Smoke-free Seoul Korean BBQ hall with a self-serve bar: Yanggyegok

In short

Yanggyegok is a charcoal dakgalbi (grilled chicken) restaurant two minutes on foot from Exit 4 of Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Scouting Yanggyegok as a venue for a team dinner, the writer ordered all three charcoal dakgalbi flavors — salt 15,000 won, soy sauce 16,000 won and gochujang 16,000 won — plus chicken noodle soup at 10,000 won, and found high ceilings, strong ventilation, no choking smoke and no greasy floor. Easy subway access and 2 hours of free parking made Yanggyegok a pass for group dinners.

Today I went to scout out Yanggyegok, a Yangjae Station restaurant that could work as a group dinner spot near my dad's office~ The main dish we tried was charcoal dakgalbi (grilled marinated chicken)! It was super tender and delicious, great quality, plus the atmosphere was clean and pleasant and parking was available, so it passed as a group dinner venue! Let me post about it in detail~

Yanggyegok, the Yangjae Station restaurant I visited today, is on the first floor of a building right at a big intersection near the subway station, so it's easy to spot and easy to get to! Also, since it's a restaurant with free parking, it's convenient for nearby office workers to drive over for lunch, dinner, or group dinners~

Is the Yanggyegok dining hall smoky enough to matter for a group dinner?

Yanggyegok's exterior and interior are both decorated with a vintage mood, and the atmosphere is comfortable~ In particular, the high ceilings made it feel even more pleasant, and the ventilation system seemed well set up, so there was no choking smoke—it stayed clean the whole time!

Group-friendly tables in Yanggyegok's dining hall

When picking a group dinner spot, especially at a grill house, I really care about smoke and greasiness! Not only was there no smoke, but the floor wasn't slippery and there was no greasy residue either, so I was pleased~

That clean, pleasant feel was also obvious at the self-serve bar full of side dishes~ The side dishes were laid out neatly and generously portioned—totally my style! On top of that, the perilla leaves, peppers, and garlic were fresh, and the kimchi was crunchy with a bit of a spicy kick, which was delicious~

What's on the Yanggyegok menu?

The menu at Yanggyegok, the Yangjae Station restaurant! As a charcoal dakgalbi specialist, grilled dishes are the main event, but there are also plenty of hearty meal options like dak-hanmari (whole chicken soup) and dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken)~ I saw other tables ordering these meal dishes and now I want to try dak-hanmari or dakdoritang next time! They looked so tempting.

Salt vs soy sauce vs gochujang: comparing Yanggyegok's three charcoal dakgalbi flavors

First, I ordered a variety of the charcoal dakgalbi dishes I had in mind for the group dinner~ There are three types—salt, soy sauce, and gochujang—and they come pre-grilled once, which made things easier! Not only easy, but the presentation was even more appetizing, right?

Dakgalbi plated with mushrooms and shishito peppers

It was plated nicely with mushrooms and shishito peppers, building anticipation before even eating! First, I started grilling the basic salt version (₩15,000) to a golden brown over the charcoal~ The staff helped with the tricky parts like handling the bones while grilling, which made it much easier!

Finished salt charcoal dakgalbi

The golden-grilled salt version (₩15,000) is savory and packed with charcoal aroma~ It's delicious even without any pairing! But personally, I loved pairing it with the pickled gochujang side dish—the tanginess really hit the spot for me~

Sweet soy sauce charcoal dakgalbi

The soy sauce version (₩16,000) has a slightly sweet flavor baked in, so it's the kind of taste that everyone—men, women, young, old—can enjoy, and it was moist too, which I liked! While the salt version is clean, savory, and crispy-outside-tender-inside, the soy sauce version has a bit more seasoning that makes your mouth happier, plus extra softness~

Gochujang-seasoned charcoal dakgalbi
Gochujang dakgalbi wrapped in a perilla leaf

The gochujang version (₩16,000) is a bit more seasoned, but not too strongly seasoned! It's not spicy or salty, so it's tasty eaten plain, and even better wrapped in a perilla leaf~ Following the restaurant's recommended way of eating it—perilla leaf + pickled radish + flying fish roe + special sauce combo—I kept making wrap after wrap endlessly!

Four special sauces at Yanggyegok

The four house-made dipping sauces

On top of that, there are four special sauces total! Personally, I prefer eating a variety of flavors, so this was a point in its favor, and of the four, the red seasoned sauce especially was spicy and suited my taste~ Of course, the two mayo-based sauces were also delicious!

Dak-kalguksu for 10,000 won: a filling lunch option

And as someone who loves browsing menus, this meal dish caught my eye right away: dak-kalguksu (chicken noodle soup, ₩10,000)—the moment I saw it, I just had a strong feeling it would be delicious! So without any hesitation, I ordered it right away!

Steaming bowl of Yanggyegok's chicken noodle soup
Broth full of chicken and vegetables in the noodle soup

The broth was piping hot, steam billowing up, which is exactly my style—especially since the chicken broth was clearly well-extracted, giving it a rich flavor~ There was plenty of chicken and vegetables, and the noodles were chewy—how could it not be delicious! On top of that, it's a hearty style that's perfect as a lunch recommendation for nearby office workers! It was a good fit for a group dinner spot, but also perfect for local office workers' lunch or dinner~

Is Yanggyegok a good group dinner spot near Yangjae Station? Final verdict

With good accessibility and available parking, it's an easy restaurant to visit, and it's clean and pleasant enough to be a good environment for a group meat dinner~ On top of that, the main charcoal dakgalbi dish was great quality, and there were plenty of accompaniments, which I liked! Next time I want to try dak-hanmari and dakdoritang too~
