Jongak Station sushi with tablet ordering: Choe Uyeong Sushiya

Today I'm introducing a restaurant I visited while hanging around Jongak Station 🌻 Besides sushi, they had a wide range of dishes like kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) and mixed tempura, so there was something for every taste! It's also within a 15-minute walk from Gwanghwamun or Deoksugung, so it's a great stop if you're strolling around the area! Here's my honest review with the photos I took while eating 🍣

Where is Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch, and what about parking and hours?

Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch is in the basement of the Tower8 building, which you'll see if you walk straight from Exit 1 of Jongak Station. It's within a 10-minute walk of both Jongak Station and Gwanghwamun Station, so it's pretty easy to get to 🚉

Walking down the alley to the left of the Tower8 building, you'll see stairs leading down to the basement!

Go down the stairs and Choe Uyeong Sushiya is right there

There's even a kiosk out front where you can order takeout directly, which seemed convenient

The tachi (counter) seats caught my eye the moment I walked in 👀 They looked like a comfortable spot to eat even if you're dining alone!

Of course, the table seats where you can sit together were quite spacious too, so it wouldn't feel cramped with a group 👍 There's also a long table in the back that seats 8 or more, which looked like a great spot for gatherings or work dinners

We visited as a pair that day and sat at the tachi seats — each seat has its own tablet, so we could check the menu and order comfortably. Pickled radish, pickled ginger, and house-made soy sauce are self-serve, help yourself to as much as you need, and once you order, they bring over the soup stock and wasabi!

Being a sushi restaurant, they had sashimi too, and best of all, you could order the sushi pieces you wanted one by one 🤤 I wanted to try a bit of everything, so I ordered a wide variety!

What two people ordered at Choe Uyeong Sushiya, and what it cost

First out were the kaisendon and premium sushi!

Mixed kaisendon, 14,000 won: sashimi thicker than expected

I ordered the kaisendon thinking it'd be a light dish, one per person....🙄 Can you see how thick the fish is on top of the rice?? There was way more fish than I expected, enough to fill you up on this one dish alone!

The kaisendon rice isn't seasoned on its own, so you add house-made soy sauce to taste — there's minced tuna mixed through the rice too, adding a savory depth to every bite!

I wrapped the rice and fish in seaweed and ate it like this 😋

Premium deluxe sushi, 17 pieces for 33,000 won

Next up is the most expensive item, the premium sushi set. It had a huge range, from abalone and uni (sea urchin roe) to ankimo (monkfish liver) sushi — and above all, the fish was thick enough to be genuinely filling!

Udon, 5,000 won

I was curious about the udon too so I ordered it — it came out in a huge bowl, so generous we couldn't finish it... a real value menu item 👀

Mixed tempura, 13,000 won: shrimp, sweet potato, scallop and mochi

Personally, this exceeded my expectations! As soon as I tried the fried shrimp on top of the kaisendon, it was so good I ordered the mixed tempura right away 🍤 It comes with shrimp, sweet potato, scallop, and rice cake mochi (tteok). Having tried them all!!!! This place is great at tempura...👍 I really love fried shrimp and have tried plenty, but this had none of that frozen-shrimp taste! The shrimp was plump and the batter was crisp

And honestly, I thought the sweet potato tempura might be a bit dry, but that was unexpected too 🍠 It had just the right sweetness and a fluffy texture that was more moist than I expected — delicious! Dipping it in the sauce that came alongside also went well with the savory flavor of the tempura

Non-alcoholic yuzu drink, 4,000 won

Lastly, out of curiosity we ordered the non-alcoholic yuzu-flavored soda! Not too sour or too sweet, refreshing and clean — really good 🍋 We ended up ordering 2 cans in total 🙄

Is Choe Uyeong Sushiya a good Jongak Station sushi spot for solo diners?

Choe Uyeong Sushiya has a tablet at every tachi seat, so it didn't feel awkward at all even eating alone. That made me think it's a great sushi spot near Jongak Station for solo dining too! I also liked that you can pick a variety of dishes to fit whatever budget you have ✔️ Above all, the aged fish on the sushi was thick overall without any fishy taste, so I really enjoyed the meal 🤤 If I find myself around Jongak Station or Gwanghwamun again, I'll definitely stop by once more~!
