Budae jjigae takeout in Paju with rice cake sari: Mom's Uijeongbu

In short

Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae is a Uijeongbu-style budae jjigae (army stew) restaurant near Heyri Village in Tanhyeon-myeon, Paju, Gyeonggi. On a second visit the order was two servings of the basic budae jjigae plus cheese rice cake and sweet potato rice cake sari (add-ins), packed uncooked to boil at home instead of eating in. Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae packs in plenty of broth, so two servings felt like four, and the rice cake sari were the highlight of this takeout.

While looking for a filling meal near Heyri Village, I came across Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae. This time, instead of eating in, I got it packed to go and enjoyed it comfortably at home. I ordered two servings of the basic budae jjigae (army stew) and added rice cake sari (add-in toppings) so my kid could enjoy it too — a really hearty spread.

For reference, this was already my second visit to Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae, and to cut to the conclusion — both the first and second visits were delicious!

As for parking, there's a wide lot behind the restaurant. Maybe because I visited on a weekday, there was plenty of space.

I visited around 2pm, past the usual lunch rush, so the restaurant wasn't too crowded. Last time I visited during mealtime, it was packed.

How budae jjigae takeout is packed at Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae

The takeout from Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae comes uncooked, and they packed plenty of broth too. That day I ordered two servings of basic budae jjigae plus cheese rice cake and sweet potato rice cake sari. I appreciated how carefully everything was packed.

Once I got home and checked, everything was packed uncooked with a generous amount of broth!

Boiling the basic budae jjigae for 2 at home

I brought the two servings of basic budae jjigae home, transferred everything into a pot, and let it bubble away. Budae jjigae really is at its best once you boil it and let the ingredients meld into the broth.

The broth blended nicely with the basic ingredients — ham and sausage — and went great with rice. Two servings was plenty for two people to share. Cooking it at home also meant I could keep simmering it as much as I wanted, which was a nice perk.

I had some dumplings lying around in the fridge, so I threw those in too :)

The broth itself wasn't greasy at all — just slightly spicy with a nutty, savory taste. It really tasted like the original Uijeongbu-style budae jjigae.

Are the cheese and sweet potato rice cake sari worth adding?

The highlight of this takeout order was definitely the rice cake sari. The cheese rice cake, once boiled in the budae jjigae broth, turned chewy with a savory cheesy note added on top — a fun, different way to eat it. The sweet potato rice cake was also nice and chewy and paired well with the stew.

Personally, if you prefer rice cake sari over the usual ramyeon noodle sari, I'd recommend trying the cheese or sweet potato rice cake. Both have different textures, so it was fun alternating between them. My husband isn't a fan of ramyeon, so we skipped the noodle sari, but if you love ramyeon, definitely add it in.

I ordered two servings but it felt like four, so it ended up being a surprisingly easy and hearty meal. Budae jjigae is especially good as a takeout menu since simmering it in a pot at home means you don't have to worry about it going cold. Adding the rice cake sari on top made the ingredients even more generous, and paired with a bowl of rice, it made for a filling meal.

If you're out and about near Heyri Village or Tanhyeon-myeon in Paju and get a craving for budae jjigae, getting it packed to go and cooking it at home is a solid option.

The ingredients were generous, and even without adding ramyeon noodles, the basic glass noodles included were already a good amount.

There's a slightly nutty flavor, almost like soybean powder, and it's absolutely delicious with rice! There's zero greasiness — this is a place where you can really taste the original Uijeongbu-style budae jjigae.

Is Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae takeout worth it?

At Mom's Uijeongbu Budaejjigae, I got two servings of basic budae jjigae to go with cheese and sweet potato rice cake sari added in. The rich, distinctive broth of the stew came together with ham, sausage, and the rice cake add-ins, making it great to eat with rice.

I was especially happy with adding the cheese and sweet potato rice cake sari. If you love rice cakes, I'd suggest trying the sari add-ins. If you're looking for somewhere to eat near Heyri Village, or a Paju budae jjigae takeout option to enjoy comfortably at home, hope this helps. 😊
