Raw black pork galbi and bibim makguksu in Pyeongtaek: Okryeon Galbi
In short
Okryeon Galbi Pyeongtaek Main Branch is a Jirisan black pork galbi restaurant on Bijeon 5-ro in the Sosabeol area of Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi. A family dinner at Okryeon Galbi covered raw galbi and yuzu-marinated galbi at 250g for 20,000 won each, plus a gim-bugak (crispy seaweed) appetizer, carrot rapee, baek-kimchi and japchae side dishes, bibim makguksu (spicy cold buckwheat noodles), seafood doenjang stew and lemon sherbet. Starting with the clean-tasting raw galbi and moving on to the yuzu-scented marinated ribs was the right order.

It was a weekend when I wanted to eat good meat with my family. This time I wanted to find a meat restaurant that was a little special but still easy and delicious.
So I went to Okryeon Galbi Pyeongtaek Main Branch, where you can try Jirisan black pork raw galbi and marinated galbi.
Where is Okryeon Galbi Pyeongtaek Main Branch, and when is it open?

We ordered both the black pork raw galbi and the marinated galbi. Both were ₩20,000 for 250g, and the portions were generous. Eating the clean-tasting raw galbi first and then moving on to the yuzu galbi worked really well for me personally.

Gim-bugak appetizer and the side dishes at Okryeon Galbi
At Okryeon Galbi Pyeongtaek Main Branch, they first served us an appetizer. Meat and a delicious sauce were placed on top of gim-bugak (crispy fried seaweed) — crunchy, with a soft finish.

The side dish lineup stood out. Crunchy carrot rapée, cool baek-kimchi (white kimchi) and salty, chewy japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) all whetted the appetite.

The side dishes made for a neat spread that paired nicely with the meat. Each dish had its own distinct charm rather than tasting similar.

We also got one of Okryeon Galbi's signature sauces per person. It's a handmade sauce made with yuzu, which made it even tastier.
How does the black pork raw galbi taste?
As the thick raw galbi cooked, the savory aroma and charcoal scent rose up, building anticipation before we'd even taken a bite.

One bite in, the flavor of the meat itself was rich, true to raw galbi. Rather than being tough or dry, it had a moist, tender texture, and the more I chewed, the more the savory juices naturally spread through my mouth.

Bibim makguksu and seafood doenjang stew on the side
You can't have galbi without makguksu (buckwheat noodles). The cool, clean broth refreshed the palate. The marinated galbi paired well with the tangy makguksu, making for an easy, satisfying combination.

The bibim makguksu was spicy-sweet, with soft buckwheat noodles well coated in seasoning that stirred up the appetite.

Putting the savory raw meat and bibim makguksu together in one bite, the subtle sweetness and umami went really well together.

The hearty doenjang (soybean paste) broth had tofu, mushrooms and vegetables, which went well with rice. Shrimp stock made the seafood doenjang jjigae taste even more special.

What does the yuzu-marinated galbi taste like?
Next was the yuzu galbi I'd been looking forward to! Unlike typical pork marinated galbi with a strong sweet flavor, its aged marinade brought out the fresh, bright flavor of yuzu.

Grilled golden over charcoal, the sweet marinade aroma blended naturally with the charcoal scent. The first bite felt like familiar, tender galbi, but a subtle yuzu fragrance lingered at the end.

The combination of meat and makguksu further sharpened the appetite, making it all the more enjoyable.

Lemon sherbet to finish the meal
After the meal, we also got to try a lemon sherbet. After eating our fill of meat, the refreshing, cool sherbet cleaned up our palates nicely, making even the dessert enjoyable.

If you're in Pyeongtaek's Sosabeol area and want to enjoy a bit of special meat with family, or are looking for something different from ordinary pork galbi, I think it's worth trying both the raw galbi and yuzu-marinated galbi at Okryeon Galbi Pyeongtaek Main Branch.
