Korean restaurant with private hanok room in Gyeongju: Hyoeunok

In short

Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch is a beef rib restaurant near Bomun Lake in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, set in a tile-roofed hanok building with mother-of-pearl interior décor and private room seating. A family of three sat in the inner room and ordered the Ppyeoberest Original 5-item set, working through beef rib hot pot, beef shabu-shabu, knife-cut noodles, and gondre porridge, with ribs so tender the bone slid off with just a pair of tongs. It's a strong pick if you're bringing parents along or hosting a family gathering while in Gyeongju.

The exterior instantly caught my eye with its elegant tile-roofed hanok (traditional Korean house) design. The building was so clean and upscale that it felt perfect for bringing your parents along or hosting a family gathering! 👍

What's in the Ppyeoberest Original 5-Item Set (for 2–4 people)

Table spread of the Ppyeoberest Original 5-Item Set

Hyoeunok's signature dish, the 'Ppyeoberest Original 5-Item Set,' arrived! It's an insanely generous course that goes from beef rib hot pot, to shabu-shabu beef, vegetables/minari/mushrooms, knife-cut noodles, all the way to gondre porridge! 😋

Tall pile of beef ribs in Hyoeunok's hot pot

Beef rib hot pot

True to its name, the beef ribs are piled up like Mount Everest — the visual alone made me gasp!

The slow-braised beef ribs were so tender that the bone slid right off the meat with just a touch of the tongs. Dipping it into the sweet and savory special sauce, the juices burst out and it melted in my mouth. 😍

The bean sprouts and minari (water dropwort) packed into the hot pot added a fragrant note that elevated the meat's flavor even more!

Beef shabu-shabu

After enjoying all the ribs, we moved on to beef shabu-shabu cooked in the rich broth. It was tender and truly full-flavored!!

Kalguksu (knife-cut noodles)

Next up: the chewy kalguksu noodles get dropped in! Soaked in the flavorful broth and eaten alongside kimchi, I couldn't stop eating them.

Gondre porridge as the final course

The meal wrapped up with a carefully simmered, thick gondre (dried aster) porridge! The gondre aroma blended with the rich broth to warm us up as we finished the meal.
