Gyeongju dessert shop packing six mochi as travel gifts: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a premium dessert takeout shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju that makes and sells everything on the same day. A stop after lunch meant one yogurt mango rice cake, two yogurt peach rice cakes and three raw chocolate rice cakes packed to go — one raw chocolate each — and the yogurt mango and peach mochi were big enough to fill a palm. Tareudang is a good place to pick up both a Gyeongju travel gift and dessert to eat right away.

Festivals are in full swing across the country these days, right? They say Gyeongju is the number one domestic travel destination — is that true? 😊 If you're visiting Gyeongju, Tareudang, a dessert spot on Hwangnidang-gil, is a must-stop. Even Gyeongju locals go out of their way to visit. Here's my Hwangnam mochi takeout review.

What Tareudang looks like inside and out

Tareudang has a cute, single-story building.

I visited right after lunch, and other people were already ordering ahead of me. Since they only make and sell that day's batch, some of the popular items were already gone. It's a premium dessert takeout specialist. We needed both a gift and something to eat right away — Tareudang was perfect for that! Thanks to the friendly staff.

Boxed rice cakes packed to go from Tareudang

Everyone in our group loves raw chocolate, so we ordered one each — it was the mochi I was most looking forward to. Packing and an ice box are available if you leave a Naver review. I was heading straight home so I skipped the packing, but if you're not eating it right away, definitely get the ice box. Turnover is fast, so you won't wait long.

There's plenty to do around Tareudang. It's also great for exploring Hwangnidang-gil. If you walk around for a while your sugar might dip, and that's when a takeout box from Tareudang comes in handy for a quick rest stop. Try eating it with Cheomseongdae or Daereungwon in the background — it should give you a second wind.

Tareudang's packed dessert carried around during a Gyeongju trip

From now on is the best time to travel Gyeongju day and night. Pack a snack to go and you can stop and recharge anytime. I highly recommend this as a date course on Hwangnidang-gil.

How Tareudang's mochi tastes

Size comparison of yogurt fruit rice cakes and raw chocolate rice cake

Only the raw chocolate rice cake was small. The yogurt mango rice cake and yogurt peach rice cake were big enough to fill a palm.

Yogurt mango mochi

🎈The yogurt mango rice cake has that perfect, moderately chewy rice cake texture 👍 The sweetness of the mango plus the tang of the yogurt made it almost a shame to finish. Even writing this makes me want another one... I should go back soon.

Yogurt peach mochi

🎈The yogurt peach rice cake has a whole peach tucked inside, which is in season right now — how could it not be delicious. The combo of tangy yogurt and peach is a must-try.

Raw chocolate mochi

🎈The raw chocolate rice cake is small but heavy. Tareudang also seems to pack things really carefully. Unwrapping each one, you can feel the care put into the packaging — it just makes you happy.

Raw chocolate mochi with a visible bite mark

Can you feel the chewiness? One bite and the tooth mark stayed right there. Chewy and sweet — exactly the perfect chocolate mochi I was hoping for.
