Gwangju restaurant for Jeju bomal kalguksu: Gujeon Gukbap Yongbong

Today I want to introduce a Gwangju restaurant. This place looks like just another ordinary gukbap (Korean soup with rice) restaurant, but it's really not ordinary at all. Even I went in with zero expectations before my first visit, thinking gukbap is just gukbap.

But the moment I walked in, I liked it. Then the side dish spread won me over even more, haha, and the variety of the menu added another +1. It kept building like that all the way to 100% satisfied. This is a place that fully lives up to the Korean saying 'rice is strength' — genuinely the kind of meal that leaves you feeling like you can power through the whole day on it.

Why the spicy halmaep kimchi won me over at Gujeon Gukbap

I visited Gujeon Gukbap simply because I was hungry and couldn't decide where to eat, so I figured I'd just get a simple gukbap without expecting much. The reason I picked this place is that when you search '구전국밥' (Gujeon Gukbap) on Naver, it promotes this spicy kimchi — halmaep kimchi. I love spicy kimchi, so that alone was enough to bring me in. Let me get right into the review~

Parking and the entrance at Gujeon Gukbap Yongbong Main Branch

Gujeon Gukbap has a parking lot behind the building. So search for the back of the store, park there, and enter through this side door. If there's no space in the lot, there's plenty of roadside parking too.

Coming around to the front, you'll find the entrance to Gujeon Gukbap. They have everything from Gwangju-style zucchini gukbap to Jeju-style bracken gukbap to Jeolla-style sundae gukbap, so it's great for picking whatever suits your taste ^^ I ordered according to my own taste, but they say first-time visitors are usually recommended the Gwangju-style zucchini gukbap or the bracken gukbap ^^

During lunch or peak meal hours at Gujeon Gukbap Yongbong Main Branch, there can be a wait, so definitely use Table Waiting when there's a line~

Inside Gujeon Gukbap: solo seats, group tables and kids' chairs

The interior was really spacious. There were 4-person tables, 2-person tables, and solo seats, plus a space for groups. The vibe wasn't exactly an old-school neighborhood joint, but it was comfortable and easy to enjoy a meal in — the mood, temperature, humidity, all of it felt just right. I was genuinely so happy with the atmosphere of this gukbap restaurant.

They even had kids' chairs ready to go.

Tablet ordering and the review-event menu at Gujeon Gukbap

At Gujeon Gukbap Yongbong Main Branch, you can easily order from a tablet at your table. When a table has a tablet, you'd think space would be tight, and since so many side dishes come out here, the tablet is pressed flat against the wall to save room! For the review event, you get to choose 1 of 2 items, and I chose the seasonal bibimbap — I'm still thinking about it. It was so delicious. A total hidden gem ^^

Gujeon Gukbap doesn't just serve gukbap — they also sell nakmaksae (octopus and intestine dishes) and other drinking-food menus, so if you're craving soju or somaek, this could be a great pick.

I ordered the halmaep sundae assorted gukbap and the Jeju bomal kalguksu.

Gujeonchan-gan self-serve side dish bar: halmaep kimchi and green onion kimchi

As part of the basic set, they gave us glutinous rice and jar-fermented kimchi, and the second I saw the jar, my heart started pounding. My expectations for the halmaep kimchi were sky-high @_@ I opened it right away.

At Gujeon Gukbap, you can help yourself to extra side dishes and even ones that didn't come to your table, from the Gujeonchan-gan self-serve bar. With halmaep napa cabbage kimchi followed by green onion kimchi, it's basically perfect ^^

From Gujeon table → to a full Gujeon spread brought back from Gujeonchan-gan — perfect. Every single side dish was so good. Glutinous rice, seaweed, and halmaep kimchi is the ultimate combo — I want to recommend it to everyone~ The side dishes were so tasty I wanted to go back again just for them, and I felt like I could polish off a whole bowl of rice with just these. No, actually — I did want to.

Every table had sesame oil, gochujang, and pepper set out, and I wondered why — but once I ordered the bibimbap, it made total sense. Total magic-item setup.

Ahh, so good @_@ It was so delicious that day I almost ordered another glutinous rice on the spot, but I held back so I could still enjoy the main dishes properly. And since I'd already ordered the review-event bibimbap, I told myself to calm down… and held off.

Halmaep assorted sundae gukbap: spicy broth and what's inside the sundae

Halmaep sundae assorted gukbap. The sundae assorted gukbap comes in a clear white broth version too, but I love spicy everything, so I went with the spicy broth version. It looked milky but had a deep, rich flavor. It was packed with sundae (Korean blood sausage) and filling, so it was a hearty meal. The gukbap paired so well with the Gujeonchan-gan side dishes that I thought the owner must be an absolute master of pairing flavors.

How was the review-event vegetable bibimbap?

This is the vegetable bibimbap I got through the review event. This thing is a real treasure. Even if this review-event item disappears next time, I'd want to order it again as a side. It's a simple bibimbap, but it nails the basics perfectly. When you drizzle on the bibim sauce and sesame oil from the table, you'll find yourself thinking, 'wait, what is this?? How can something that looks this simple taste this good??' — and before you know it, you'll be scooping up bite after bite ^^

Jeju-style bomal kalguksu, a rare find in Gwangju

Jeju-style bomal kalguksu (top shell noodle soup). Since it's called Gujeon Gukbap, I figured I should have gukbap, but then I saw the Jeju-style bomal kalguksu on the menu — this is a dish that's hard to find anywhere outside Jeju, let alone in Gwangju, so I ordered it hoping for a taste of Jeju. Is there anything this place can't do well? It genuinely tasted just like the bomal kalguksu I've had in Jeju. The subtle briny sea flavor and the noodles simmered down soft and tender were so delicious. I think even kids would love this, so I really recommend giving this menu a try. 2_2

What to order at this 24-hour Yongbong-dong restaurant

The combo I ordered today at Gujeon Gukbap Yongbong Main Branch — the Jeju bomal kalguksu and the halmaep sundae assorted gukbap — try ordering one of each. The halmaep gukbap, practically the signature dish here, paired with the bomal kalguksu that perfectly recreates the taste of Jeju — it was so similar to what I had in Jeju and so delicious that I even dunked my rice bowl straight into the broth.
