Comparing two rice soups on a cold day at a Hanam Misa restaurant

In short

O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang (오형제황제누룽지탕) Hanam Misa Main Branch is a newly opened seafood nurungjitang (scorched rice soup) restaurant in Hanam, Gyeonggi, a 5-minute drive from Starfield Hanam. Tasted side by side, the mungbean abalone nurungjitang at 22,000 won was the nuttier, richer bowl, while the seafood nurungjitang at 18,000 won tasted cleaner and lighter. On a day with a cold coming on, O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang warmed me right through, and it is a place worth returning to with parents.

Seafood nurungjitang at O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang near Starfield Hanam

I went to the newly opened O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang near Starfield Hanam!! I fell hard for seafood nurungjitang (scorched rice soup) at a place in Pangyo a while back, and now Hanam finally has a proper seafood nurungjitang spot too.

Spacious interior of O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang Hanam Misa

A spacious dining room for family and group gatherings

I was surprised by the sheer size of the place when I walked in — the interior of this Hanam Hwangje Nurungjitang spot is genuinely huge.

Partitioned window seats and large tables inside the restaurant

The restaurant runs long on both sides, and even with generous spacing between tables, there are still tons of them!! The window seats are divided by partitions, so they're good for conversation, and the middle section has big tables that would work well for large group gatherings too.

What nurungjitang dishes are on the menu?

The nurungjitang is seafood-based, with variations including abalone, mungbean abalone, maesaengi (fine seaweed), and jeon-gabok. There are also a few Chinese-style dishes that pair well with the scorched rice.

Self-serve bar set up in the middle of the restaurant

Self-serve side dishes and green onion kimchi

The self-serve bar is set up neatly in the middle of the restaurant. There were only about 8 kinds, not a huge number, but every single side dish had that savory umami that gets your appetite going!!

They bring the basic side dishes out to you at first, but the orange for dessert is only at the self-serve bar, so grab some after your meal. The green onion kimchi here is seriously the real deal!! I heard they also sell their kimchi packaged to take home separately.

This time we ordered the mungbean abalone nurungjitang at 22,000 won and the seafood nurungjitang at 18,000 won.

They bring the food out and pour the broth into the pot right in front of you, and that dramatic bubbling-up sound really gets your appetite going.

Seafood nurungjitang loaded with seafood

How the seafood nurungjitang tastes

Living up to its name, the seafood nurungjitang is genuinely loaded with seafood. The scorched rice mixed in with the seafood is nutty, and the rich seafood flavor isn't overpowering at all — it doesn't get heavy no matter how much you eat, so your stomach feels comfortable the more you go.

Broth full of seafood and vegetables

Both the seafood and the vegetables are generously piled in. I had a bit of a cold coming on that day, and eating the seafood nurungjitang warmed me right through — it really felt like proper nourishment.

As the scorched rice soaks up the broth it gets appropriately soft without turning mushy!!

Fresh seafood including chewy whelk

The seafood was genuinely fresh too — the shrimp were plump and springy, the whelk was chewy, nothing was lacking.

Mungbean abalone or seafood: which bowl to order?

The mungbean seafood nurungjitang is the seafood version with mungbean and a small abalone added in. With the mungbean in there, it was even nuttier! If you like nutty flavors, I'd recommend the mungbean version; if you prefer something cleaner, go for the seafood version.

Earthenware pot of nurungjitang staying hot to the last bite

Because it comes in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot), it stays piping hot until the very last bite, and the scorched rice and seafood are both so soft and tender that it's a flavor everyone from babies to grandparents would like. I felt my stomach warming up comfortably with every bite, and it made me think of my parents.

Nurungjitang enjoyed as a full meal

If you want a proper meal that warms you all the way through, how about O Hyeongje Hwangje Nurungjitang? The weather's getting cooler these days, and I think you'll be satisfied if you check it out!!
