Guwol-dong restaurant for treating parents: Wando live abalone

In short

Jeonbokchon is a Wando live-abalone Korean set-menu (hanjeongsik) restaurant in Guwol-dong, Incheon, between Yesulhoegwan Station and Incheon City Hall Station. Ordering the abalone set menu for two brought a full course: abalone porridge, raw abalone, abalone steamed in innard sauce, abalone sushi, seafood scorched-rice soup, beef bulgogi, and perilla abalone seaweed soup. With private rooms, high-partitioned hall seating, and a dedicated lot behind the building, Jeonbokchon suits a meal out with parents especially well.

It had been a while since I'd treated my seafood-loving mother to a hearty meal, so we headed out to Namdong, Incheon. I found a place that uses live abalone shipped straight from Wando, so freshness was a given, and the price was very reasonable for the size of the course — real value for money. Here's my honest review of Jeonbokchon (전복촌), a true Incheon hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) gem where you can enjoy a whole parade of abalone dishes in a private setting ^^

What Jeonbokchon looks like inside: private rooms and partitioned hall seating

Jeonbokchon sits between Yesulhoegwan Station and Incheon City Hall Station, so it's very easy to reach by public transit. Walking in, I was struck by the calm, upscale interior that felt almost like a Japanese restaurant.

The space is split into a room section and a hall section, with individual banquet rooms that seat anywhere from 4 to 20 people — perfect for family gatherings or a sangyeonrye (formal meeting of the two families before a wedding) ^^

The hall section is also separated by high partitions, so even without a private room the whole place feels quiet and private. If you're after a quiet Namdong, Incheon restaurant where you can actually talk over the meal, this is it.

What comes in the abalone set menu for two: porridge, raw abalone, innard-sauce steamed abalone

Once seated, we ordered Jeonbokchon's best-selling menu, the 'abalone course for two.' First came a savory, smooth abalone porridge and a salad to gently wake up the stomach. Then the table filled up with a colorful array of abalone dishes ^^

Raw abalone served with chojang sauce and wasabi soy sauce

The raw abalone I'd been most looking forward to was, true to its Wando live-abalone origins, completely free of any fishy smell, with a perfectly crisp, chewy bite. A light dip in chojang (vinegar-chili sauce) or wasabi soy sauce brought out the ocean flavor beautifully.

And the highlight of the course — the abalone braised with innard sauce — pairs tender-yet-chewy abalone with a rich, sweetish innard sauce for dipping. It was the perfect dish for showing off everything great about abalone ^^

Abalone sushi made with blanched abalone over tangy vinegared rice, plus a refreshing salad using the abalone innards — every single dish landed. This really was the essence of a proper Incheon hanjeongsik.

The middle courses: sweet-and-sour codari, seafood scorched-rice soup, beef bulgogi

Once we'd had our fill of abalone, the palate-cleansing dishes started arriving. The spicy, chewy pollock salad wrapped in crisp napa cabbage was delicious, the crab-stick mayo gimbap (seaweed rice roll) was savory, and the codfish sweet and sour was a textbook example of crispy-outside, tender-inside — a really satisfying lineup ^^ (Tip: if you join the review event, they'll also throw in freshly fried shrimp tempura as a service item — be sure to ask!)

After all the cold seafood dishes, the hot stone-pot seafood scorched-rice soup was exactly what we needed to warm back up. The thick, deep broth was loaded with scorched rice and seafood — very filling.

Then came tender bulgogi soaked in a sweet soy marinade, meaning we got to enjoy both seafood and meat in one course — this is an Incheon City Hall-area restaurant that anyone, any age, will love.

How the meal ends: perilla abalone seaweed soup and plum tea

We were already stuffed, but you can't skip the final course. A seaweed soup loaded with savory perilla powder and abalone arrives along with neat side dishes and rice. The nutty perilla flavor combined with the deep abalone broth made this an addictive soup — I kept reaching for my spoon even though I was full ^^

After finishing the meal, we were served a cool, digestive plum tea for dessert, which cleaned up the palate nicely. My seafood-loving mom was thoroughly happy with the whole spread and the flavors, and we already promised to come back together as a whole family for the upcoming holiday. This was one of the best meals in Namdong, Incheon for the price!

Where to park at Jeonbokchon in Guwol-dong

Jeonbokchon is located about 100m from the entrance of the Homeplus Guwol-dong parking lot. If you're driving, turn into the alley by the gomtang (bone-broth soup) restaurant (Dongnamjip) right in front of the store — there's a spacious dedicated ground-level lot behind the building! If that lot fills up, there's also an open-air lot in front of the shop, so you don't need to worry about parking at all ^^

Is Jeonbokchon worth it, and who should go
