Sunday-night dumpling takeout on Hongdae festival street: MANDOO BAR
In short
MANDOO BAR is a dumpling bar and pub on the 2nd floor of the Red Road festival street in Hongdae, Mapo, Seoul. On a packed Sunday evening the writer ordered gyoza and steamed dumplings to go, half meat and half kimchi, and carried them home on public transit — the packaging held in the smell and the gyoza kept some of its crispness. The steamed dumplings were so full of filling they tasted good even without soy sauce, and MANDOO BAR's dumpling hot pot is next on the list for a dine-in visit.

I used to go to Hongdae all the time in my early twenties, but now that I'm working, I only get there once in a while. Still, I keep coming back because the neighborhood is lined with good restaurants. And this time, I couldn't resist MANDOO BAR (만두바), the gyoza place everyone in Hongdae raves about.

Where is MANDOO BAR in Hongdae? 2nd floor on Red Road festival street
MANDOO BAR is on Hongdae's Red Road, right along the festival street here. If you keep walking down this street, you'll find it — anyone who loves eating out in Hongdae probably already knows this stretch. That's exactly why we ended up visiting.
A friend who came with me had stopped by not long ago and loved it so much she recommended it to me. She said she was surprised a dumpling shop could feel this hip. Yeah, Hongdae really is a street for young energy.

Most restaurants are on the first floor, but in Hongdae, being on the second floor doesn't matter at all if the word of mouth is strong enough. A playful cartoon character greets you at the entrance — the owner's vibe felt very Gen Z.

What MANDOO BAR is like on a Sunday evening
Given the name, Hongdae's gyoza favorite MANDOO BAR, I expected a crowd — and sure enough, there were plenty of people already drinking early. What impressed me was that even on a Sunday, the place was completely packed. These people really know how to bring the energy.

The interior was decorated in such a charming, detailed way that I fell for it too. Next time, I want to order the dumpling hot pot, which is apparently the signature dish.

The kitchen was very clean, and the owner had that friendly warmth underneath it all, which put me in a great mood. Places like this, I feel, deliver both taste and service at once — so I saved it to my places list.

Does MANDOO BAR takeout smell on the subway home?
I wanted to eat in the store, but I had plans, so I just took it to go. They packed it so neatly that there was no smell at all, and it made it home just fine on public transit.

MANDOO BAR, Hongdae's gyoza favorite, is packed with a variety of menu items — Mexican tacos, gyoza, and more. Here's what I chose. Scroll down if you're curious.

Gyoza and steamed dumplings, half meat and half kimchi
I got the MANDOO BAR gyoza and steamed dumplings, and I loved that every menu item can be ordered half kimchi dumpling, half meat dumpling. A lot of places don't allow that, but this one is generous. Just looking at it, I already wanted it as a full dinner.

The MANDOO BAR gyoza looked like it would've been even better eaten fresh in the store. It reminded me of the pan-fried dumplings on Culinary Class Wars, where they use starch to get that texture — same idea here.

Flip it over and you can see the dumpling glistening with filling, packed full — half meat, half kimchi, and I loved that. The MANDOO BAR gyoza let me use the phrase 'crispy outside, moist inside' in the most natural way.

Even after some time had passed, a bit of crispness still remained on the surface, and that slight contrast with the soft, moist dumpling wasn't bad at all. This is what gyoza should be.

The meat dumpling was good too, but the slightly crisp texture went even better with the tangy kimchi dumpling, I thought. That's just my personal taste — the meat dumpling is fine too, but if I had to pick, I'd say I'm firmly Team Kimchi now.

Soy sauce and chili-flake pickled radish with the dumplings
They give you soy sauce and pickled radish, and I really love that theirs comes with chili flakes added — the spicy kick of the chili flakes lends a nice savory edge.

The pieces were a great bite size, so after a steamed dumpling I'd pop one in my mouth — so good. Having this happy little moment before heading to work the next day felt genuinely blissful.

How much filling is inside MANDOO BAR's steamed dumplings?
The steamed dumplings looked amazing — I honestly didn't expect a place called MANDOO BAR to pull off visuals like this. They're not using mass-produced dumplings; they're clearly hand-pleated one by one, which is impressive and a guarantee of good flavor.

The wrapper isn't especially thin, yet you can still see all the filling inside — meaning it's stuffed that generously. Thinking back to the old dumpling adulteration scandal, this is dumpling-making at its finest.

Just like the meat dumpling, the kimchi dumpling's insides are clearly visible too. It's hard to even gauge how much filling they packed in, but one thing's certain — it's delicious, no question about it.

Holding one in your hand, the heaviness is so satisfying. I bit into it carefully, worried the wrapper might tear with the chopsticks and lose all that precious filling.

You can chew through each individual ingredient, and the crunchy texture pairs beautifully with the chewy wrapper. It's tasty even without dipping it in soy sauce — if there were a dumpling specialist like this near my house, I'd buy it as a late-night snack every single time.

I tried the meat dumpling too, and wow, it was so good. Next time, if I get the chance, I want to enjoy it right there at MANDOO BAR — order the dumpling hot pot, crush some soju-and-beer, and then head to a coin karaoke room feeling full and happy.
