Stroller-friendly 13-side sotbap set in Gyeongsan: Haenyeo Sotbap

A while back I needed a place to eat with my parents, so while looking around I ended up at Haenyeo Sotbap Gyeongsan. There's a Haenyeo Sotbap Susung branch near my place, but I'd heard the parking lot is always packed and there's often a wait, so I'd been curious about this one. I found out the original location is in Gyeongsan, so on the way back from a day out with the baby in Gyeongsan, we stopped by. What is the dining room and table spacing like?

Once inside, the restaurant turned out to be quite spacious. At a lot of restaurants these days the tables are packed so close together that you can hear the whole conversation at the next one, which can feel a bit chaotic — but here the tables had decent spacing and the spaces felt nicely separated. The whole place had a wood-toned interior, clean but with a slightly upscale feel, which made me think it would work well for bringing my parents along.

The exterior was also nicely landscaped in an upscale way, so it looked like a good spot for gatherings or even a meeting-the-in-laws type occasion.

Annex rooms and how the waiting system works

In the annex there were also private rooms. Some groups were having a gathering in one of the annex rooms, and since the space was completely separated from the main hall, it looked great for talking. It seemed like a fine spot even for a formal meeting like meeting the in-laws. When we arrived there was a waiting machine and a separate waiting room set up. I heard there's often a wait on weekends, but since we visited on a Monday evening, we were able to eat right away without a reservation.

Is there room for a stroller with a 5-month-old baby?

We ate in the main hall, which also had plenty of space, so even with the baby it wasn't too uncomfortable. We had our 5-month-old with us, and the staff were considerate — they moved us from the table we were first shown to one that was easier to fit the stroller at.

We'd already been worrying about whether we were blocking other guests' path, so it was such a relief when the staff offered to switch our seat before we even asked. On top of that, they kept fussing over the baby warmly the whole time, which made my parents happy too. Going to a restaurant with a baby can sometimes come with a bit of self-consciousness, but that day we were able to eat comfortably without any of that pressure.

We ordered two dishes that day: Wando abalone sotbap and Jeju green tea eel sotbap. There were so many kinds of sotbap that it was hard to choose, but since we were eating with my parents, we went with abalone and eel.

Once the food came out, the whole spread was more generous than I expected. The side dishes that came with it were especially clean-tasting, which I appreciated. At Korean set-meal restaurants the main dish matters, but I'm often disappointed if the sides are too salty or too intense — here everything was mild and clean overall, and my parents tried each side dish one by one and said they were good.

With 13 side dishes on the table, just trying one bite of each would practically finish a bowl of rice haha.

The real charm of sotbap is the nurungji (scorched rice)! You scoop out the rice first, then pour water into the leftover pot — the crisped rice left behind was nutty and delicious.

What I was really curious about was the eel sotbap. This was my first time having eel in a sotbap, and the seasoning wasn't too strong, so it wasn't overwhelming to eat alongside the side dishes — just the right balance. If you like eel, this is a dish you'd enjoy. Where the abalone sotbap was mild and nutty, the eel sotbap had that distinct eel richness, so I was glad we ordered both. If you're visiting with a group, ordering different sotbap dishes to share sounds like a good idea too.

Eating here with my parents, what struck me was that the food wasn't too intense and the range of side dishes made it a comfortable place for older guests. Above all, the restaurant's clean atmosphere and roomy seating meant we weren't uncomfortable at any point during the meal.

When you're bringing both your parents and a baby along, like we were, you can't just pick a restaurant based on the food alone. You need room for the stroller, and a space that's too tight feels stressful if the baby moves around even a little. We even brought the baby along, and the staff switched our seat to fit the stroller and doted on the baby, which made the meal that much more comfortable. Best of all, my parents said the food was clean and were satisfied, which made me quietly proud haha.
