Anniversary dinner at Macheonchwi, a Mannyeon-dong Chinese restaurant

In short

Macheonchwi Daejeon Mannyeon branch is a Chinese course restaurant on Dunsandae-ro 117beon-gil in Mannyeon-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. Ordered for two, the 18,000-won-per-person Modern Simple Set brought out ryusansul (stir-fried seafood, meat and vegetables), chili prawns and Beijing-style sweet and sour pork, followed by a noodle course and dessert, so the two diners each picked jjajangmyeon or jjamppong and shared. The calm room made Macheonchwi a good fit for an anniversary or birthday meal out.

On special days, you naturally look for a place that's a little more atmospheric than usual, somewhere you can properly enjoy the food too. This time we headed to Macheonchwi Daejeon Mannyeon branch to enjoy a proper Chinese course meal. Spoiler up front: the taste, the composition, and the atmosphere were all satisfying, making it a great Daejeon Chinese restaurant for a wedding anniversary or birthday.

Macheonchwi Modern Simple Set: price and what comes with it

Macheonchwi Daejeon Mannyeon branch's Modern Simple Set is ₩18,000 per person, and we ordered the lunch course for two. I love Chinese food normally, but ordering several dishes at once can get overwhelming in both portion and price. At Macheonchwi, the course format let us taste a variety of dishes in small portions, which I really liked.

What we ordered was the Modern Simple Set for two. The set's composition was

  • Ryu sansul
  • Chili prawns
  • Beijing sweet and sour pork
  • Noodle dish: jjajangmyeon or jjamppong
  • Dessert

That's how it was laid out. Such a solid lineup.

Instead of just one dish, we got to taste a variety of Chinese dishes little by little, which made the whole composition feel really substantial. The price wasn't a burden either, and being able to enjoy dishes, then the noodle course, then dessert in order made it satisfying as a special-occasion meal too.

First course: ryusansul, a gentle start to the meal

The ryu sansul that came first in the Modern Simple Set had various ingredients mixed together softly and moistly. The sauce wasn't too sharp or salty and let the ingredients' own flavors shine, so the first dish was already delicious. The texture from the mix of vegetables and seafood was great too, and it came out warm, which made it even better.

Ryu sansul is a dish I'd normally hesitate to order à la carte because of the portion and price, so being able to try it worry-free as part of a set was nice. It felt like it gently opened up the appetite, making me look forward to the dishes that followed even more.

Are Macheonchwi's chili prawns mild enough for kids?

Macheonchwi Daejeon Mannyeon branch's chili prawns weren't overly spicy, so it seemed like something you could enjoy comfortably even with someone who can't handle spicy food, or with kids. The prawns were plump and springy with a great bite, and the sweet-and-tangy chili sauce paired well with them — a flavor anyone could enjoy.

The outside was lightly crisp while the prawns inside stayed moist and springy, so I kept reaching for more. The sauce wasn't overloaded on top either, so you could still fully feel the prawns' texture. The color looked delicious too, making it a pretty one for photos.

The Beijing sweet and sour pork was really good too. The batter wasn't too thick and stayed crisp, and the meat was tender with no gamey smell, nice and clean. Eaten with the sweet-and-tangy sauce, it had a familiar flavor that I kept thinking about afterward.

Sweet and sour pork is a must-have whenever you visit a Chinese restaurant. Macheonchwi Daejeon Mannyeon branch's Beijing sweet and sour pork had little greasiness and kept a good crisp texture, making it easy to pair with the other dishes in between bites. Ryu sansul, chili prawns, and Beijing sweet and sour pork each had different flavors and textures, so I never got tired of it all the way through.

Jjajangmyeon served as the set's noodle course
Jjamppong chosen as the set's noodle course

Jjajangmyeon or jjamppong? Two diners, one of each to share

After thoroughly enjoying the dishes, the noodle course arrived. You can choose between jjajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles) or jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup). It was nice being able to each pick according to our own preference. The jjajangmyeon's sauce was rich but not too sweet or salty, and it went well with the noodles. The glossy jjajang sauce coated the noodles evenly, so we could enjoy the final course of the meal feeling full and satisfied.

The jjamppong's broth was spicy and refreshing, cutting through the greasiness of the earlier dishes nicely. The rich broth flavor blended well with the ingredients, and it wasn't just spicy for the sake of it — it had a deep flavor that kept us going back for more spoonfuls of soup. If two people are visiting, choosing one jjajang and one jjamppong to share seems like a great idea.

Is Macheonchwi good for an anniversary dinner? Mood and dessert

After finishing the dishes through to the noodle course, the portion felt more than enough and satisfying. At the end, dessert was served too, letting us wrap up the meal neatly. Being able to enjoy the food course by course from start to finish made it a comfortable place to chat leisurely over the meal.

Macheonchwi Daejeon Mannyeon branch's food tasted great, but the calm, clean atmosphere of the space made it even more satisfying. It's a bit more subdued and upscale than a typical Chinese restaurant, so it seemed like a good place to bring parents, and also a good fit for family gatherings or a date.

Especially for special days like a birthday or wedding anniversary, the restaurant's atmosphere matters too. It's not a place where you have to be overly formal, but you can still feel like you're having a nicer meal than usual, so I'd recommend it as a spot for an anniversary dinner out.

What I liked most about the Modern Simple Set for two we had was being able to try a variety of Chinese dishes in one sitting. The soft flavor of the ryu sansul, the sweet-tangy flavor of the chili prawns, the crispy texture of the Beijing sweet and sour pork, followed by the jjajang or jjamppong and dessert — the composition felt really full.

Table with the Modern Simple Set dishes laid out

This set is especially well suited to people who prefer eating a little bit of many dishes rather than a lot of one thing. At ₩18,000 per person, being able to taste three dishes plus a noodle course and dessert felt like decent value too.

Each dish came out looking neat and appetizing, and overall the seasoning wasn't too heavy, so we could eat comfortably all the way through. Chinese food can sometimes leave you feeling heavy or greasy afterward, but that day, eating a variety of dishes in moderate portions made it much lighter.

If you're looking for a nice-atmosphere Chinese restaurant in Mannyeon-dong, Daejeon, or thinking about a family dinner spot to visit with parents, Macheonchwi Daejeon Mannyeon branch is worth a try. It also suits birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and other gatherings when you want a slightly special meal.

We enjoyed the Modern Simple Set for two, with the ryu sansul, chili prawns, Beijing sweet and sour pork, and either jjajang or jjamppong along with dessert. The food's flavor, the composition, and the store's atmosphere were all satisfying.

Next time, I'd like to visit again with family and try other menu items. If you want to enjoy various Chinese dishes at a reasonable price in Mannyeon-dong, Daejeon, I'd recommend Macheonchwi Daejeon Mannyeon branch's Modern Simple Set.
