Kongguksu table setting at Sangam Hoegwan

Office workers in Sangam, Seoul, always struggling with what to eat for lunch? Let me introduce a kongguksu (cold soy milk noodle soup) place that'll fill you up properly. That day I wasn't in the mood for anything too spicy or heavy, so I wanted something clean and satisfying — I looked around for a good Sangam lunch spot and landed on Sangam Hoegwan, which is inside a food court so it's great for eating alone too 😋

Where is Sangam Hoegwan and what are its hours?

Sangam Hoegwan menu and prices: what we ordered

Sangam Hoegwan menu focused on kongguksu and bibim noodles

The menu is simple! I do like places with tons of options, but since my whole goal that day was kongguksu, having just a few items actually felt more reassuring haha. The mains are just a few kinds of kongguksu, bibim noodles, and perilla oil myeon — that's it — but there are set options where you get sides and mandu (dumplings) together.

  • ▪️Bibim noodle mandu set ₩10,000
  • ▪️Crispy kimchi pancake ₩8,000

I went for a perfect balance — mild, savory kongguksu, spicy bibim noodles, and nutty kimchi pancake on the side, haha. Ordering the mandu sets meant the portions were generous too 👍🏻

How thick is the kongguksu soy milk broth?

When I tried the broth of the kongguksu I ordered at Sangam Hoegwan, it had a noticeable heaviness that was clearly different from the thin, watery(?) broth of most regular kongguksu!

The soy milk broth was quite rich and nutty — and kongguksu is only really good when the natural taste of the beans comes through, right? That was the part I liked most. But since kongguksu is usually seasoned yourself, sometimes you can mess up the seasoning, unfortunately...

Bowl of kongguksu seasoned with salt

That day was exactly a seasoning-fail day haha. I put in way too much salt and it became greasy and salty, totally inedible... I cautiously asked the staff for help, and they gave me a refill so readily and generously that I was honestly touched ㅠㅠ...

Kongguksu with refilled soy milk broth

Honestly, when you eat kongguksu, you end up drinking more of the soy milk broth than eating the noodles. If your broth runs low, or you mess up the seasoning like I did, keep in mind you can get a free refill of the soy milk 👍🏻👍🏻

Soft noodles with creamy soy milk broth

The soft noodle texture also went really well with the creamy soy milk broth, so I ate a hearty, satisfying meal.

Lifting up a bite of kongguksu noodles

Kongguksu and bibim noodles together: how the pairing worked

And then there was the bibim noodles, which turned out to be the best pairing with kongguksu... The flavor is basically the opposite, which made it even more satisfying haha.

Spicy bibim noodles served alongside the kongguksu

Honestly, when I eat kongguksu I'm usually the type to just order kongguksu — even with two people, we'd usually order two bowls of kongguksu — so this was almost my first time trying a different menu item alongside it, haha. But after trying it... at Sangam Hoegwan, I'm definitely ordering this combo from now on 🥰

Sangam Hoegwan bibim noodles topped with seaweed flakes

The bibim noodles lean heavily spicy, with a strong, punchy flavor and a deep sesame oil (or perilla oil?) aroma, plus a sprinkle of seaweed flakes on top — both the taste and the smell were great.

Alternating a bite of mild kongguksu with a bite of spicy, punchy bibim noodles made the strengths of each taste feel even more pronounced! Looking at the photo, I can still practically smell the spicy sauce and the cool cucumber 💘

How big are the mandu sets at Sangam Hoegwan?

If you're looking for a hearty Sangam lunch spot, the mandu set isn't optional — it's a must. As you can see, ordering the set gets you two big steamed mandu (dumplings), and eating both of those alone already fills you up quite a bit, haha.

Especially for office workers, you've got to survive another 5–6 hours or more after lunch, so eating a proper meal really matters. This combo lets you eat heartily without going overboard, and it pairs well with the noodles — highly recommend the mandu set +_+

Lunch spread with the mandu set and kimchi pancake together

I got really full eating the mandu set plus the kimchi pancake, haha. If you're visiting with a friend and one of you doesn't eat as much, it might be nice to order one mandu set, one noodle dish on its own, and one kimchi pancake to share.

There's a kind of oily, nutty satisfaction that neither the noodles nor the mandu could give — a completely different flavor experience ✨️ It was fried crispy with a great texture, and the squid inside gave it real depth of flavor.

Is Sangam Hoegwan worth it for a solo lunch in Sangam?

If you're looking for a hearty or solo-friendly Sangam lunch spot in Seoul, Sangam Hoegwan is a pretty solid choice! Summer is quietly slipping away now — how about one last thick, rich bowl of kongguksu before full autumn arrives? 🙂
