Free-corkage dumpling bar in Hongdae for solo takeout: MANDOO BAR
In short
MANDOO BAR is a handmade fusion gyoza (Korean dumpling) bar and restaurant on Red Road in Hongdae, Mapo, Seoul. Visiting alone, I ordered Ppuring Gyoza and a half-and-half steamed dumpling set of meat and kimchi (8,000 won) from the giant QR menu, waited on the first floor, picked up on the second, and ate on Red Road itself — toppings burst through the wrappers and the portions were generous. With pickled radish salad seasoned just right, MANDOO BAR is a great-value takeout spot in Hongdae worth returning to.

A takeout report from MANDOO BAR, the number-one Hongdae street food spot on Red Road — I'd recommend the Ppuring Gyoza with a meat-and-kimchi steamed dumpling combo.

For me, dumplings are about as addictive as fried chicken — however you cook them, they're delicious, and grilling some up when I'm hungry or have no appetite always brings it back.

Finding MANDOO BAR on Red Road: wait on the first floor, pick up on the second
A place like this was made for someone like me, so I couldn't not visit — I headed to Hongdae. The shop sits right in the middle of Red Road, which reminds me of Cortis's REDRED, so it was easy to find.
They call themselves the world's first K-Gyoza, with handmade fusion-topping gyoza you can't find anywhere else, which had me excited. The cute mascot visible right from the entrance was a nice touch.
The shop is split into two floors — the first floor is for takeout customers, so you can wait comfortably outside the shop and head up to the second floor to pick up once you get the notification. Great setup for introverts too, haha :)

Ordering Ppuring Gyoza and half meat, half kimchi steamed dumplings by giant QR
Scanning the giant QR code brought up the menu, and I could pay right there too — even though it was my first time ordering this way, it was easy. The dumplings aren't just steamer-basic; they're fusion-style, packed with flavors that even kids would love.

Menu
- Mexican Taco Gyoza with guacamole & nacho chips — perfect beer food
- Sweet-and-savory Ppuring Seasoning Gyoza
- Signature MANDOO BAR Gyoza (classic)
- Okonomi Gyoza
- Supreme Seasoned Gyoza
- Yurinki Gyoza

...and more. The prices are reasonable, and the plump-looking dumplings convinced me to also order the unfried steamed version. You can go half-and-half, and it costs ₩8,000 :)
What's on the dine-in food and drinks menu upstairs?
If you're eating in on the 2nd floor, there are anju (drinking snacks) too, so it seemed like a good spot to hit for both first and second rounds. The dumpling hot pot, sundubu (soft tofu) hot pot, and cold jeyuk (spicy pork) all caught my eye. If I hadn't been solo, I would've stayed to eat.
The drink list was packed enough to fill an entire page — true to the name BAR, you could tell the owner had put real care into it.

Mandu-mungi the mascot and how the takeout arrives packed
The dumplings are cooked to order, so with a comfy seat while waiting, they came out fast. While waiting, I learned about the mascot — its name is Mandu-mungi.

It's got a dog-like vibe that makes it super cute.
The food was brought straight to my table, packaged neatly with each menu item labeled, which was great for sharing without any mix-ups.

Eating the gyoza standing on Hongdae's Red Road
Red Road is so clean and the weather was so nice, it was the perfect spot for street-eating gyoza. The shop itself was clean enough that I considered eating in, but I stepped outside onto the road instead — and it was the right call.

Street food these days can sometimes feel skimpy, but MANDOO BAR is generous and gives you a lot — a great-value spot with a good conscience. The flavor isn't too intense, so I think foreigners would love it too, and I kept eating without stopping.

They're not exaggerating when they call this the ultimate Hongdae street food — the toppings inside are so packed they practically burst through the wrapper. Thanks to the owner's generosity, I had a full-on dumpling day.
Even the basic pickled radish and soy sauce that came with it were packed leak-free in a little container, and the pickled radish was the key point — the seasoning was so perfectly balanced I wanted to learn the owner's secret.

Thanks to the friendly owner, I had a great takeout experience and the taste was perfect too — I'd recommend MANDOO BAR, and I'd definitely visit again.
