Seolleung crab restaurant for spicy braised blue crab: Haeseonok
In short
Haeseonok Seolleung Branch is a 40-year-old gamjatang (pork bone stew) and blue crab stew restaurant about a 10-minute walk from Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul, over toward the bar street. On a weekday evening at 7pm, the writer and her husband ordered the small braised blue crab (kkotgejjim) for 59,000 won with three bowls of rice at 1,000 won each — Haeseonok serves the crab not steamed white but in a spicy sauce with two abalone and shrimp in the pot, and the couple cleared all three bowls. The sauce mixed into rice is good enough to win over even someone who usually finds picking crab meat too much work.

It's been a while since my husband and I met up after work — we went to Haeseonok Seolleung Branch, famous for gamjatang (pork bone stew) and crab stew near Seolleung Station! My husband had been saying he wanted braised crab for ages and I kept forgetting, so we finally went for it. =33
Where is Haeseonok Seolleung Branch, and what are the hours?
Haeseonok Seolleung Branch is on the 1st floor at 5 Eonju-ro 98-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and it's open Mon–Fri and Sun 10:30–22:30, closed every Saturday. Haeseonok has two branches, Seolleung and Yeoksam, and we went to the Seolleung branch since it's closer to Seolleung Station!
Haeseonok is about a 10-minute walk from the station. Just so you know, it's over on the side with the bar street — grilled meat spots, pojangmacha, that kind of area~!
What Haeseonok Seolleung Branch looks like from the street

Haeseonok Seolleung Branch is right on the 1st floor so it was easy to find without wandering around! They say it's a gamjatang and crab stew specialist with 40 years of tradition, so I was excited thinking my husband would love it! If you're into these kinds of classic 'ajae' (middle-aged-guy) dishes, pay attention now
Inside Haeseonok Seolleung Branch at 7pm on a weekday

We went around 7pm on a weekday, and there were more open seats than I expected, so we picked wherever we wanted! Since Haeseonok also has solo set menus, it seems like a decent number of people come to eat alone too?!

Since we'd decided on braised crab, I even read up on the benefits of crab ^__^ I usually find picking apart braised crab or seafood dishes so annoying that I don't order it with my own money lol, but my husband loves it and we hadn't had it in a while, so I was a little excited!
Haeseonok's menu: ordering on the tablet

The Haeseonok menu can be browsed and ordered all in one go via tablet, which was convenient! Let's take a look at the menu through photos
Besides the braised crab we ordered, there's a really wide variety of sides too — solo gamjatang, crab stew, seafood pancake, shrimp pancake, and more — so it seemed like a great place to come with anyone~~! The solo set menus come with a stew like gamjatang plus pancake sides like seafood pancake and shrimp pancake! I definitely want to try that next time~~
Braised blue crab (small), 59,000 won: spicy sauce, abalone and shrimp

- Braised crab (small) 59,000 won
- Rice 1,000 won × 3
Haeseonok's braised crab doesn't come out steamed plain white — it's made with a spicy sauce~ Apparently some people order it not knowing that! Since it's a braised dish it took a bit of time to come out, but the second it arrived, the smell alone made us go wow,,
You can dig into the braised crab right away once it's served! My husband cut and picked it all apart for me..♥ Also, you definitely need plastic gloves to pick the meat, so make sure to ask the owner for them! There's absolutely no way to eat this with regular chopsticks/spoon.

Haeseonok's braised crab also has two abalone inside, and they were huge and hearty, plus chewy and springy!! My husband said even the innards were nutty and delicious.. Eaten with rice it's a total rice thief. There were also several shrimp inside, plump and really, really good!ㅠㅠ My husband, who knows his braised seafood, said there's a fair amount of crab meat too. If you order the small size, two people can eat until stuffed.. Even though I wasn't hungry at all, I still found myself scraping up rice with the sauce,,

My husband even mixed rice into the crab shell that had roe in it!! I didn't realize it, but turns out I really like braised crab… That day we'd had something sweet at a café beforehand so I wasn't very hungry, but the two of us still ate three bowls of rice! Mixing rice into the braised crab sauce like this — this is seriously a rice thief,,
Is Haeseonok Seolleung Branch worth a return visit for gamjatang?
My husband kept singing praises about how delicious the braised crab was the whole way home, so I felt glad and proud I took him~~!! Next time I should go try the gamjatang.
If you're near Seolleung or Yeoksam and craving classic dishes like braised crab, crab stew, or gamjatang, I highly recommend Haeseonok. The owner was also young and kind, which made it even more satisfying! Highly recommended as a solo dining spot too~~
