Hi, this is Tam. While traveling in Jeonju, I wanted to find a proper Korean meal my mom would love, so I went looking and ended up here. When you think of Jeonju, bibimbap or hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) usually come to mind first, but personally I think ganjang gejang (soy sauce marinated crab) — the ultimate rice thief — is a must-try on any trip. So here's my review of the ridiculously delicious Hanjamae Ganjang Gejang Jeonju Hanok Village Main Branch, let's go :)

Where is Hanjamae Ganjang Gejang, and where do you park?

Hanjamae Ganjang Gejang Jeonju Hanok Village Main Branch is located at 23 Gyeonggijeon-gil in Jeonju, and it's also famous as a Jeonju Hanok Village restaurant. We parked at the hanok village parking lot and walked over.

Since it's near Jeonju Hanok Village, it was also great to stop by for a meal while sightseeing around the village.

A clean and pleasant interior. The tables were spaced well apart, and each table had a tablet so we could order directly, which was convenient.

Check the country-of-origin labeling too :) They also had Chuseok gift sets — apparently Hanjamae Ganjang Gejang sells a lot of soy crab and soy shrimp as takeout packages too.

They even had a whole pack of disposable plastic gloves, which put my mind at ease haha. Usually at soy crab places they give you just one glove, and it's awkward to ask for more, but here there was a whole pack, which was so nice.

We ordered the signature mixed soy set (28,000 won) x 2 servings, and the hamburg steak set (15,000 won).

Whoa, what a visual! Walking around the hanok village, you tend to eat a lot of snacks and street food. But when you crave a proper meal, this is exactly the kind of Jeonju Korean restaurant to visit!

Hanjamae Ganjang Gejang especially has a wide variety of dishes, so I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to enjoy several kinds of soy-marinated seafood rather than just soy crab alone!

The mixed soy set was incredible. Soy crab, soy abalone, soy shrimp, and soy salmon, along with egg rice, soup, and side dishes — a truly well put together meal!

Four soy-marinated seafoods in one meal

Being able to try several kinds of soy-marinated seafood at once is what makes this such a great Jeonju soy crab restaurant ;) Beyond just soy crab, there's a range of seafood so you can pick according to your taste. With this combo... it's just love :)

The soy crab was delicious, but the soy salmon and soy shrimp and soy abalone too... wow, isn't this composition just amazing??

How does the soy crab taste — is it salty?

The soy crab at Hanjamae Ganjang Gejang had a savory, umami-rich sauce that was so tasty. I was worried soy crab might be too salty, but it turned out to be way less salty than expected, which I loved. The downside is that I ended up eating way too much. Not great for the diet, haha.

The crabs weren't huge but the meat was substantial with a high meat yield. Paired with warm rice, it was a perfect match.

And putting rice into the crab shell and mixing it with the meat and roe is an essential part of the ganjang gejang experience!!!! The crab meat was soaked in soy sauce, with a great balance of saltiness and umami — I ate it so happily. This is exactly why they call soy crab a rice thief!!!! That's the flavor.

Topping the crab-shell rice with soy salmon made me realize, this is real happiness haha. Especially since my picky mom doesn't usually eat much rice.. but she finished a whole bowl ^^ haha.

Shrimp

The soy sauce wasn't just intensely salty — it had a subtle umami that really came through, so it was delicious even on its own, and I kept reaching for more at this great Jeonju Korean restaurant :)

And for our little one, a hamburg steak set for 15,000 won :) It came with egg rice, which makes this a great spot to visit with kids in Jeonju. It was delicious and generously portioned, so we all shared it happily.

The seasoned soy shrimp given as part of the review event service! Such a nice touch to give seasoned shrimp when you order soy crab.. we were so satisfied.

A clean, easy Korean meal in Jeonju

What I realized traveling in Jeonju is that you can't skip proper Jeonju Korean food! Bold, spicy dishes are great, but if you love a meal with rice, side dishes, soup, and a main all served together, I highly recommend Hanjamae Ganjang Gejang :) Sightseeing around the hanok village afterward is a bonus....♡ Especially if you love soy crab, being able to enjoy it alongside Korean side dishes and rice made for a satisfying meal during our trip.
