Family-friendly not-spicy Ppyeoberest at Hyoeunok in Gyeongju
In short
Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch is a beef bone and beef rib hot pot restaurant in the Bomun Tourist Complex food street in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. On a Saturday afternoon we walked straight in with a Naver reservation and ordered the signature Ppyeoberest not spicy, working through a course of hot pot, knife-cut noodles, and gondre porridge. Our family of three, including our kid, left completely full with a dish you can really only find in Gyeongju.

On the last day of our Gyeongju trip, we were trying to decide what to eat for our final meal, and this time we picked something you can really only get in Gyeongju — Hyoeunok's signature dish, Ppyeoberest!
It's located in the Bomun Tourist Complex food street, so it was easy to find, and it wasn't far from our last stay at Lahan Select Gyeongju, which made it a good pick for our last meal of the trip. And most of all, the food was seriously so good ㅠㅠ even now writing this post I'm craving it enough to want to go back to Gyeongju just to eat it again haha.
Saturday afternoon, every seat except reservations was taken

We visited around noon on a Saturday, and there were way more people than I expected.

There were almost no open seats besides reserved ones, but luckily we'd booked ahead through Naver, so we got seated right away with no wait. If you can't book on Naver, you can also enter your number on-site and wait.

Once inside, what struck me was how wide the age range of customers was, from babies to elderly guests. Even though it's a tourist-heavy area, it was clear this is genuinely a local favorite, with plenty of Gyeongju locals eating there too.
Ppyeoberest price and choosing your spice level

This is exactly why we came to Hyoeunok — for the Ppyeoberest. It costs ₩65,900. Ppyeoberest is Hyoeunok's signature, most popular dish, made with premium beef ribs and beef bones simmered for a long time.
You can also choose your spice level, and since we were eating with our kid, we went with not spicy. Not long after ordering, the food arrived, and…

The portion was way bigger than expected and the presentation was overwhelming! At first I genuinely wondered how we'd finish it all haha. It's seriously so generous haha.
The meat comes already simmered down, so you just heat it once and eat right away — and it was so tender.

Just a light touch with the tongs and the meat fell right off the bone!
A different appeal from gamjatang
Honestly, when I first saw the visual, I expected something similar to gamjatang (pork bone soup). But once I actually tried it, it was clearly different.

Since the broth is made from long-simmered beef bones, it had a rich, deep flavor, and eating the tender beef with the minari (water dropwort) simmered in it was quite an appealing combination.

I was curious about the spicy version too, so I ordered the spicy sauce separately and dipped the meat in it haha. The sauce wasn't too spicy, so it was just right for dipping the meat!
It wasn't over after the bones — hot pot and knife-cut noodles
But the real fun of Ppyeoberest started here.

Once you've eaten all the meat off the bones, you can make hot pot. Adding hot pot meat into the rich broth was another treat!

After the hot pot, it was time for knife-cut noodles. I was already so full, but they were so good I kept slurping them down haha lol.

There's a self-serve bar with broth and side dishes ready, so if the broth runs low you can just grab more yourself — really convenient. Meat → hot pot → noodles, and I was getting fuller and fuller... but there was still one more course left haha.
Finishing cleanly with gondre porridge

Once you finish the noodles, you can use the last of the broth to make gondre (dried aster greens) porridge.

Since the broth had already been fully infused from the beef bones through the hot pot, the porridge at the very end really brought out the deep flavor. I thought the portion looked big at first, and it really was... lol. But it was so good it just kept going down 🤣

With the course running Ppyeoberest → hot pot → knife-cut noodles → gondre porridge, the three of us in my family ate until we were completely stuffed haha.
A satisfying last meal of our Gyeongju trip

When you go hunting for good food around Gyeongju, there's plenty of delicious food out there, but a dish you can only get in Gyeongju is something special. Hyoeunok's Ppyeoberest fits that bill — it's worth experiencing at least once on a Gyeongju trip.
Especially if you're visiting with a kid like we did, being able to choose the spice level and enjoy multiple courses from one order makes it a solid pick for a family meal!

What really stood out when we visited was seeing such a wide range of customers — locals, kids, and elderly guests alike — which made me think, "ah, this really is a genuine local favorite in Gyeongju's Bomun Tourist Complex." If you're looking for something a bit different to eat in Gyeongju, I'd recommend Hyoeunok's Ppyeoberest.
