Eel pot rice dinner date at a Gyeongsan restaurant: Haenyeo Sotbap

It's been a while since I came out to Gyeongsan for fun. I drove down myself, but traffic was rough and it took a whole four and a half hours. I gripped my hungry stomach and pushed the accelerator the rest of the way.

So for dinner, I made a same-day reservation at Haenyeo Sotbap Gyeongsan, a well-known Korean set-meal restaurant in Gyeongsan. My boyfriend and I actually visited here a few months ago on our own dime, and the food was clean and really good.

Is parking easy at Haenyeo Sotbap Gyeongsan?

Haenyeo Sotbap Gyeongsan has really generous parking, so bringing a car shouldn't be a problem at all. Since the location isn't the easiest to reach by public transit, almost everyone drives here. That makes parking essential — and apparently if the lot in front of the restaurant fills up, there's a second lot behind the building you can use.

Waiting room and why reservations are a must

On the way to the front door, there's a separate building set up as a waiting room. If you come right at lunch or dinner rush, it gets really busy. There can be a wait, so I'd recommend reserving ahead.

It also looked great for group gatherings. Apparently people come here a lot for dol (first birthday) parties and sangyeonrye (formal meetings between families before a wedding) in Gyeongsan too.

We visited at 7pm and the tables were nearly full. If we hadn't reserved, we probably would've had to wait. I really loved the traditionally Korean interior. It's a great Gyeongsan Korean restaurant for a comfortable, healthy meal.

One of my criteria when choosing a restaurant is whether the bathroom is clean, and this place's bathroom was spotless — I loved that.

Partitioned tables: why it suits a date

We sat at a table near the front. Each table is separated by a partition, so even though it's an open space, you can still enjoy a private meal. I really liked that.

Ordering two bowls of eel sotbap

The menu at the famous Gyeongsan Korean restaurant Haenyeo Sotbap Gyeongsan. The eel rice bowl is their standout dish here, so we ordered two eel sotbap without hesitation.

They also provide aprons, so if you're wearing something light-colored, it's worth grabbing one.

The banchan spread, mushroom sweet-and-sour pork and grilled mackerel

A neat, orderly spread of banchan (side dishes) arrived. Each side dish was really fresh — you could tell they used good ingredients.

Mushroom sweet and sour pork and grilled mackerel came out as tasting portions, one small plate each, and they were genuinely healthy and delicious. If you like them, apparently you can order them separately as full dishes.

Opening the eel sotbap and making nurungji

My boyfriend and I were chatting away, and before long the sotbap arrived. When I was young I never understood why grown-ups loved sotbap so much, but as I get older it just tastes better and better 🥹 I even make it at home now, haha...

Opening it up 🩵 The steam rising the moment you lift the lid off a sotbap is the best part.

The second the lid came off, it looked so good I grabbed my spoon right away hahaha. When we visited a few months ago and ordered the eel sotbap on our own dime, it was really delicious too, so I ordered the same thing again this time. We moved the contents into the rice bowls that came with it, and—

pouring hot water into the pot lets you enjoy delicious nurungji (scorched rice tea) afterward too.

Oh, and the miyeokguk (seaweed soup) that came with it was full of savory flavor too — really delicious. My boyfriend loves instant food, so on dates I try to make sure we eat healthy whenever we can, and visiting Haenyeo Sotbap Gyeongsan, the famous Korean set-meal restaurant in Gyeongsan, gave us a genuinely healthy meal.
