In short

Ilpum Yeouido Branch is a kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) specialty Japanese restaurant on the basement floor of Anwon Building in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of National Assembly Station. A couple visited on a Saturday evening and shared the 26,000 won kaisendon and the 37,000 won premium kaisendon, and a staff member who spotted the pregnancy badge brought 2 pieces of flounder engawa sushi on the house. Now that the mornings and evenings have that cool breeze, don't you just start craving a bowl of rice piled high with fresh seafood? I felt exactly that way, so this past weekend evening my husband and I headed to Yeouido. Our destination: Ilpum Yeouido Branch, a Japanese restaurant famous for its kaisendon (seafood rice bowl).

We went out for a meal and came back feeling like we'd been treated like royalty 🥹

Ilpum is already well known as a kaisendon specialty spot. Besides Yeouido, they have branches in Magok, Gwanghwamun, and Gangnam, and the premium kaisendon has become even more famous through TV shows and influencer reviews. I'd been meaning to visit for a while, and this time I finally did.

But today's review has something I really want anyone who's pregnant or about to have a birthday to read to the end. We nearly missed something important because we hadn't prepared ahead of time, but thanks to a staff member, it ended up being a really warm moment. Let me walk you through it!

Where is Ilpum Yeouido Branch, and what are the hours and parking?

How to walk there from National Assembly Station

Stairs leading down to the basement level of Anwon Building

🚉 It's about a 5-minute walk from Exit 3 of National Assembly Station, roughly 350 meters, so getting there by subway is easy.

🚗 If you drive, there's parking in the building, which takes a bit of the edge off Yeouido's notorious parking shortage.

🏢 As a landmark, just remember it's B1 of Anwon Building, across from KDB Bank, and you won't get lost. (Just take the stairs shown in the photo down to the basement level!)

Even before opening time, there were already people waiting outside, and I thought, 'okay, this place is no joke.'

Saturday evening atmosphere and seating at Ilpum

On Saturday evening, the moment the doors opened, the waiting guests filed in one by one, and in the blink of an eye Ilpum Yeouido Branch was completely full. Even so, the seats were spaced generously enough that it never felt chaotic, and the upscale atmosphere made for a calm meal.

Interior of Ilpum Yeouido Branch with generously spaced seating

The interior is done in warm wood tones, giving it the feel of a high-end omakase restaurant, and the calm lighting made the food look even more appetizing.

Bar seats and table seats in the wood-toned interior

There were both bar seats facing the kitchen and spacious table seats for parties of 3 or more. The bar seats suit solo dining or a side-by-side date, while the table seats work well for family gatherings or group dinners. Since they can accommodate anywhere from small to larger groups, it might be worth calling ahead if you're looking for a spot for a gathering.

Ilpum's menu and prices: what the couple ordered

Menu at Ilpum Yeouido Branch
Menu listing kaisendon and sushi sets

💡 Signature menu: kaisendon, unagidon. The unagidon, topped with a whole top-grade domestic freshwater eel, and the kaisendon, piled high with seafood, are basically the face of Ilpum Yeouido Branch.

💡 What we ordered: kaisendon, premium kaisendon, and 2 pieces of flounder engawa sushi (pregnancy service).

Just flipping through the menu, there are so many kinds of kaisendon that it's fun just choosing. They also have sushi sets, kimchobap (rolled sushi) items like futomaki, à la carte sushi, sashimi, and fried dishes, plus sake and highballs — so it's a great spot for a night when you want a bit of atmosphere too.

How to get the pregnancy or birthday sushi: use the Naver Reservation coupon

Ilpum Yeouido Branch offers 2 pieces of sushi on the house to guests who are pregnant or celebrating a birthday. We used this perk to choose flounder engawa.

But it turns out this service only works if you use a coupon in advance through Naver Reservation. We completely missed that part when booking 😭 We were first shown to the bar seats, but a staff member noticed the pregnancy badge hanging on my bag and spoke to us first. She moved us to a larger table seat meant for parties of 3 or more, and even though we hadn't pre-used the coupon, since our Naver Reservation was confirmed, she let us know there was a pregnancy coupon available and made a special exception to give us the service this time. It really moved us 🥹

That said, she made clear this wasn't a standard courtesy every time — it was something she did for us on this occasion only — so I'd really recommend checking and using the coupon in advance on the reservation screen so you don't miss it like we did. Besides birthday-celebration sushi and pregnancy-support sushi, there are perks like a free corkage coupon too, so it's worth taking a look when you book.

Starters at Ilpum: baek-kimchi (white kimchi), soup and chawanmushi

Once seated, baek-kimchi (white kimchi), jangguk (clear soup), and chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg custard) arrive first. The chawanmushi is steamed silky-smooth like a pudding, topped with gamtae (seaweed flakes), and you find a shrimp with a satisfying bite when you dig in.

