Gwangju jokbal restaurant with ₩1,000 curry sauce: Kkankkanhan

Today I'm back with a review of Kkankkanhan Jokbal, a jokbal spot in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju. My husband loves jokbal so we've been going all over trying different places, and honestly, Kkankkanhan is the one that suits my taste best. There are several branches around Gwangju, and since there's one in Yongbong too, I hurried over. Let's get into the review.

Where is Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch, and where can you park?

Kkankkanhan Jokbal in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju sits at the Jeoncheolwoo intersection. It's right on the main road at the Starbucks intersection, so it's easy to find! That said, there's no dedicated parking lot, so if you're driving, you'll need to park in a nearby alley. Fair warning — the parking difficulty is pretty high.

I was craving jokbal so badly that I went in the early evening, and luckily it wasn't too crowded. Dine-in at Kkankkanhan Jokbal Yongbong Branch starts at 4 PM, and there's group seating too, so it'd be a great spot for a work dinner or gathering.

Oh, and there's a TV, so it's perfect for coming on a baseball game day! The day I went happened to be a game day too, haha. As the start time approached, everyone started gathering around.

At Kkankkanhan Jokbal in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju, jokbal and bossam are food people order a lot for delivery too, so the delivery orders kept coming in nonstop. A popular place really is a popular place.

Ordering by tablet: à la carte instead of a set menu

You order through the tablet PC on the table. There's a set menu where you can try jokbal and side dishes together, which sounds great too! But we wanted to load up on protein, so we ordered à la carte.

Half-and-half jokbal (spicy jokbal and bossam). There's a receipt review event going on right now — write a review and you get a choice of rice ball, charcoal-grilled item, spicy tail, or mini trotter trio.

Here's the standard table setting at Kkankkanhan Jokbal in Yongbong-dong, Gwangju. It comes with salad, dried radish strips, fresh vegetables, radish wraps, various sauces, and a spicy eomuk tang (fish cake soup). That eomuk tang broth is insane. One bite in and I nearly ordered soju... And the steamed egg comes free!! Shout it out ~~~ that fluffy steamed egg is so good.

Large half-and-half jokbal: the spicy jokbal steals the show

The half-and-half jokbal (spicy jokbal and bossam) arrived. We ordered the large size and the portion was enormous. My favorite item at Kkankkanhan is the spicy jokbal — the sauce is seriously so good, ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

Adding curry sauce and white sauce for ₩1,000 each

We also ordered curry sauce and white sauce as add-ons (₩1,000), and let me just say the spicy jokbal pairs really well with the white sauce.

The tender bossam had great flavor too. Bossam was best wrapped in perilla leaves, and the spicy jokbal was seriously amazing dipped in white sauce or curry powder.

At first I was curious why the sauces cost extra, so I ordered them, and now I get why. There's a reason. The curry powder has a pretty strong aroma, so dip lightly!

Do you all prefer lean meat, or the tender cuts? I'm usually a lean-meat person, but the tender cuts here were delicious too... Chewy in a good way, if that makes sense — something about it is just different ✨

We made quick work of the bossam too — not two, but three pieces at a time. Talk about power move, honestly 🥹 This is the kind of place to bring a group and order a bunch of different things. Because... the sides are delicious too....
