Hwangnidang-gil mochi shop with a 1-hour room-temp limit: Tareudang

Walking along Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, I stopped by Tareudang, a shop selling fruit mochi. A fair crowd had gathered out front, and the showcase revealed a lineup from fruit mochi to egg tarts.

This time I bought one each of mango yogurt, gold kiwi, and fig yogurt mochi — three total. The line looked long but moved faster than expected, and thanks to a Naver review event I also got an ice pack and cooler bag.

Where is Tareudang? An easy stop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju

Tareudang is a small shop with an eye-catching orange-and-white striped awning and orange window frames. The order counter and showcase face the street, so you can check the menu even from outside.

The location made it easy to drop in naturally while wandering Hwangnidang-gil. It's also a good spot to grab a snack to go after a meal, while walking around the neighborhood.

How long is the wait at Tareudang? A long line that moved fast

When I visited, there were quite a few customers and the line out front was fairly long. At first I thought I'd be waiting a while, but since people were quickly picking their menu and packing up to go, the line shrank fast.

With so many customers buying quickly and moving on, the wait felt lighter than the visible line suggested. It probably varies by time of day, but when I went, buying turned out to be smoother than expected.

Tareudang fruit mochi menu and prices: three flavors picked

The showcase at Tareudang listed several flavors — mango yogurt, peach yogurt, fig yogurt, gold kiwi, pineapple, and more. I picked one each of mango yogurt, gold kiwi, and fig yogurt mochi.

A sign in the showcase also noted ₩500 off per piece when buying 4 or more mochi. We only bought three, but that's worth knowing if you're visiting with a group or packing extra to take home.

The standing sign showed strawberry and tangerine mochi marked 'sold out, see you in winter.' If there's a specific fruit you're after, it's worth checking availability when you visit.

Besides the fruit mochi, an egg tart was listed at ₩3,500 and a cheesecake at ₩5,000. Seemed like a good spread for a group with different tastes.

Write a Naver review at Tareudang, get an ice pack and cooler bag

At the time of my visit, Tareudang was running an event where writing a Naver review got you an ice pack and cooler bag. We wrote a review and received both.

Staff explained that regular packaging holds up at room temperature for about an hour, and that using the ice pack and cooler bag lets you travel longer than that.

That was useful since I wasn't planning to eat right away and wanted to keep exploring Hwangnidang-gil a bit more. The cooler bag itself, with a bright background and Tareudang's logo and artwork, had a handle that was easy to carry around.

That said, actual cooling time can vary depending on weather and how you're moving around, so if you're traveling a long time, it's worth checking when you buy. The review event may also change depending on when you visit.

Opening the mango mochi after carrying it home from Tareudang

Each mochi came individually wrapped. Wrapped in colorful paper, they made for nice photos with the shop as a backdrop.

Opening the mango mochi revealed yellow mango flesh and white cream inside. The photos show clearly how the fruit and cream are layered.

The cream can get on your hands or the wrapper, so it's probably better to sit down and unfold the wrapping than to eat it in a rush while walking.

What stuck with me from this visit was the variety of flavors, a line that shrank faster than expected, and the cooler packaging. A good place to pick a few and pack them up when a craving for fruit dessert hits while wandering Hwangnidang-gil.