Chawanmushi topped with gamtae, part of the basic starters

It was light but every ingredient felt vivid, whetting our appetite even before the main dishes arrived. The baek-kimchi was crisp and refreshing, doing a great job of cleansing the palate between bites of raw fish. Even the basic side dishes showed this much care, so it felt like being treated well right from the start.

Kaisendon 26,000 won vs premium kaisendon 37,000 won

(Premium kaisendon on the left / regular kaisendon on the right) The difference between the kaisendon and the premium kaisendon comes down to the ingredients and how many kinds are used. The regular kaisendon is built around solid basics like tuna, salmon, and flounder sashimi, while the premium version adds scallop, abalone, ankimo (monkfish liver), uni (sea urchin), and salmon roe on top — so lavish it hides the rice completely.

Side-by-side comparison of premium kaisendon and regular kaisendon

With the price gap between ₩26,000 and ₩37,000, I'd say the premium is better if you want to enjoy a variety of ingredients you don't often get to try in one bowl, while the regular kaisendon is a better fit if you just want a fresh, no-fuss seafood rice bowl.

The 26,000 won kaisendon at Ilpum

A bowl of regular kaisendon
Kaisendon topped with tuna, salmon, and flounder

The first appeal was that with all this colorful seafood piled on the rice, you get to enjoy so many flavors in one bowl. The fish was cut thick, so every bite had a chewy texture, and each ingredient had a different grain, making every mouthful feel new.

The rice was already lightly seasoned, so it was delicious even without dipping much soy sauce. My favorite way to eat it was with a bit of wasabi on top, scooping fish and rice together — a sharp bite up front with a clean finish.

A spoonful of kaisendon topped with wasabi
Kaisendon wrapped in gamtae and seaweed

Wrapping bites in the gamtae or seaweed that came with it added a briny sea aroma and was a nice touch, and the portion was hearty enough to be a satisfying dinner on its own.

The 37,000 won premium kaisendon at Ilpum

The highlight of the night was the premium kaisendon. It was visually so impressive we actually said 'wow' out loud. The fish was packed so densely on top that we couldn't help photographing it before eating.

Precious ingredients like scallop, abalone, ankimo (monkfish liver), uni (sea urchin), salmon roe, and tuna were all gathered in one bowl, and apparently the exact composition can vary slightly day to day depending on what's fresh. The uni had a rich, nutty sweetness that paired beautifully with the gamtae, and the salmon roe burst with a briny, salty pop. The abalone was chewy while the scallop melted in the mouth — comparing the different textures ingredient by ingredient was half the fun.

Going back and forth — 'this combo next, then that one' — we never once got tired of it, all the way to the last spoonful. I think it's a dish worthy of treating someone special on an anniversary or a big occasion, or even just treating yourself.

Flounder engawa sushi, the free pregnancy service

The flounder engawa we got as a service was impressive enough to deserve its own mention. Engawa is apparently the fin muscle that only comes in a small amount from a single flounder, and maybe that's why it had a chewy texture with a bit of richness, giving it a nutty flavor clearly different from other cuts.

Two pieces of flounder engawa sushi served as a complimentary service

With the first bite it was springy, then the nutty flavor spread gently the more we chewed — the two pieces disappeared in no time.

The quality was so good it was hard to believe it was complimentary — it made me think, 'I'd love to order more of this on its own.'

Finishing the meal: cold udon and dessert

Cold udon topped with fried chicken

Midway through the meal, cold udon arrives. Chewy noodles in a tangy, chilled broth, topped with crispy fried chicken, made for the perfect palate cleanser between bites of sashimi. Even sitting in the broth, the batter stayed crisp and the meat stayed juicy — a surprisingly nice touch.

Mango dessert served at the end of the meal
A plate of soft mango dessert

To finish, they serve a soft mango-based dessert. It felt like a clean, refreshing way to end after such a filling meal, and having a course-like flow from mains to dessert was very satisfying.

Verdict: who should book Ilpum Yeouido Branch

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

✅ What we liked: the eye-catching, lavish presentation and generous ingredients, the course-like structure running from chawanmushi to cold udon to dessert, and the thoughtfulness of the staff member who noticed the pregnancy badge and took care of us.

🔁 Would we return: 100%! Next time we definitely want to try the unagidon and futomaki.

✅ Recommended for: anyone wanting a special Japanese meal to treat someone on a birthday or anniversary, couples who want to make the most of perks like the pregnancy-support or birthday sushi service, anyone looking for a date or gathering spot in Yeouido, fans of seafood rice bowls loaded with ingredients, and solo diners who want a proper, satisfying meal on their own.

The table at Ilpum Yeouido Branch after finishing the meal

With this cool breeze in the air, Ilpum Yeouido Branch is a great fit for a day when you need a hearty, special meal. My husband and I left that day with both our stomachs and hearts completely full :) I think it's the kind of place where even a single meal can make you feel like you're being treated like a guest of honor.
