Dogok-dong charcoal chicken grill with crunchy cartilage: Yanggyegok

In short

Yanggyegok is a charcoal-grilled chicken restaurant in Dogok-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Yangjae Station Exit 3. The writer ordered the Yanggyegok Platter (₩55,000), which brings salt dakgalbi, gochujang dakgalbi, chicken cartilage and deodeok for two, plus bibim mak-guksu (spicy buckwheat noodles), and grilled it all over charcoal: the salt dakgalbi came out with crisp skin and the cartilage had a satisfying crunch. Yanggyegok is a good choice when you want mild and spicy flavors on one table.

How to get to Yanggyegok from Yangjae Station, and where to park

Inside Yanggyegok: room for group dinners

The interior at Yanggyegok is pretty spacious, so it would work well for a company dinner too! The tables are well spaced, which makes it comfortable to use, and with the high ceilings and good ventilation, it was a pleasant place to eat :)

What's on the Yanggyegok menu

True to being a chicken specialist, they serve a variety of menu items like dakgalbi (grilled marinated chicken), dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken stew) and dak-kalguksu (chicken noodle soup). I've tried the dakgalbi and dakdoritang several times, and both are delicious, so I recommend them :) There's also a lunch special, which I'd recommend to office workers too!

Side dishes and the self-serve bar at Yanggyegok

When you order grilled chicken at Yanggyegok, the basic side dishes are perilla leaves, radish wraps, pickled gochujang and flying fish roe, and the sauces are spicy sauce, wasabi mayo, cheese and teriyaki! It's a simple set, but paired with the grilled chicken, the combination is really perfect :)

For any extra side dishes you need, there's a self-serve bar! It has ssamjang, garlic, cheongyang chili peppers, plus kimchi and pickled radish :)

What comes on the ₩55,000 Yanggyegok Platter, and is it enough for two?

I ordered the Yanggyegok Platter, priced at ₩55,000! It's meant to serve 2, but if you don't eat much, I think three people could eat plenty from it too :) The platter had a nice variety — salt dakgalbi, gochujang dakgalbi, chicken cartilage and deodeok (mountain herb root) — so it was great to enjoy so many different things!

Grilling it over charcoal, the charcoal aroma was seriously incredible. The heat wasn't too intense either, so it wasn't hard to grill :)

The salt dakgalbi had crispy skin and a soft interior — so good! It wasn't spicy or overpowering, just mild and easy to eat without any guilt :) Eating it together with the grilled deodeok made a really great combination!

How crunchy is the chicken cartilage at Yanggyegok?

The chicken cartilage had that distinctively crunchy texture that's so appealing, and with meat still attached, it got more delicious the more I chewed! It would honestly make a perfect drinking snack too :)

Gochujang dakgalbi: how spicy it is and how to grill it

Since the gochujang dakgalbi has a marinade on it, it was a bit trickier to grill than the salt dakgalbi. But if you keep turning it diligently, it cooks through quickly and you can enjoy it deliciously :)

It's seasoned with gochujang, so I'd recommend it for anyone who likes bold, punchy flavors! It's barely spicy though, so even people who can't handle spice should be able to enjoy it :)

Bibim mak-guksu, the cold noodle side to order with it

We also ordered bibim mak-guksu (spicy buckwheat noodles) as a side! Since it's a meal item, the portion was really generous too. I've always only had the water-based mak-guksu, so I was curious about the bibim version and ordered it, haha. The bibim version was tangy and sweet with a really tasty seasoning, and it went great alongside the meat :)

Is Yanggyegok in Dogok-dong worth a visit? Final verdict

Overall, the food was delicious and you could really feel that charcoal aroma, so it was a satisfying meal! The combination of salt dakgalbi, gochujang dakgalbi and bibim mak-guksu worked really well together :) I liked being able to enjoy everything from mild to bold flavors, and the portions were generous enough to leave you full and satisfied! I'd recommend it to anyone looking for dakgalbi around Yangjae :)
