hotpot!
